According to LendingTree’s 2025 study, Michigan had the fewest driving incidents among the states analyzed, at 20.9 incidents per 1,000 drivers. That result reflects auto-insurance inquiry data from January 1 through September 30, 2025—not a full-year census of drivers or a definitive ranking of crash deaths, severity, or every aspect of road safety.
What LendingTree’s 2025 ranking says about Michigan
LendingTree’s Best and Worst Drivers by State: 2025 Report, updated December 1, 2025, ranked Michigan first for the lowest overall driving-incident rate in its comparison: 20.9 incidents per 1,000 drivers. Florida followed at 23.1, and Colorado was third at 23.7.
The ranking is best read as a result within LendingTree’s dataset: Michigan had the lowest combined incident rate among the jurisdictions compared. It does not establish that Michigan is the safest state under every measure, or that its drivers have the lowest risk of a fatal or severe crash.
How the study calculated incidents
LendingTree analyzed residence information in tens of millions of QuoteWizard by LendingTree auto-insurance inquiries submitted from January 1 through September 30, 2025. It calculated incidents per 1,000 drivers using the drivers represented in those inquiries. The period covers nine months, not the entire 2025 calendar year.

The combined incident measure included accidents, DUIs, speeding-related incidents, and general citations. The latter category included records such as careless or reckless conduct, improper lane use or passing, failure to yield, safety violations, following too closely, failing to signal, and hit-and-runs involving a bicycle or pedestrian. One driver can have more than one incident, so the individual category rates do not add up to the combined rate.
Because the figures come from insurance inquiries, they should not be treated as a direct count of every driver or every crash in a state. The study describes its inquiry-based comparison; it does not establish that the inquiries represent all drivers in each state.
Michigan’s rates across the study’s incident categories
| Measure | Michigan result | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| All included incidents | 20.9 per 1,000 drivers | Lowest overall rate in LendingTree’s state comparison |
| Accidents | 10.0 per 1,000 drivers | Lowest accident rate in the report’s state comparison |
| DUIs | 1.6 per 1,000 drivers | Not the lowest DUI rate |
| Speeding-related incidents | 1.9 per 1,000 drivers | Ranked 40th lowest, or 40th best for a low rate, in a 51-jurisdiction listing that included the District of Columbia |
All rates in the table are from LendingTree’s analysis of inquiry data for January 1 through September 30, 2025. A first-place overall result does not mean Michigan ranked first in every category: its speeding-related rate, for example, was much closer to the higher end of the listing than its accident rate.

What Michigan’s official 2025 crash data adds
Michigan State Police’s final statewide crash data, released August 6, 2026, offers a different view because it counts reported crashes and fatalities rather than insurance inquiries. The state recorded 1,065 roadway fatalities in 2025, down 3% from 1,099 in 2024, while total crashes rose 0.5% to 290,221 from 288,880.

The statewide figures were mixed across road users and crash types. Pedestrian-involved deaths rose 18% to 184, bicyclist-involved deaths increased 21% to 35, and commercial motor vehicle-involved deaths rose 16% to 128. Alcohol-involved fatalities fell 14% to 264, work-zone fatalities fell 14% to 24, and motorcyclist fatalities fell 10% to 151. These numbers come from the state’s final 2025 crash-data release and should not be combined with LendingTree’s inquiry-based incident rates as if they were one dataset.

State rankings can produce different results when they answer different questions. CarInsurance.com’s 2025 analysis of the best and worst states for driving placed Michigan 22nd. Its score combined safety measures with affordability and infrastructure factors, including fatalities per population and vehicle miles traveled, uninsured motorists, road conditions, insurance premiums, gasoline and repair costs, vehicle ownership costs, and commute time.

Eight infrared lights ensure optimal visibility, and WDR adjusts exposure to capture detailed images in varying lighting.
- Optional GPS for Real-Time Vehicle Tracking: Purchase the GPS logger (sold separately) to add location, speed, and time tracking, providing a visual representation of your vehicle's route. This feature is perfect for documenting travel details in case of incidents.

That ranking does not directly contradict LendingTree’s: the two analyses use different inputs, denominators, and goals. When comparing state lists, check what they count, whether the denominator is drivers, residents, or miles traveled, the period covered, how severity and overlapping categories are handled, and whether costs or infrastructure affect the score.
What the ranking does—and does not—show
LendingTree’s result supports a precise conclusion: Michigan had the lowest overall incident rate in that company’s analysis of auto-insurance inquiries during the first nine months of 2025. It does not identify why the state ranked first, prove that any particular factor caused the result, or show that Michigan leads on fatalities, road design, or all dimensions of road safety.
