Motorcycle MOT checklist: what to check before the test

A practical motorcycle MOT walk-around based on the DVSA manual: check the plate, brakes, controls, tyres, lights, horn, exhaust, frame and sidecar, while understanding which results require the tester’s equipment.

Use a careful walk-around to find obvious faults before a motorcycle MOT, but do not treat it as a pass guarantee. The tester follows the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) inspection manual, checks the motorcycle without dismantling it, and carries out formal tests such as brake efficiency and headlamp aim that cannot be confirmed accurately in a driveway inspection.

This checklist is based on the DVSA requirements for motorcycles, scooters, mopeds and motorcycle combinations in classes 1 and 2. The manual applies in England, Scotland and Wales and provides guidance for Northern Ireland. It was updated on 1 April 2026, and the exact result can depend on the motorcycle’s first-use date, equipment and configuration.

What the motorcycle MOT covers

The inspection is broader than a check of lights and tyres. The official checklist covers identification, brakes, controls, steering, suspension, wheels, tyres, lamps, electrical equipment, the horn, exhaust and fuel system, the frame, seat, attachments, headlamp aim, brake performance and sidecar components where fitted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A walk-around is useful for spotting damage, looseness, leaks, missing equipment or an inoperative lamp. It does not reproduce the tester’s measurements or every defect decision. Do not dismantle components or attempt a repair beyond your competence simply to prepare for the test.

Quick pre-test walk-around

Work through the motorcycle in good light, preferably when it is clean enough to see the components. Record anything uncertain and have a qualified motorcycle professional investigate it rather than guessing that it will be acceptable.

Area What you can check safely What the formal inspection adds
Number plate and identification Rear plate present where required, securely fixed, visible and legible; no obstruction or severe damage. Detailed plate rules and exceptions in the DVSA manual.
Brakes Front and rear controls operate and return normally; look for visible leaks or damage. Component condition, operation and a brake-efficiency test, including signs such as binding, grabbing or judder.
Steering and controls Handlebars and controls appear secure; throttle and clutch move as expected. Inspection of handlebars, brake controls, switches, throttle, clutch lever, steering and head bearings.
Suspension, wheels and tyres Look for visible tyre or wheel damage and an obviously insecure suspension component. Checks of suspension, wheels, bearings and tyres, including bearing play and roughness where the tester can examine raised wheels.
Lights and electrics Operate headlamp, position lamps, stop lamp, indicators, relevant number-plate lamp, rear reflector and indicator warning where fitted. Requirements are applied according to the motorcycle’s age and configuration.
Horn Press the control and confirm the audible warning works. Assessment against the inspection requirement.
Exhaust and fuel system Look for obvious leaks, looseness or damage. A major exhaust leak, insecure exhaust or silencer marked “NOT FOR ROAD USE” (or similar) is treated as a major defect.
Frame, seat and attachments Inspect accessible structural areas for obvious damage, insecure attachments or corrosion; check seat and footrests are secure. The tester assesses accessible areas under the no-dismantling procedure.
Headlamp aim and brake performance Check that the lamp operates and brakes feel normal; do not try to certify measurements at home. Headlamp aim is checked with the rider on the machine and brake efficiency is tested formally.
Sidecar (if fitted) Look for obvious damage or looseness at the sidecar, its wheel, tyre and attachments. Sidecar tyres, wheels, bearings, brake and suspension where fitted, attachment structure, swivel joints on a leanable sidecar and alignment are included.

Number plate and identification

Start at the rear of the motorcycle. The number plate must be present where the rules require one, securely attached, visible and legible. Check that a fixing, accessory, luggage item or plate surround does not obscure characters. Look for cracks, heavy damage, dirt or other conditions that make the registration mark difficult to read.

These are practical warning signs, not a substitute for the detailed legal criteria. The DVSA manual contains exceptions and specific plate requirements, so do not assume that one plate rule applies identically to every motorcycle or moped.

Brakes: condition is different from efficiency

Controls and visible components

Operate the front and rear brake controls while the motorcycle is stationary. Each should move normally and return without sticking. Inspect visible hoses, pipes, calipers, drums and reservoirs for obvious damage or fluid leakage. A low or abnormal control, wet component or damaged part warrants professional attention before riding to the test station.

Why a driveway check cannot prove a pass

The MOT covers brake condition and operation as well as component security and performance. The official checklist also includes a brake-efficiency test. A static squeeze or a short ride cannot measure the result or reliably identify binding, grabbing or judder under the tester’s procedure. Do not describe a brake as MOT-safe solely because the lever feels firm.

Steering, handlebars and rider controls

Look for obvious looseness, cracks or damage around the handlebars, clamps and steering head. Turn the bars smoothly through their normal range, with the engine off, and make sure cables and wiring are not pulled tight or trapped. The throttle should move as expected and return normally; the clutch lever and both brake controls should be secure and usable. Check switches, including those needed for the lamps and horn, for normal operation.

The tester’s checklist includes handlebars, brake controls, switches, throttle, clutch lever, steering and head bearings. Bearing wear can be difficult to diagnose without lifting the wheel and applying the inspection method, so refer uncertain movement, notchiness or play to a competent mechanic.

Suspension, wheels, bearings and tyres

Tyres

Inspect both tyres around the tread and sidewalls. Look for cuts, bulges, exposed structure, embedded damage or anything that appears insecure. Confirm that each tyre is seated correctly on its wheel and that no valve or related component is visibly damaged. Use the motorcycle manufacturer’s specification for pressure and load; there is no universal pressure that can be prescribed for every motorcycle.

A suitable pressure gauge can help you compare the cold tyres with the maker’s specification before travelling to the station. Correct pressure does not, by itself, establish that the tyre meets every MOT requirement.

Wheels, bearings and suspension

Check rims, spokes where fitted, axle areas and suspension components for obvious damage, looseness or leakage. Push the suspension through its normal travel only if you can do so safely and without placing yourself in danger. The DVSA procedure can involve raised wheels to check bearing play and roughness; that is a formal inspection technique, not a complete home diagnosis. Stop and seek professional help if you notice wobble, grinding, excessive play or a leaking damper.

Lights, reflectors and electrical equipment

With the motorcycle safely supported, switch on and operate the headlamp, position lamps, stop lamp, indicators and any rear number-plate lamp fitted or required. Check the rear reflector and the indicator warning device where fitted. Walk behind and in front of the motorcycle to confirm that lenses are present, clean enough to emit light and not obviously cracked or insecure. Verify that the brake lamp responds to each brake control if the motorcycle is designed to do so.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume every motorcycle must have the same lamp arrangement. The manual contains age-related dates, equipment exceptions and configuration-specific requirements. A missing lamp may be relevant on one machine but not another, while an incorrectly fitted or insecure lamp can still create a defect. For a modified or unusual motorcycle, use the current manual section that matches its first-use date and equipment.

Horn

Press the horn control briefly and confirm that it produces an audible warning. Check the switch and wiring for obvious damage. If the horn is weak, intermittent or silent, investigate the fuse, connection or unit before the test, but do not open electrical components unless you are qualified to do so.

Exhaust and fuel system

Inspect the exhaust from the cylinder head to the silencer for visible looseness, holes, damaged mounts or leaks. Look for fuel-system leaks, damaged lines and insecure components without touching hot parts. A major exhaust leak or an insecure exhaust is a major defect under the DVSA criteria. A silencer marked “NOT FOR ROAD USE” or similar is also treated as a major defect.

Do not rely on a louder-than-usual sound as the only warning. Small leaks can be difficult to see, and a secure-looking mount may still fail when the system is hot or vibrating. Have suspected leaks or damaged mounting points checked by a professional.

Frame, seat, footrests and attachments

Inspect accessible frame tubes, welds, mounting points and visible structural areas for obvious cracks, distortion, insecure fasteners or serious corrosion. Check that the seat is securely attached and that the footrests and other rider attachments do not move unexpectedly. Look around luggage racks, crash protection, fairing brackets and other additions for anything loose that could affect the structure or obscure a required component.

The tester works within the no-dismantling rule and can only assess areas that are accessible under the inspection procedure. Removing bodywork at home does not turn your inspection into an official test, and refitting a panel badly can introduce a new security problem.

Headlamp aim and the formal brake test

The checklist includes headlamp aim with the rider on the motorcycle. A lamp can work and still point too high, too low or incorrectly across the road. Parked-wall checks are useful for spotting an obviously misdirected beam, but they do not replace the tester’s equipment and method. If the motorcycle has adjustable suspension, luggage or a recent headlamp change, have the aim checked by someone equipped to set it correctly.

The brake test assesses efficiency and can reveal binding, grabbing or judder. Do not attempt to recreate a test run on a public road, and do not infer the result from a single gentle stop. Any abnormal braking noise, pull, vibration or delayed release is a reason to arrange a professional inspection before the MOT.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sidecars and motorcycle combinations

If a sidecar is fitted, include it in the walk-around rather than checking only the motorcycle. Inspect the sidecar tyre and wheel, look for bearing play or damage, and check attachment points and structure for looseness or corrosion. Where fitted, examine the sidecar brake and suspension. A leanable sidecar has swivel joints that are included in the official checklist, and alignment is also assessed.

Because sidecar layouts vary, the relevant manual provisions depend on the particular combination. Do not remove a sidecar or alter its attachment solely to simplify the test without first confirming the legal and engineering consequences with a qualified professional.

Age, equipment and regional qualifications

Motorcycle MOT requirements are not a single checklist that applies identically to every machine. First-use date, lamps originally fitted, later modifications and the presence of a sidecar can change what the tester must assess. The DVSA manual updated on 1 April 2026 is the authority for detailed defect categories and exceptions.

The cited manual covers England, Scotland and Wales and provides guidance for Northern Ireland. If the motorcycle is registered, tested or modified under a different regional arrangement, verify the applicable rules before relying on this walk-around. When a question concerns a specific age, imported model, historic equipment arrangement or modification, consult the matching manual section or a qualified motorcycle MOT tester.

What to do when you find a problem

  1. Stop and classify the risk. Do not ride if you see a brake-fluid leak, unsafe tyre damage, loose steering, a seriously insecure wheel, fuel leakage or another condition that could make the motorcycle unsafe.
  2. Separate obvious defects from uncertainty. A failed lamp or visibly loose plate is straightforward to report; bearing play, structural corrosion, brake efficiency and headlamp aim need competent assessment.
  3. Use the manufacturer’s information for setup values. This is especially important for tyre pressure and load. Never substitute a generic pressure or adjustment.
  4. Have repairs checked after work. Re-test every affected control, lamp, fastener and attachment safely, and ensure no panel, cable or hose has been trapped during reassembly.
  5. Ask the MOT station about unusual configurations. Tell them about a sidecar, major modification or equipment that may be age-specific when booking, so the correct inspection expectations are clear.

On the day of the test

Arrive with the motorcycle in a condition that lets the tester see the required components. Make sure the controls and switches can be operated, the number plate is readable and the machine is not carrying loose items that obstruct inspection. If the motorcycle has just been repaired, allow any heat-sensitive parts to cool as appropriate and mention relevant work to the tester.

Remember that the MOT is a statutory inspection, not a general service. A pass records the condition against the inspection criteria at that time; it does not guarantee future reliability or eliminate the need for routine maintenance. Conversely, a careful pre-test check can prevent an avoidable failure by identifying an obvious lamp, plate, attachment, leak or control problem before the appointment.
