Its parts and electrical layout vary by model and year, but most systems use a power source, a timing trigger, an ignition module, a coil, and a plug.
How a motorcycle ignition system works
As the engine rotates, a trigger or pulse generator signals when a spark is due. The ignition module uses that timing signal to switch electrical energy through the ignition coil. The coil raises the voltage on its secondary side, sending it through the high-voltage lead to the spark plug, where it crosses the plug gap.
The power source and switching method depend on the motorcycle. For example, Honda’s Common Service Manual describes an exciter-powered CDI arrangement: an alternator exciter coil supplies AC, a diode rectifies it to charge a capacitor, and a pulse-generator signal triggers an SCR. The SCR allows the capacitor to discharge through the ignition coil primary; the resulting high-voltage surge at the secondary crosses the spark-plug gap. Other designs draw ignition energy from the battery and use a voltage-raising circuit, so an exciter coil is not present in every system.
What the main components do
- Power source: A battery or a charging/exciter source supplies energy, depending on the design.
- Trigger or pulse generator: Sends the timing signal as the engine rotates.
- Ignition module: Controls the switching event. It may be a CDI, a TCI/igniter, or part of an integrated electronic control unit.
- Ignition coil: Converts the switched primary-side energy into high voltage at the secondary.
- High-voltage lead and spark plug: Carry the high voltage and apply it across the plug gap.
- Stop/ignition switch and wiring: Connect, enable, or interrupt the circuit; their arrangement varies by motorcycle.
These are functional examples, not a universal parts layout. Honda’s service diagram and Harley-Davidson’s parts references show components for particular designs and motorcycle families.

CDI and TCI: the difference
CDI means capacitor-discharge ignition. It stores electrical energy in a capacitor, then releases it through the ignition coil primary when the module receives a trigger. Honda’s example uses an alternator exciter coil and an SCR; other CDI systems may use a battery-powered voltage-raising circuit.
TCI, or transistor-controlled ignition, stores energy differently. In Shindengen’s explanation, a transistor allows current to flow through the ignition coil primary; when the transistor switches off, the rapid change in current induces high voltage in the secondary. The ignition unit controls when the switch occurs.

Both are electronic ignition approaches. Their different energy-storage and switching methods do not, by themselves, establish which system is better for a particular motorcycle.

A no-start or misfire can involve the ignition system, but the symptom alone does not identify a failed CDI, coil, plug, or other part. Use the manufacturer’s service procedure for the motorcycle’s exact year and model rather than replacing a component by guesswork.

- Identify the motorcycle precisely. Confirm make, model, and year before looking up specifications or parts.
- Consult the owner’s or service manual. Follow its ignition tests, electrical specifications, timing information, and safety requirements. Do not substitute generic resistance or voltage values.
- Verify the spark plug before servicing or replacing it. Check the specified plug type and gap for that motorcycle.
- Check compatibility before buying a part. Confirm the coil or module part number, connectors, electrical specifications, and model-year fitment.
- Use a multimeter only as part of the specified procedure. It can help with electrical diagnosis, but it does not replace the manufacturer’s test steps.
