Friday Practice sends the 10 fastest riders directly to Q2; the rest go to Q1, where the top two advance. Q2 then decides grid positions 1–12, with Q1 performance ordering the remaining places. The Sprint runs roughly half the Grand Prix distance, scores only the top nine, and does not change Sunday’s starting grid. Tire allocations are fixed per event but compound choices are strategic, while penalties depend on the infringement and circumstances rather than on a separate Sprint-only code.
What the MotoGP Sprint is in 2026
MotoGP introduced the Sprint in 2023. It is a shorter Saturday race designed to add a second competitive result to the weekend without replacing the traditional Grand Prix. The official format describes the Sprint as approximately half the number of Grand Prix laps. Its exact distance and duration therefore vary with the circuit; the Sprint is not defined by one universal kilometre figure or time limit.

For context, MotoGP reported that the average Grand Prix distance during the 2024 season was 114.7 km, and the average winning time was 40 minutes 54 seconds. Those are 2024-season Grand Prix averages published in 2025, not fixed Sprint targets. A particular Sprint can be shorter or longer depending on its circuit and race conditions.
Sprint points
Only the first nine finishers score Sprint points. The scale is deliberately smaller than the Sunday scoring system:

A rider can therefore win the Sprint and score 12 points while another rider wins Sunday’s Grand Prix and receives the larger Grand Prix award. Sprint points count toward the championship, but the Sprint result itself is not used to reseed Sunday’s grid in the 2026 format.
How 2026 Sprint grid positions are decided
1. Friday Practice creates the Q1 and Q2 groups
The Friday Practice classification determines who gets direct access to Q2. The 10 fastest riders go straight into Q2. Every other rider must contest Q1, including anyone who has not made the top 10 in the relevant Practice classification.
Q1 is not a separate race. It is a qualifying session in which riders fight for the final two Q2 places. The two fastest Q1 riders advance, producing a 12-rider Q2 field.
2. Q2 sets positions 1 through 12
Q2 decides the first 12 grid positions. The fastest Q2 rider takes pole, and the remainder of the Q2 classification fills positions 2 through 12. Because the two fastest Q1 riders join the 10 riders who advanced from Practice, a fast Q1 lap can still put a rider near the front of the grid.
3. Q1 orders the rest of the grid
Riders who do not reach Q2 are placed behind the Q2 field according to their Q1 performance. The fastest non-Q2 rider starts 13th, followed by the next fastest non-Q2 rider, subject to any penalties applied by the stewards or Race Direction.

4. One qualifying result supplies both 2026 grids
The qualifying procedure is shared by the Sprint and the Grand Prix. In practical terms, a rider’s Saturday starting position and Sunday starting position come from the same qualifying classification. Finishing the Sprint first, last, or not at all does not move that rider to a different Sunday grid position. A rider who qualified on pole remains the Sunday pole-sitter unless a separate penalty changes that position.
Grid rows, preparation time and physical spacing
Riders line up three per row. The Sprint grid receives 20 minutes before the start, the same period provided for the Grand Prix. MotoGP added five minutes to the earlier allowance so teams have more time for adjustments and wheel changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGrid spacing is a physical layout issue, not a qualifying rule. From the 2026 German Grand Prix, the reported layout for all classes kept three riders in each row but increased spacing to four metres between riders and 12 metres between rows. Those distances describe where motorcycles are placed on the asphalt; they do not alter who is classified first, second or third.
What changes in the announced 2027 format
MotoGP has announced a different qualifying structure for 2027. It should not be applied retroactively to 2026 races.
| Feature | 2026 format | Announced 2027 format |
|---|---|---|
| Saturday Sprint grid | Set by the shared qualifying process: Q2 positions 1–12, then Q1 order | Set by a dedicated Friday 15-minute Sprint qualifying session |
| Sunday Grand Prix grid | Uses the same qualifying result as the Sprint | Set by separate Grand Prix qualifying |
| Effect of Sprint result on Sunday | No automatic effect | The grids are already separate, so the Sprint result does not set Sunday’s positions |
| Key distinction | One qualifying process produces both grids | Separate qualifying sessions produce distinct Sprint and Grand Prix grids |
The announced change means a rider could qualify strongly for the Sprint yet start Sunday from a different place after the separate Grand Prix qualifying session. Until the 2027 rules and event instructions apply, explanations of a current 2026 weekend should use the shared-grid system above.

Which tires riders can use in a Sprint
Per-event tire allocation
MotoGP’s official 2025 tire-selection guide describes a standard event allowance of 22 slick tires: 10 fronts and 12 rears. The same guide describes 13 rain tires: six fronts and seven rears. The event supplier selects the specifications available for that circuit, and every rider receives the same quantity under the allocation framework.
| Tire type | Total per rider | Front | Rear | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Slick | 22 | 10 | 12 | Allocation described in the official 2025 guide; check the current regulation and event notice for the applicable season |
| Rain | 13 | 6 | 7 | Treaded tires for wet or damp conditions |
For the rear slick allocation described in that guide, seven tires are the softer Specification A and five are the harder Specification B. The front allocation and the specifications available at an individual circuit can vary. Riders who participate in both Q1 and Q2 may receive an additional preferred-specification front slick and one additional Specification A rear slick. These figures describe the published allocation framework; the current regulation text and event notice control a specific 2026 meeting.
Soft, medium and hard slicks
The 2026 MotoGP explainer identifies three dry-slick compound choices: soft, medium and hard. The supplier brings circuit-suitable options rather than every possible compound to every track.
| Compound | Main benefit | Main cost or risk |
|---|---|---|
| Soft | Reaches working temperature quickly and provides immediate grip | Usually wears sooner, especially on an abrasive or hot surface |
| Medium | Balances grip, warm-up and durability | May not deliver the soft’s peak bite or the hard’s longevity |
| Hard | Generally lasts longer and resists wear | Takes longer to reach working temperature and can feel less responsive early in a stint |
There is no universally best Sprint tire. Teams weigh track temperature, asphalt abrasiveness, expected race length and each rider’s way of loading the tire. A short Sprint can make fast warm-up especially valuable, but a hot or abrasive circuit can punish a soft rear before the chequered flag. Engineers also consider how a choice will affect the rest of the weekend because the allocation is finite.
Wet, damp and drying tracks
Rain tires have a tread pattern that moves water away from the contact patch. They are intended for wet or damp surfaces, where a slick can lose the ability to generate consistent grip.

Mixed conditions create a strategic decision rather than an automatic tire call. Staying on rain tires preserves wet-weather grip while the track remains damp; changing to slicks improves dry-track performance once enough of the racing line has dried. Under MotoGP’s flag-to-flag procedure, riders may be able to change motorcycles between wet and dry setups when the race declaration and procedure allow it. The event’s Race Direction instructions determine the exact procedure for that Sprint, so a general explanation should not be treated as a substitute for the meeting notice.
Michelin is identified as the premier-class supplier through the 2026 season. MotoGP has announced Pirelli as the supplier from 2027, so tire descriptions for a 2027 weekend should be checked against the then-current technical regulations and supplier specifications.

There is no separate Sprint-only penalty catalogue
MotoGP states that the overall race rules are generally the same for the Sprint and the Grand Prix, although the formats differ in areas such as duration, fuel limit and the track-limits threshold used for the shorter race. The examples below illustrate common rule applications; they are not an exhaustive list of every possible infringement or sanction.
Track limits in practice and qualifying
If a rider exceeds the track limits in practice or qualifying, MotoGP can cancel the lap time. That can remove a rider’s best lap from the classification and may alter whether the rider reaches Q2 or where the rider starts.

Track limits during the Sprint
In a race, stewards consider whether the rider gained an advantage and the circumstances of the incident. Possible responses described by MotoGP include an instruction to give back positions, a long-lap penalty or a time penalty.

The official explainer also describes a cumulative approach: a warning after three violations and an automatic long-lap penalty after five. A single clear advantage can trigger a separate penalty without waiting for that cumulative count. The exact application depends on the event’s monitoring, the rider’s advantage and the stewards’ decision.
Leaving the grid or missing the warm-up lap
A 2025 start-procedure update states that a rider who leaves the grid for any reason, or does not go to the grid, must start the warm-up lap from pit lane, return to the original grid position and serve a standard double long-lap penalty. A rider who misses the warm-up lap must start the race from pit lane. Because start procedures can be amended by season regulations and event instructions, the applicable rule should be verified for a particular incident.
How a Sprint weekend unfolds for a rider
- Friday Practice: The fastest 10 riders go directly to Q2; everyone else is assigned to Q1.
- Q1: The two fastest Q1 riders advance to Q2. The remaining Q1 riders are ordered behind the Q2 field.
- Q2: Twelve riders establish positions 1–12 for both the Sprint and Grand Prix under the 2026 format.
- Sprint preparation: Riders receive a 20-minute grid period for final adjustments and possible wheel changes.
- Saturday Sprint: The race runs approximately half the Grand Prix distance and awards points to the top nine finishers.
- Sunday Grand Prix: The Sprint result does not reseed the grid in 2026; the shared qualifying classification remains the starting order unless a separate penalty applies.
Practical answers to the questions fans ask
Can a rider start the Sprint from pole and a different place on Sunday?
Not because of the Sprint result under the 2026 system. Both grids come from the same qualifying process. A different Sunday position would require a separate qualifying classification under a future format or a penalty that changes the original grid order.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Does finishing outside the top nine earn any Sprint points?
No. Tenth place and every lower finishing position score zero Sprint points.
Can a rider use a different compound from a rival?
Yes, provided the chosen tire is among the circuit-specific options and within the rider’s allocation. The decision is a trade-off between warm-up and immediate grip on one side, and durability and consistency on the other.
Is every penalty applied immediately on track?
No. A lap can be cancelled in qualifying, a rider can be instructed to give back positions, a long-lap can be imposed, or a time penalty can be added. The response depends on the type of infringement, whether an advantage was gained and the stewards’ assessment.
Quick Recap
What to check when a ruling is disputed
- Identify the season: 2026 shared grids and the announced 2027 separate-qualifying system are different.
- Check whether the incident occurred in Practice, qualifying, the warm-up procedure or the race; track-limit and start-procedure consequences differ.
- Read the event’s Race Direction notice for the wet/dry declaration, flag-to-flag instructions and any local procedure.
- Use the applicable FIM regulation edition for a disputed infringement, because the examples above do not constitute an exhaustive penalty catalogue.
- Separate a rider’s qualifying position from the physical grid layout: three riders per row and measured row spacing do not change the classification.
