It awards points to the top nine finishers—12 for the winner down to one for ninth. Saturday Q1 and Q2 qualifying set the starting grid for both the Sprint and Sunday race, so the Sprint result does not change Sunday’s grid. MotoGP’s race-interruption rules use laps completed by the leader: fewer than three laps nullifies the race, at least three but less than three-quarters normally triggers a restart, and three-quarters or more makes the race complete with full points.
The grid system is scheduled to change in 2027, when a new Friday Sprint qualifying session will set the Sprint grid separately from Grand Prix qualifying.

MotoGP Sprint rules at a glance
| Question | 2026 answer |
|---|---|
| How long is a Sprint? | Approximately 50% of the Sunday Grand Prix’s lap count. The exact number is set for each circuit. |
| Who scores points? | The top nine finishers. |
| How many points does the winner get? | 12 points. |
| What sets the grid? | Saturday Q1 and Q2 set both the Sprint and Sunday Grand Prix grids. |
| Does the Sprint result alter Sunday’s grid? | No, under the 2026 format. |
| What happens after a red flag? | The result depends on laps completed by the leader and whether the three-quarter-distance threshold has been reached. |
These answers reflect MotoGP’s official explainers for the 2026 season. The published material describes the Sprint as following the same broad sporting concept as the Grand Prix, but the Sprint-specific application of every interruption and restart edge case is not set out in a separate public table. For unusual incidents, Race Direction and the governing regulations remain decisive.

MotoGP defines the Sprint as approximately half the number of laps scheduled for the Sunday race. “Approximately” matters because the lap count must be a whole number and circuits have different lengths. An odd-numbered Grand Prix can therefore produce a Sprint that is slightly less than half the Sunday distance.

The distance is not a universal kilometre figure. It is calculated from the event’s Grand Prix lap total and circuit length, then published in the event schedule. These official 2025 examples show how the rule works:
| Grand Prix example | Sunday laps | Sprint laps | Sunday distance | Sprint distance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thailand (Buriram), 2025 | 26 | 13 | 118.404 km | 59.202 km |
| Qatar (Lusail), 2025 | 22 | 11 | 118.36 km | 59.18 km |
| Spain (Jerez), 2025 | 25 | 12 | 110.575 km | 53.076 km |
For example, 25 Sunday laps at Jerez produced 12 Sprint laps rather than 12.5. That is why “half distance” should be read as a planning principle, not as a promise that the Sprint will always cover exactly half the kilometres or laps.
MotoGP’s official race-length explainer gives the current distance rule and examples: How Long is a MotoGP Race? A historical figure sometimes quoted in Sprint discussions is the 2024 average Sunday race distance of 114.7 km, with an average winning time of 40 minutes 54 seconds. That is context from the 2025 Sprint explainer, not a target that every current event must meet.
How Sprint points compare with Sunday points
The Sprint pays points to only nine riders. The Sunday Grand Prix pays the normal championship scale to the top 15, making the main race substantially more valuable in the standings.
| Finish | Sprint points | Sunday Grand Prix points |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 12 | 25 |
| 2 | 9 | 20 |
| 3 | 7 | 16 |
| 4 | 6 | 13 |
| 5 | 5 | 11 |
| 6 | 4 | 10 |
| 7 | 3 | 9 |
| 8 | 2 | 8 |
| 9 | 1 | 7 |
| 10 | — | 6 |
| 11 | — | 5 |
| 12 | — | 4 |
| 13 | — | 3 |
| 14 | — | 2 |
| 15 | — | 1 |
A Sprint victory is worth 12 points, while a Sunday victory is worth 25—more than twice as many. A rider can therefore gain meaningful championship ground on Saturday, but the Sunday result remains the larger single scoring opportunity.

How qualifying sets the Sprint and Sunday grids in 2026
Friday practice and Q1 access
Under the format explained for 2026, Friday practice determines which riders go directly into Q2. The remaining riders contest Q1, and the two fastest Q1 riders advance to Q2. This makes Friday performance important before either race has started: a rider outside the direct-Q2 group must use Q1 to earn a place in the final qualifying session.

Q1 and Q2 determine both starting orders
The combined qualifying result from Q1 and Q2 sets the grid for Saturday’s Sprint and Sunday’s Grand Prix. The same qualifying order is used twice. The Sprint is then run after qualifying, normally on Saturday, but its finishing order is not used to reshuffle the Sunday grid.
Why a Sprint result cannot improve Sunday’s start
A rider who wins the Sprint has not earned pole position for Sunday by virtue of that win. Likewise, a rider who crashes or finishes outside the points in the Sprint does not automatically lose the Sunday starting place earned in qualifying. The 2026 system deliberately lets riders race the shorter event without conserving position for the next day.
MotoGP Chief Sporting Officer Carlos Ezpeleta described the original concept this way: “The qualifying on Saturday will decide the grid for both the Sprint race and Sunday. So the riders are free to race in the Sprint, they don’t have to think about the grid position of the next day.” The statement explains the design of the format; the season-specific 2026 grid rule is set out in MotoGP’s current explainer.

What changes for the grid in 2027?
MotoGP has announced a different qualifying arrangement for 2027. A new Friday Sprint qualifying session will set the Sprint grid, while Grand Prix qualifying will set the Sunday race grid. That creates two separate qualifying pathways instead of carrying one Q1/Q2 result into both races.
This is an announced future format, not the rule for the 2026 season. When reading a schedule or older explainer, check the season: “the Sprint result does not affect Sunday’s grid” is accurate for 2026, while the 2027 change concerns how each grid is established before the races begin. The announcement is published at MotoGP introduces new weekend format from 2027.
What happens when a MotoGP race is red-flagged?
MotoGP measures the interruption thresholds by laps completed by the race leader, not by every rider’s individual lap count. If the calculated fraction of the original distance is not a whole number, MotoGP rounds the threshold down to a whole lap. For MotoGP, the key completion threshold is three-quarters of the original race distance; Moto2 and Moto3 use a different two-thirds threshold, so those figures should not be transferred to the premier class.
Fewer than three laps completed
If the leader has completed fewer than three laps when the race is stopped, the race is null and void. A completely new race is run if a restart is possible. If officials cannot restart it, the event is cancelled and does not count toward the championship.
At least three laps but less than three-quarters
When the leader has completed three or more laps but less than three-quarters of the original distance, Race Direction normally orders a restart. If no restart can be held, the points depend on how much of the original distance was completed:

- Less than 50% completed: half points.
- 50% or more completed: full points.
Those percentages refer to the original race distance, not the number of laps planned for a replacement race.
Three-quarters or more completed
Once the leader has completed at least three-quarters of the original distance, the race is deemed complete and full championship points are awarded. Because fractional thresholds are rounded down, the exact lap at which this happens depends on the event’s original lap total.

After a red flag, riders must return to pit lane with their motorcycles within five minutes. Race Direction then determines whether the classification stands, whether a restart is feasible and which riders are eligible.
For an intermediate interruption that leads to a restart, the published MotoGP procedure includes these conditions:

- Only riders classified as finishers in the first part may take part in the restart.
- The restart grid follows the finishing order from the first part.
- A rider classified one lap down starts from pit lane.
- A rider two or more laps down is ineligible for the restart.
- The restarted race covers the laps still needed to reach the original race distance, subject to a minimum of five laps.
- Any unserved penalty from the first part carries over.
These rules distinguish the original race distance from the restart distance. The second part is not automatically another full-length Grand Prix; it is calculated to complete the scheduled event, with the five-lap minimum protecting the restart from becoming a token run.

MotoGP’s interruption guide explains the thresholds, pit-lane return requirement and restart procedure: What Happens if a MotoGP Race is Red-Flagged?
Are Sprint red-flag rules exactly the same?
MotoGP’s general Sprint explanation says the Sprint follows the same broad rules as the Sunday race apart from its shorter distance and different points allocation. However, the official interruption pages describe MotoGP race procedures and do not provide a complete Sprint-specific table covering every restart, eligibility and points edge case.
That means the three-distance thresholds are useful for understanding how MotoGP handles race interruptions, but an unusual Sprint stoppage should not be treated as settled by analogy alone. The official Race Direction decision and the controlling FIM regulations govern the incident. In a straightforward case, the practical questions are: how many laps the leader completed, whether the three-quarter threshold was reached, whether a restart is possible, and which riders are classified as finishers.
What the Sprint changes for a race weekend
The format adds a second championship-scoring race without making Saturday’s result a qualifying session for Sunday. A rider’s weekend therefore has two separate performance targets in 2026:
- Qualify well enough in Q1 and Q2 to secure a strong starting place in both races.
- Convert the Sprint opportunity into up to 12 points.
- Return on Sunday for the longer race, where the winner can score 25 points and positions 10 through 15 still pay points.
The shorter distance also changes the margin for recovery. A rider has fewer laps to overcome a poor start or tyre-management problem than in the Grand Prix, while a red flag can alter the classification according to the leader’s completed laps rather than the distance an individual rider believes they have covered.
