There is no defensible single “most reliable” used Mercedes-Benz SUV across all models and years in the available evidence. Is there one most reliable used Mercedes SUV?
No. The available evidence does not compare GLK, GLC, GLE, GLS, GLA, and other Mercedes-Benz SUVs with consistent year-by-year measures. It therefore cannot support naming an overall winner or declaring one model line more dependable than another.

Two different kinds of evidence give a mixed picture. ForCar’s analysis, updated October 2026, groups NHTSA owner complaints by production run. Within its six-year GLK comparison, it reports the lowest complaint rate for 2013 and the highest for 2010:

These are ForCar calculations from NHTSA complaint records, not failure probabilities or observed defect rates for every owner. ForCar reports 891 GLK complaints overall and 4.66 complaints per production run, compared with 3.73 for its market comparison. It also notes that complaint data do not measure ordinary running costs or capture every fault. The analysis is a signal for further checking, not an official reliability rating.

Why 2013 is not a proven “best” year
Consumer Reports search-result excerpts describe 2013 GLK reliability as below average compared with same-year vehicles, while describing 2014 and 2015 as about average. Consumer Reports says its reliability history is based on subscriber surveys, but its pages were not accessible for direct inspection; these descriptions should be treated as reported excerpts, not a complete rating table.
That difference matters: complaint counts and subscriber-survey ratings measure different things. Taken together, the evidence makes 2013, 2014, and 2015 reasonable GLK years to investigate first within the complaint comparison, not a guarantee that those years are trouble-free or that 2013 is the best GLK to buy.

Which Mercedes SUV years should I avoid?
The evidence does not justify a blanket avoid list across Mercedes-Benz SUVs. For the GLK alone, 2010 has the highest complaint rate in ForCar’s comparison, while 2013 has the lowest. That does not prove every 2010 is a poor purchase or every 2013 is a good one; complaint records are not a census of repairs and do not reveal the condition or maintenance of an individual vehicle.
Use a high complaint signal as a reason to investigate a particular vehicle carefully, not as an automatic veto. Likewise, a lower signal should not outweigh missing records, an unresolved recall, or serious inspection findings.

How to evaluate a specific used Mercedes SUV
- Get the maintenance and repair history. Ask the seller for invoices, service records, and ownership information. Compare the documented work with the correct model-year information in the Mercedes-Benz USA service and warranty manual portal, which lists information by model year and vehicle line, including SUVs.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Have a qualified Mercedes specialist assess the vehicle before purchase. A model-year reputation or consumer diagnostic scan cannot establish the mechanical condition of that individual SUV.
- Check recalls by VIN. Use NHTSA’s recalls lookup to search the vehicle identification number, then ask the seller for documentation showing that any recall repairs were completed. NHTSA also supports searches by year, make, and model, but the VIN lookup is the practical check for a specific car.
- Use diagnostic equipment cautiously, if at all. The 2013 GLK owner’s manual advises maintenance and repairs at a qualified specialist workshop and warns that equipment connected to the diagnostic port can drain the starter battery or reset emissions-monitoring information. Confirm compatibility and safe use for the exact vehicle; do not leave a device connected or treat its results as a replacement for an inspection.
What complaint and recall data can—and cannot—tell you
NHTSA administers safety recalls and reviews safety complaints. Complaints can help identify patterns worth investigating, but people do not report every repair, and complaint counts do not measure routine maintenance expense, total ownership cost, or overall owner satisfaction. A recall search answers a different question: whether a specific vehicle has an open safety recall. It does not certify that the vehicle is otherwise reliable.
There is also no directly comparable Mercedes-specific repair-cost or total-cost-of-ownership statistic established here. For broad context only, J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study reported an industry average of 204 problems per 100 vehicles after three years of ownership; that is not a Mercedes SUV result and should not be used to rank used Mercedes years. The study notes that software and mobile-phone integration issues affect owners in the broader market, but that is not a Mercedes-specific finding.
