Rad Power Bikes confirmed another round of layoffs in July 2024, but did not disclose how many people lost their jobs or which teams were affected. The company said rising costs and economic headwinds made the cuts necessary to support the business’s long-term sustainability. Since then, Rad’s former company entered bankruptcy and certain assets were acquired by Life EV; the Rad brand continues under new ownership.
Why did Rad Power Bikes make more layoffs in July 2024?
In an emailed statement reported by GeekWire on August 5, 2024, a Rad Power Bikes spokesperson said: “Last month, Rad Power Bikes made the difficult decision to reduce our team’s size so we can ensure the brand’s longevity, continue on our mission, and serve our rider community.” The spokesperson also cited rising costs and economic headwinds, describing the reduction as necessary for the business’s long-term sustainability. Those were the company’s stated reasons, not an independently established accounting of every factor behind the decision. GeekWire’s August 2024 report
The company did not say how many positions were eliminated or identify affected departments. TechCrunch sources, as summarized by GeekWire, said the cuts mostly affected product-development teams; that was sourced reporting, not a department breakdown confirmed by Rad.
How many rounds of layoffs had Rad announced by then?
GeekWire called the July 2024 reduction the sixth round of cuts since 2021. That count belongs to the timeline covered by its August 2024 report, not to Rad’s entire later history. The report cited 100 positions cut in April 2021 and 63 in July 2022, followed by rounds in December 2022, April 2023, and July 2023. It did not provide a headcount for the July 2024 cuts.

The layoffs came after a period of rapid growth: GeekWire reported that Rad began direct-to-consumer online e-bike sales in 2015, raised $304 million in 2021, and reached a reported $1.65 billion valuation in October 2021, citing PitchBook for the valuation. These figures describe the company’s earlier expansion; they do not establish the cause of the 2024 cuts.
What happened to Rad Power Bikes after the 2024 layoffs?
Rad disclosed serious financial difficulties in November 2025 and filed a Washington WARN notice concerning a possible cessation of operations. GeekWire described the notice as precautionary at the time. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 2025. In its 2026 coverage, GeekWire reported gross revenue listed in the bankruptcy filing of $129.8 million in 2023, $103.8 million in 2024, and $63.3 million toward the end of 2025; those are filing figures reported by GeekWire, not a forecast or a current revenue measure. A January 2026 asset auction produced a $13.2 million winning bid from Life EV. The court-approved acquisition of certain Rad assets closed on February 27, 2026. It was an asset transaction, not a continuation of the former company on unchanged terms. In March 2026, Life EV CEO Robert Provost called it “not a continuation of Rad Power, more like a phoenix,” and described it as “The rebirth.” His comments about rehiring employees, retaining or expanding stores, US assembly, and a discounted battery-replacement program were plans he described at that time, not confirmation that each plan was completed. As of Rad Life Mobility’s US purchase terms, updated September 17, 2026, the company is the seller of Rad-branded e-bikes and related products in the United States. That means the brand remains on sale, but it should not be confused with the former independent Seattle business. Current terms say the new owner has no obligation to provide warranty or service for products bought before December 15, 2025, while reserving the possibility of announcing discretionary upgrade or service policies. Owners of older bikes should check the live official terms for their product and location rather than rely on the customer-service assurances made in 2024 or plans discussed in March 2026. In 2024, Rad’s spokesperson said the company planned to continue seven-day phone and chat customer service and cited more than 1,200 retail and service providers across North America. Those statements described the company’s position at that time; they are not a current service or warranty guarantee.
