Reliability scores are meaningful only alongside the question each source measures. iSeeCars, J.D. Power, and Consumer Reports do not provide interchangeable scores, and their results should not be combined into one league table.

J.D. Power’s 2026 release says, “As owners hold onto their vehicles longer, the long-term ownership experience matters more than ever,” said Jason Norton, director of auto benchmarking at J.D. Power. The statement reflects the study’s ownership context; it is not a model-specific endorsement of the four ranked SUVs.

The ranking alone does not settle that question. It names vehicles in a price-defined ranking, but does not establish each candidate’s current new-vehicle MSRP, local inventory, model-year availability, or out-the-door price. MSRP also is not the full amount due: trim, destination, taxes, and fees affect the final price.

If your ceiling means a new SUV’s out-the-door cost, verify the exact model year and trim with a current local dealer quote before relying on the ranking. If it means a used vehicle’s purchase price, the specific model year and condition matter as much as the nameplate. The available evidence does not establish a definitive list of new SUVs that can currently be purchased under $40,000.
