There is no defensible 2025 winner or runner-up based on the available evidence. This article focuses on U.S. heavy-duty pickup trucks and their diesel engines; medium-duty and Class 8 trucks involve different engines and applications. The redesigned 2025 Ram/Cummins 6.7-liter is a candidate worth investigating, but its changes do not prove it is more reliable than its rivals.
Why a 2025 reliability ranking cannot be confirmed
A meaningful ranking would require comparable, long-term evidence about failures or ownership costs for the exact 2025 Ford, GM and Ram heavy-duty pickup configurations. The available manufacturer materials give specifications, describe design changes and make product claims; they do not provide an exposure-adjusted comparison of breakdowns or repair costs. Nor do they establish a named independent statistic that would support a winner and runner-up.
That distinction matters: a new design feature, high power rating or manufacturer’s “most reliable” language is not a measured reliability result. Owner reports can offer useful leads, but without comparable vehicle histories and usage they cannot establish which engine has the lowest failure rate.
What changed on the 2025 Ram/Cummins
Pickup ratings and transmission
Cummins announced a new 6.7-liter Turbo Diesel pickup engine system for 2025 Ram Heavy Duty trucks. Cummins lists the High-Output pickup version at 430 horsepower and 1,075 lb-ft of torque. Ram’s January 7, 2025 announcement says the pickup diesel is paired with a new TorqueFlite HD eight-speed automatic.

Those figures describe a product specification, not durability. Cummins also lists 360 horsepower and 800 lb-ft for chassis-cab applications; those ratings apply to chassis-cab trucks and should not be substituted for pickup figures.
Redesign and service access
Cummins and Ram describe changes including a redesigned block and head, updated intake and fuel-system components, glow plugs, and top-side access to the oil and dual fuel filters. Better access may make some service tasks more convenient, but it does not establish that the engine will experience fewer failures over its lifetime.

The transmission is part of the truck’s complete powertrain and affects the ownership experience. Transmission performance or reliability should not be treated as evidence of engine reliability, or vice versa.
How to interpret the “runner-up” question
Cummins Vice President – Global On-Highway and Pickup Jane Beaman said in the company’s January 2025 announcement: “We’ve improved the power, efficiency, serviceability and driveability of our latest 6.7L Turbo Diesel engine, making the 2025 Ram Heavy Duty lineup the most desirable yet.” This is a manufacturer’s statement about its product, not independent evidence of comparative reliability. The same standard applies to any brand’s promotional superlatives.

How to compare two used or new heavy-duty pickups
Compare the exact truck and its history, not just the engine name. A model-year label alone may not identify the engine generation, application or full powertrain configuration.
- Identify the exact configuration. Confirm model year, engine generation and application, then identify the transmission and complete powertrain. Do not assume that ratings or maintenance information for a chassis-cab version apply to a pickup.
- Review documented maintenance and repair history. Ask for invoices and service records, not only a verbal description. Check whether scheduled work was completed for the truck’s actual use and duty cycle.
- Use the applicable owner’s manual. Follow the manual for that model, engine and use case rather than relying on a generic diesel interval. Cummins’ FAQ, updated May 2026, says service needs vary by engine and duty cycle, contrasting long-haul daily use with personal-vehicle use. GM’s 2025 Duramax 6.6L owner manual supplement warns that improper maintenance can cause costly damage that may not be covered by warranty.
- Check recalls and investigations by VIN. Use the specific vehicle’s VIN rather than treating a search result for an engine or model family as proof that an individual truck is affected—or clear. NHTSA explains that recall searches use publication dates, while the displayed safety-issue date refers to when the issue was reported.
- Assess local service support. Consider whether qualified service and parts are accessible where the truck will work. A design that is easier to service in principle is not a substitute for confirming that the necessary service is available locally.
- Match the truck to the job. Verify that the truck’s payload and towing configuration suits the intended load. A truck operated within its suitable application is not directly comparable to one used under very different demands.
What engine lifespan figures can—and cannot—tell you
There is no single lifespan figure in the available evidence that predicts how long a particular 2025 heavy-duty pickup diesel will last. Cummins’ FAQ addresses “What is a diesel engine’s lifespan?” by emphasizing variation with engine, design, application and use. A broad industry estimate would not answer the more specific question of expected life for one exact pickup configuration.

Likewise, horsepower and torque figures tell you what output a manufacturer publishes, not how often an engine fails. A reliability comparison needs evidence about failures across vehicles with known mileage, usage and maintenance—not a towing maximum, a layout description or an isolated anecdote.

If you want a research lead, include the substantially updated Ram/Cummins 6.7-liter in your comparison and inspect its service records and exact configuration closely. Do not call it the proven most reliable engine, and do not name another engine as runner-up: the available evidence does not establish either position. For an individual truck, documented care, the correct application and a VIN-specific recall check provide more actionable evidence than an unsupported brand ranking.
