Alfa Romeo’s sports-car history ranges from prewar grand tourers to coachbuilt postwar rarities, competition-linked road cars and modern lightweight machines. This is an editorial ranking, not an official marque list: it includes road-going sports cars and GTs with a clear performance or competition connection, but excludes racing prototypes from the ranked entries. The order weighs design, engineering, motorsport lineage, influence, rarity and road-car character; “best” is a reasoned selection, not an objective measurement.

Manufacturer heritage material links cars such as the Duetto and 4C to the marque’s racing tradition, while the Alfa Romeo Museum traces a record that includes 11 Mille Miglia victories and four 24 Hours of Le Mans wins in the marque’s 1920s–1930s period. Those achievements provide context, not a claim that every road car below was a direct racing derivative. Specifications and figures cited here are manufacturer-published unless otherwise noted, rather than independent test results. (Alfa Romeo heritage series; Alfa Romeo Museum racing history)

How the ten are ranked

The list covers production and limited-run road cars, not competition-only prototypes. Entries are judged on a consistent mix of styling distinction, technical interest, racing connection, influence, rarity and intended road use. The ranking favors cars that make a particularly strong case across several of those qualities rather than treating horsepower or scarcity alone as decisive.

1. 8C 2900

The 8C 2900 represents Alfa Romeo’s prewar blend of speed and grand-touring presence. A specific example documented by Alfa Romeo at the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed was the 1938 8C 2900B Speciale tipo “Le Mans.” Its manufacturer-published specification lists a 2,905 cc inline eight with twin camshafts and twin supercharging, producing 220 hp, with a stated top speed of 150 mph. Those figures describe that named example; they should not be generalized to every 8C 2900 variant. The combination of sophisticated forced induction and long-distance intent makes it a compelling starting point for the marque’s sports-car story. (Alfa Romeo / Stellantis Media, 2013)

2. 33 Stradale (1967)

Designed by Franco Scaglione and premiered at Monza in 1967, the original 33 Stradale is one of Alfa Romeo’s clearest road-car links to its racing program. The heritage account records only 12 examples. Alfa Romeo’s 2013 Goodwood release gives the prototype a 1,995 cc V8 rated at 230 hp and a stated 163 mph top speed; those are prototype figures, not specifications to assume for every series car. Its significance is as a scarce road-going counterpart to the Tipo 33 era, not as a racer in disguise. (Alfa Romeo heritage series; Alfa Romeo / Stellantis Media, 2013)

3. 6C 2500 Super Sport “Villa d’Este”

The Villa d’Este belongs here for the way postwar performance met individual coachbuilt presentation. Alfa Romeo says 36 examples of the 6C 2500 Super Sport were produced and notes that the model won the Villa d’Este concours in 1949. That documented rarity and its connection to a celebrated design award make it a distinctive postwar grand tourer, rather than simply another entry in a list of fast cars. 4. 4C Spider

The 4C Spider made lightweight construction central to its character: Alfa Romeo’s 2015 launch announcement describes a two-seat car built around a carbon-fiber monocoque and powered by an all-aluminum, turbocharged 1,750 cc engine. The release states an output density of 136 horsepower per liter. It also explicitly places the 4C in a design lineage that includes the 8C 2900 B and 1967 33 Stradale. The 4C is now listed by Alfa Romeo among out-of-production models, so the 2015 announcement describes launch specification, not current production or availability. (Alfa Romeo / Stellantis Media, 2015; Alfa Romeo sports-car page)

5. 2000 Sportiva

The 2000 Sportiva is a scarce 1950s GT whose engineering makes it more than a styling curiosity. Alfa Romeo’s Goodwood material lists a 1,997 cc twin-cam four-cylinder engine producing 138 hp and a De Dion rear suspension. That specification suggests a deliberate focus on handling architecture as well as power, while the model’s limited presence gives it an unusual place between the marque’s earlier grand tourers and later road-going sports cars. 6. Giulia GTA and 1750 GT Am

The Giulia GTA and 1750 GT Am bring touring-car competition into the story without requiring a competition prototype to count as a road car. Alfa Romeo’s 2013 account describes the 1970 GT Am with a 1,985 cc twin-cam engine, twin-spark ignition and Spica fuel injection, rated at 220 hp, with a stated 144 mph top speed. It explains “Am” as “America.” The model’s place in this ranking rests on its competition-oriented engineering and touring-car connection; the cited performance figures are manufacturer-published, not independent measurements. (Alfa Romeo / Stellantis Media, 2013)

7. 1600 Spider “Duetto”

The Duetto earns its place through a different kind of sports-car appeal: open-air road use, a distinct Pininfarina connection and a shape that became one of Alfa Romeo’s enduring signatures. Alfa Romeo’s heritage account identifies Franco Martinengo as its designer. Unlike the low-volume rarities elsewhere on this list, the Duetto’s importance lies in giving the marque’s sporting identity a recognizable, usable roadster form. (Alfa Romeo heritage series)

8. 8C Competizione

The 8C Competizione is a modern interpretation of Alfa Romeo’s performance-GT tradition. The heritage series lists a 450 hp V8, a manufacturer-stated 0–100 km/h time of 4.2 seconds and a production total of 500 units. Its place is not based on a claim that those numbers outrank every rival, but on the way a limited production run and V8 power gave a contemporary Alfa Romeo a clear connection to the marque’s grand-touring past. 9. Montreal

The Montreal earns a spot as a design-led GT with an origin story tied to Expo 67. Its inclusion broadens the list beyond lightweight two-seaters and competition-flavored models: it reflects Alfa Romeo’s ability to make the sporting grand tourer an object of visual identity in its own right. Alfa Romeo’s heritage series covers the concept connection and production model, making that distinction important: the Expo origin belongs to the car’s concept history, not a claim that the production car itself was an exhibition prototype. 10. The new 33 Stradale (announced 2023)

The modern 33 Stradale is a road type-approved, handcrafted project announced as a 33-unit run. Alfa Romeo said at the time of its 2023 announcement that all units had sold. That is a dated announcement, not evidence of present resale availability or pricing. It belongs in this selection as a limited-run road car consciously connected by name and ambition to the 1967 original, while remaining distinct from both that historic model and the Tipo 33 competition cars. (Alfa Romeo / Stellantis Media, 2023)

Where the competition prototypes fit

Alfa Romeo’s Tipo 33 racers are essential context for the 33 Stradale, but they are not ranked above as road cars. The Alfa Romeo Museum credits Autodelta with the marque’s return to competition in the 1960s and says the Tipo 33 program culminated in sports-car World Championships in 1975 and 1977. That racing lineage helps explain why road-going and homologation-related models matter, while keeping the distinction between a race car and a road car clear. (Alfa Romeo Museum racing history)
