For used pickups in CARFAX’s 2019–2023 sample, the Toyota Tacoma had the lowest reported likelihood of an unexpected repair among small and midsize trucks, and the Toyota Tundra led the full-size group. Those findings are useful starting points, not guarantees for every model year, engine or truck. The available data supports a comparison of 11 models—not a defensible, single-source ranking of 20—so this guide reports the models and measures the evidence actually covers.

What “reliable” means in these pickup rankings

Reliability rankings are not interchangeable. CARFAX, Consumer Reports and J.D. Power examine different vehicles and use different measures, so their results should be read side by side, not blended into one score.

  • CARFAX repair likelihood: Its August 2026 small/midsize and full-size rankings use U.S. maintenance records for model years 2019–2023 to estimate the likelihood of an unexpected repair over five years. CARFAX also reports how many vehicles remain on the road as a separate, longer-term view.
  • Consumer Reports ratings: Its 2026 Buying Guide separates predicted reliability from owner satisfaction, road-test results and overall score. Results can vary by configuration and engine; an overall score is not a reliability score.
  • J.D. Power dependability: Its 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study surveyed original owners of 2022 model-year vehicles after three years and counts reported problems per 100 vehicles across 184 problem areas.

These sources answer different questions: CARFAX estimates repair likelihood in a defined used-vehicle sample, Consumer Reports presents separate ratings for particular versions, and J.D. Power counts owner-reported problems. None establishes a universal top 20.

Reliable small and midsize pickup trucks

CARFAX’s August 17, 2026 ranking compares five small and midsize models from its 2019–2023 sample. The repair-likelihood percentages below are CARFAX’s average estimates of an unexpected repair over five years—not overall reliability scores. “Still on the road” is a separate model-line measure, over a different time span.

CARFAX rank Pickup Unexpected-repair likelihood Model-line vehicles still on the road
1 Toyota Tacoma 2.8% (segment average: 5.7%; average for all trucks: 9.1%) 82.0% since 2006
2 Ford Ranger 3.5% 61.6% since 2006
3 Nissan Frontier 4.4% 72.4% since 2006
4 Honda Ridgeline 5.7% (equal to the segment average) 89.6% since 2006
5 Jeep Gladiator 7.2% 96.7% since 2020

The Tacoma is the leader in this comparison, but CARFAX describes year-specific variation for the Frontier, Ridgeline and Gladiator, including dips around redesigns or added technology. The Gladiator’s road-survival figure starts in 2020, reflecting its shorter history; it should not be compared as though it covered the same span as the other models.

Reliable full-size pickup trucks

CARFAX’s August 17, 2026 full-size ranking covers six models from the same 2019–2023 sample. The full-size segment average for unexpected repairs is 10.5%; CARFAX’s average for all trucks is 9.1%.

CARFAX rank Pickup Unexpected-repair likelihood Model-line vehicles still on the road
1 Toyota Tundra 5.6% 81.7% since 2006
2 Nissan Titan 9.4% 76.9% since 2006
3 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 10.2% 80.0% since 2006
4 GMC Sierra 1500 10.7% 83.1% since 2006
5 Ford F-150 11.5% 79.2% since 2006
6 Ram 1500 12.5% 57.0% since 2006

The Tundra’s 5.6% is the lowest repair-likelihood estimate in CARFAX’s full-size comparison. CARFAX also notes that reliability dipped after the 2022 redesign, which replaced the V8 with turbocharged V6 options and added technology. A strong model-line result therefore does not establish that every Tundra generation or powertrain is equally dependable.

The Titan ended after the 2024 model year, according to CARFAX. Its discontinued status is distinct from its position in the used-truck repair-likelihood comparison.

How other 2026 and 2025 ratings fit

Consumer Reports: use the reliability field, not the overall score

Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide lists separate overall, survey, road-test and predicted-reliability fields. For example, it gives the Honda Ridgeline 3.5L an overall score of 79, the Ford Maverick 2.0T 74 and the Toyota Tacoma 2.4T 45. Those are overall scores, not reliability-only ratings. The source also lists reliability as a low for the 2026 Nissan Frontier 3.8L, Chevrolet Colorado 2.7T and GMC Canyon 2.7T. These are assessments for the versions covered in that guide, not proof that every year or configuration of those model lines shares the same result.

The apparent contrast between strong CARFAX results for older Tacomas and the lower overall score for the 2026 Tacoma 2.4T is not a direct contradiction: the sources assess different model years and measures.

J.D. Power: owner-reported problems after three years

J.D. Power’s 2025 study reported 202 problems per 100 vehicles. It surveyed 34,175 original owners of 2022 model-year vehicles after three years and covered 184 problem areas. The Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Silverado and Chevrolet Silverado HD were among the model-level award recipients. That is an award-recipient finding, not a complete truck ranking or a repair-likelihood estimate.

How to use these rankings when buying a pickup

Start with the kind of truck you need, then narrow the search to the specific year, generation and powertrain. The rankings can help identify candidates, but they cannot determine whether an individual used truck is in good condition or suited to your workload.

  1. Choose the truck class and configuration. Decide whether a small/midsize or full-size pickup fits your needs, including cab and bed layout.
  2. Identify the exact model year and generation. A redesign or added technology can change the picture, as CARFAX’s Tundra note illustrates.
  3. Check the engine and powertrain. Compare the version you are considering—not just the model name—with the source’s covered version or sample.
  4. Match capability to the job. Verify towing and payload requirements for the exact truck and configuration; a reliability ranking does not establish either capacity.
  5. Inspect the specific used vehicle. Review its maintenance and history records, then arrange an independent mechanical inspection and test drive. CARFAX cautions that its history information may not capture a vehicle’s complete history.

These rankings do not provide a cross-model total-cost score. Fuel use, repair costs, condition and your actual towing or payload needs remain separate considerations.
