The Lexus IS is the strongest-supported overall choice for reliability in the current evidence: it leads Lexus models in Consumer Reports’ predicted-reliability findings and was the top overall model in J.D. Power’s 2026 Vehicle Dependability Study. For luxury small SUVs, Consumer Reports highlights the UX, NX, and NX Hybrid. These findings use different methods, so they support a practical shortlist—not a precise ranking of every Lexus on sale.
How the Lexus models rank by current reliability evidence
This is an evidence-tiered ranking, not a single-score comparison. J.D. Power measures problems reported by owners of three-year-old vehicles; Consumer Reports predicts reliability from survey histories. Their results can help narrow a purchase, but neither establishes how every current model year, generation, or powertrain will perform over the long term.
-
Lexus IS — strongest overall evidence
J.D. Power named the IS its top overall model in the 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. Consumer Reports’ 2026 reliability findings also identify the IS as the Lexus leader, with well-above-average predicted reliability. Together, these are the clearest current signals for an overall Lexus pick, though one is a retrospective dependability result and the other a forecast.
-
Lexus UX — strong evidence among small SUVs
Consumer Reports includes the UX among its three most reliable luxury small SUVs, and J.D. Power lists it among the model-level award recipients in its 2026 study. That combination makes it a well-supported small-SUV option; the sources do not establish an exact reliability order among the UX, NX, and NX Hybrid.

-
Lexus NX and NX Hybrid — strong small-SUV evidence
Consumer Reports names both the NX and NX Hybrid among the three most reliable luxury small SUVs. It predicts above-average reliability for the 2026 NX based on 2023–2025 models. Treat that as a forecast informed by recent model history, not as a completed long-term record for every 2026 configuration.
-
Lexus GX — positive dependability recognition
The GX is a model-level award recipient in J.D. Power’s 2026 study. The available current evidence does not provide a comparable all-Lexus score or a Consumer Reports placement that would establish its exact position against the IS, UX, or NX.
-
Lexus ES and RX — promising, but less directly comparable evidence
Consumer Reports predicts above-average reliability for the redesigned 2026 ES, drawing on the prior ES generation and RZ EV data. Because the ES is substantially changed, that prediction should not be treated as years of observed results for the new model. J.D. Power’s 2024 study of 2021 vehicles gave the ES and RX model-level awards. Separately, J.D. Power’s 2026 RX model page reports an 82/100 quality-and-reliability owner rating; that is not the same measure as a Vehicle Dependability Study award.

J.D. Power: problems reported after three years
In its 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, J.D. Power placed Lexus first among premium brands for the fourth consecutive year, with 151 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). Lower PP100 indicates fewer reported problems. The study was based on 33,268 original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership, and covered 184 problem areas across nine categories. It was fielded from December 2024 through November 2025. The result describes those older vehicles and their owners’ reports; it does not directly measure every Lexus currently on sale.
Consumer Reports: predicted reliability
Consumer Reports’ 2026 brand reliability findings, published December 4, 2025, rank Lexus third among brands. The report draws on about 380,000 vehicles across model years 2000–2025 and a few early 2026 vehicles. Its predictions use members’ reports of problems during the prior 12 months, consider 20 trouble areas, and account for severity and owner impact. The model score is on a 1–100 scale.

Consumer Reports says every Lexus model in its 2026 ranking is average or better, led by the IS; it also names the NX, NX Hybrid, and UX as the three most reliable luxury small SUVs. These are predictions based on reported histories, not guarantees for a specific vehicle. A new or substantially changed model has less directly applicable history than a model with several years of data.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which Lexus is most reliable for your needs?
- For the strongest overall reliability case: Start with the IS, the only model supported here by both the J.D. Power overall-model result and Consumer Reports’ Lexus predicted-reliability lead.
- For a luxury small SUV: Compare the UX, NX, and NX Hybrid. Consumer Reports highlights all three; J.D. Power also recognizes the UX in its 2026 study.
- If considering a GX: Its J.D. Power recognition is a positive signal, but the evidence cited here does not put it on a comparable all-model scale.
- If considering an ES or RX: Keep the date and measure attached to each result. The ES prediction concerns the redesigned 2026 model; the RX’s 82/100 is an owner rating on a model page, while its J.D. Power award is from the 2024 study of 2021 vehicles.
There is not enough evidence here to declare Lexus hybrids uniformly more or less reliable than their gasoline counterparts. The NX Hybrid is specifically included in Consumer Reports’ luxury small-SUV shortlist, but that category finding does not compare it directly with a gasoline NX or prove the same result for other Lexus hybrid powertrains.
What to check before buying a specific Lexus
A model-level result is a starting point. Reliability depends on the particular model year, generation, powertrain, and vehicle history, so check the individual car before buying.
Quick Recap
- Match the evidence to the vehicle. Confirm its model year, generation, and powertrain. A result based on 2023 vehicles or prior-generation data may not describe a redesigned model or a different hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or EV version.
- Check open recalls by VIN. Consumer Reports’ RX page notes a recall affecting certain NX, RX, and TX model years. Applicability depends on the vehicle; verify the VIN through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall lookup.
- Review maintenance and repair records. Look for documented scheduled service and repairs, and have a qualified mechanic inspect a used vehicle. A strong model-level reputation cannot establish how an individual car was maintained.
- Keep unlike scores separate. J.D. Power’s PP100, Consumer Reports’ 1–100 predicted-reliability score, and a model-page owner rating have different methods and comparison groups. They are not interchangeable numbers.
