Consumer Reports’ 2026 findings offer additional signals for several models, but they do not establish one universal winner. How to interpret the reliability studies
U.S. dependability: problems after three years
J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study measures problems owners reported over the preceding 12 months in three-year-old vehicles. Its sample included 33,268 original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles, with fieldwork from December 2024 through November 2025. Japan initial quality: the first months of ownership
J.D. Power Japan’s 2025 Initial Quality Study covers a different window and market. It surveyed 20,101 owners whose vehicles had been owned for two to nine months. Consumer Reports: useful signals, limited detail here
Consumer Reports’ 2026 search-result snippets place Toyota, Subaru, and Lexus at the top of its brand reliability ratings, and identify the 4Runner and Passport as well above average. Does powertrain affect the comparison?
J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. VDS reported different average problem rates by powertrain: 198 PP100 for gas vehicles, 213 PP100 for hybrids, 237 PP100 for battery electric vehicles, and 281 PP100 for plug-in hybrids. These are study-wide averages, not SUV-specific results; they do not show that every gas SUV is more dependable than every electrified SUV. How to choose among these SUVs
- Match the evidence to your market. U.S. dependability awards do not automatically apply to Japan-market versions, trims, or nameplates.
- Compare the same vehicle class and use. A compact SUV award and a premium midsize SUV award identify category leaders, not direct alternatives for every buyer.
- Check the exact generation and powertrain. A redesign can make older-generation history a weaker guide, and study averages vary by powertrain.
- Use the study’s measurement window. Three-year dependability and first-month initial quality answer different ownership questions.
- Assess the specific vehicle. Population-level surveys cannot reveal an individual used SUV’s maintenance history, accident record, or present condition. Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection and review available service records before buying.
Which Japanese SUV lasts the longest?
The findings available here do not establish a longest-lasting Japanese SUV or a verified lifespan comparison. Dependability awards and reliability surveys measure reported problems within defined study periods; they are not mileage or vehicle-lifespan guarantees. A used SUV’s condition depends in part on its maintenance and history, so check the individual vehicle rather than treating a brand or award as proof of remaining life.
