Honda’s Prelude prototype and Civic Type R package, Mitsubishi’s rally- and pop-culture-inspired builds, and Lotus’s bespoke electric cars showed why the event is more than a new-car launch stage. Held January 10–12 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan, the show brought together custom cars, motorsport projects, and production-oriented reveals.
How the 2025 show’s standouts were chosen
Tokyo Auto Salon is a custom-car and car-related product show, not simply a venue for production-car debuts. The highlights below are selected for newness, engineering novelty, visual distinction, and how clearly each vehicle reflects the show’s customization and motorsport culture. Their reveal status matters: a world debut is not the same as a prototype, a planned production package, or a bespoke display already shown elsewhere.

Toyota GR Yaris M Concept: the engineering headline
A world debut with a radically different layout
The GR Yaris M Concept made its world debut on January 10, 2025. Toyota moved the engine from the production GR Yaris’s usual front position to a rear-mid position and retained drive to all four wheels—a fundamental change in layout, not just a body-kit exercise. What Toyota said about the engine and development
The event report identifies the M Concept’s engine as a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo, called G20E, then under development. It relays projected output figures of more than 400 PS for a road version and more than 600 PS for a racing version; these are figures reported at the event, not independently verified production specifications. The concept’s development chief and chief engineer, Naohiko Saito, described its origin in Japanese: “このクルマの開発は、モリゾウさんとの会話から始まったんです” (“Development of this car began with a conversation with Morizo.”). The event report also recorded Saito saying real-vehicle testing had begun and that the team planned to enter the 2025 Super Taikyu series at that time; that was a plan reported then, not confirmation of the eventual outcome. Honda: a production-oriented Civic Type R package and a Prelude prototype
Civic Type R Racing Black Package
Honda announced the Civic Type R Racing Black Package as a production-model premiere planned for January 2025. That makes it a different kind of reveal from a clean-sheet concept: a planned package for an existing performance model. Prelude prototype
The Prelude shown at the salon was a prototype based on the Prelude Concept first presented at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show—not the final production car. Honda added aero parts and described the prototype as using a hybrid system with sporty control functions. Together, the two Hondas represented distinct development stages: a planned package for an established performance car and a prototype signaling the direction of a returning nameplate. Mitsubishi: a game-inspired Outlander and rally-linked builds
Night Seeker Concept
Mitsubishi’s Outlander PHEV Night Seeker Concept drew on Konami’s Metal Gear Solid series. Its appeal was visual and thematic: the game-inspired styling should not be mistaken for evidence of changes to the Outlander PHEV’s underlying mechanical specification. Triton rally car and Delica support vehicle
The display also connected road-going customization to competition preparation. Mitsubishi showed customized Tritons and a Delica D:5, an AXCR 2024 Triton rally car, and Delica D:5 and Delica Mini support cars. Mitsubishi said the rally Triton, based on the model that made its global debut in 2023, was modified to FIA Group T1 specifications. The company cited a widened tread and a rear-suspension change from leaf springs to a four-link rigid system with coil springs. Mitsubishi also said its Delica D:5 support vehicle had lift-up suspension, off-road tires, and an aluminum engine guard, and that it covered a course of more than 2,000 km over seven days at AXCR 2024. Lotus Emeya and Eletre: memorable finishes, not Tokyo premieres
Lotus brought two battery-electric vehicles with bespoke looks: an Emeya GT saloon in Blossom, a color inspired by a spring day, and an Eletre SUV in black and gold inspired by the JPS livery associated with the Lotus Type 79. They made for striking design displays and reflected Lotus’s electric direction, but the event report says these cars had already been shown at the 2024 Beijing motor show. Why the show’s customization culture matters
The headline concepts were only one part of the event. Toyota’s GR Yaris Aero Package prototype and GR Heritage Parts sat alongside vehicles fitted with aftermarket components. In one documented example, a Lexus LM build wore AME Shallen LX wheels and an ACC air-suspension kit. The event report described the wheels as a revival with updated details and said 20- and 21-inch sizes were planned at the time. These are examples of the range on display, not a guarantee that the parts fit other vehicles; compatibility depends on the specific car and component. That mix—factory prototypes, aftermarket parts, lifestyle concepts, and rally preparation—is what makes the salon’s reveals distinctive. The GR Yaris M Concept led on engineering novelty; Honda offered two clearly different steps toward road models; Mitsubishi joined customization to competition and pop culture; and Lotus supplied an electric design showcase with a history beyond the event.
