Which 2024 midsize SUV hybrids have the best EPA fuel economy?
Here, “midsize” means family-oriented, three-row crossovers rather than compact two-row SUVs. That practical comparison includes the Sorento, Highlander and Grand Highlander; the EPA Fuel Economy Guide uses its own SUV-size categories, which do not always match retail descriptions. The figures below are from the U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. EPA’s 2024 Fuel Economy Guide and are configuration-specific estimates.

How does AWD affect fuel economy?
In these ratings, choosing AWD can narrow the gap between models and configurations. The 2024 Sorento Hybrid AWD is rated at 34 mpg combined (36 city/33 highway), compared with 37 mpg combined for the FWD version. Grand Highlander Hybrid AWD is also listed at 34 mpg combined; the guide includes a 2.5-liter AWD configuration rated at 36 city/32 highway. Check the exact engine, trim and drivetrain against the vehicle you are considering rather than treating a model name as one single rating.

Where does the Sorento Plug-in Hybrid fit?
The 2024 Kia Sorento Plug-in Hybrid is rated at 79 MPGe for combined electric-and-gasoline operation and 34 mpg combined when running on gasoline. MPGe is not directly comparable to gasoline mpg: it expresses energy use by translating electricity to a gasoline-equivalent measure. The EPA explains that “the fuel economy of BEVs and PHEVs are measured in terms of miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent, or mpge.” For a PHEV, gasoline consumption also depends on how often it is charged and how much driving can be done using electricity. Which one should you choose?
- For the highest listed conventional-hybrid rating: The Sorento Hybrid FWD leads this comparison at 37 mpg combined.
- If you want a Grand Highlander: The FWD hybrid configuration at 36 mpg combined is the most efficient listed here; Limited FWD is rated at 34 mpg combined.
- If AWD is a priority: Compare the specific AWD ratings—35 mpg combined for the Highlander Hybrid AWD and 34 mpg for the cited Sorento and Grand Highlander AWD configurations.
- If you can charge regularly: Consider the Sorento Plug-in Hybrid’s electric driving potential, but assess its 34-mpg gasoline rating separately from its 79-MPGe combined rating.
These figures are EPA estimates for model year 2024, not independent road-test results. Actual fuel economy varies with driving conditions and use.
