There is no evidence-based global winner among new Chinese cars: desirability depends on what is sold and supported where you live, and what you need from a vehicle. For an electric SUV, the BYD SEALION 7 has independent European safety evidence. The ZEEKR 7GT is a safety-assessed electric grand tourer in Europe. NIO’s ES8 and ES9 show the scale of China’s premium electric-SUV market, but their prices, battery-swap benefits and availability need to be checked locally.
Which new Chinese cars are worth considering?
These models stand out for different reasons, not because a single source has ranked them as the most desirable. The shortlist combines independent safety assessments with manufacturer specifications and company-reported market figures; those kinds of evidence answer different questions.
BYD SEALION 7: an electric SUV with European safety evidence
The SEALION 7 is a battery-electric SUV. Euro NCAP awarded the European model it tested five stars in its 2025 assessment and reported on occupant protection. That is useful evidence about the tested vehicle under the assessment’s conditions, not a verdict on reliability, repair costs or the ownership experience. BYD lists an 11 kW onboard AC charging specification on its European product page; specifications and available trims may vary by market. Check the exact local variant and that the rating applies to it. Euro NCAP’s SEALION 7 assessment provides the test details.
Best fit: A buyer considering an electric SUV in a country where BYD sells and supports the model. Local price, warranty, dealer and service access, and charging compatibility still matter. The 11 kW onboard AC figure does not by itself establish which home charger will suit a particular buyer.

ZEEKR 7GT: a safety-assessed electric grand tourer
Euro NCAP awarded the ZEEKR 7GT five stars under its 2026 protocols. The assessed car was a left-hand-drive Privilege AWD. Euro NCAP noted that many functions depend on the centre screen; in a roughly 2,000 km assessment drive in Spain and France, speed-limit information was identified correctly in around 79% of cases. These details belong alongside the rating when weighing the car, especially if screen-led controls are a concern.
Best fit: Someone seeking a premium electric touring body style who can access local servicing. Check whether the variant on sale matches the assessed trim, and whether its controls work for you. ZEEKR’s European model page gives range and performance figures by variant, so consult the live specification for the exact trim rather than assuming one figure applies to all versions: ZEEKR 7GT specifications. Euro NCAP’s test details are available in its 2026 assessment.

NIO ES8: a five-seat premium SUV for China-market context
NIO launched the five-seat ES8 in China on 9 July 2026. At launch, the company announced prices of RMB 382,800 for Executive Premium and RMB 422,800 for Executive Signature, as well as lower prices through its Battery as a Service arrangement. Those are China launch prices, not quotes for other countries; verify current terms and local availability directly. NIO reported that the third-generation ES8 reached 120,000 deliveries 275 days after launch and ranked first in specified large-SUV segments for six consecutive months. These are company-reported figures, not an independent desirability or quality ranking. See NIO’s launch announcement.
Best fit: A buyer evaluating China’s premium large-SUV market who can verify local sales, service, warranty and parts support. Outside China, do not treat its launch price or the availability of Battery as a Service as applicable without local confirmation.

NIO ES9: a large three-row SUV built around NIO’s ecosystem
NIO announced the ES9 on 27 May 2026 as a premium, three-row battery-electric SUV. The company claims a 900 V architecture, up to 620 km of range, 5C charging and a three-minute battery swap. These are manufacturer claims, not directly comparable independent road-test results. NIO also said it planned to add more than 1,000 Power Swap Stations during 2026, with a fifth-generation rollout beginning in Q3. A plan is not evidence of coverage near a particular driver: swapping is useful only if the network is accessible where the car will be used. See NIO’s ES9 announcement.
Best fit: Someone interested in a technology-rich, large electric SUV who can confirm that the vehicle and relevant swap or charging infrastructure are actually available to them.

How to decide which one suits you
Use these checks before treating any model as a real purchase candidate:
- Confirm local availability and support. Is the exact model and variant on sale in your country? Check for accessible dealers, trained technicians, parts and software support.
- Compare the real local cost. Use local transaction prices, taxes, incentives, insurance and warranty terms. A China-market launch price is not a foreign-market quote.
- Match the powertrain to your routine. These four shortlisted models are battery-electric. Compare charging access and the particular vehicle’s charging capability; count battery swapping as a practical benefit only if a suitable network is available to you.
- Read safety results by variant and protocol. Identify the market, model year, trim and assessment protocol. A star rating is valuable evidence, but it does not establish reliability, repairability or local ownership support.
- Choose for space and use, not size alone. Compare seating, cargo needs, body style and daily routes. A large premium SUV may be a poor fit for city driving or a tight budget.
- Separate independent tests from company claims. Safety-assessment findings, manufacturer specifications and company-reported sales figures should not be treated as interchangeable proof.
What the sales figures can—and cannot—tell you
Geely reported that its brands sold 1.24 million New Energy vehicles in 2025 and that ZEEKR sales exceeded 220,000. It also named the 007 GT, 009 Grand and 9X among ZEEKR launches that year. These company-reported figures show the breadth of Geely’s activity; sales volume and a launch list do not independently establish quality or desirability. Geely’s 2025 sales report gives its figures and context.
