The Morning Midas was a China-to-Mexico vehicle carrier, not an EV-only ship. It was carrying 3,048 vehicles—including 70 fully electric cars and 681 hybrids—when smoke was reported from a vehicle deck on June 3, 2025. The 22-person crew abandoned the vessel safely, but the fire continued during salvage operations and the ship sank on June 23 in international waters southwest of Alaska.
Authorities did not publicly establish that an electric vehicle or battery caused the fire.

What happened to the Morning Midas?
The Morning Midas, a 600-foot pure car and truck carrier managed by London-based Zodiac Maritime, caught fire in the Pacific after departing China for Mexico. Smoke was first reported on June 3, 2025, from a vehicle deck carrying electric and hybrid vehicles. The 22-person crew abandoned the ship and was rescued without reported injuries.
The fire left the vessel disabled while salvage teams attempted to assess, tow and fight the blaze. On June 23, the Morning Midas capsized and sank by the stern in international waters roughly 450 miles southwest of Adak, Alaska. Authorities have not publicly established that an electric vehicle or its battery caused the fire.

How many EVs were aboard?
The Morning Midas carried 3,048 vehicles. The more precise cargo figures reported by the Coast Guard were:
- 70 fully electric vehicles
- 681 hybrid vehicles
- 2,297 other vehicles
That is why early reports describing the ship as carrying approximately 3,000 vehicles and roughly 800 electric or hybrid vehicles were broad approximations. The ship was not an EV-only carrier; it was a conventional pure car and truck carrier transporting a mixed vehicle cargo.
The vessel also reportedly carried approximately 350 metric tons of marine gas oil and 1,530 metric tons of very low sulfur fuel oil. Those fuel reserves created an additional pollution concern after the ship became disabled and later sank.
Did an electric vehicle cause the fire?
That has not been established. The confirmed fact is that smoke was first observed on or near a vehicle deck carrying EVs and hybrids. That identifies the location of the first reported smoke, not the ignition source.
The available public reporting did not identify a particular vehicle, battery, component or operational failure as the cause. It also did not provide a final public casualty-investigation finding that an EV battery started the blaze.

Battery fires are nevertheless a relevant safety issue. A damaged or overheated lithium-ion battery can enter thermal runaway, a self-heating failure that may produce intense heat, hazardous gases and reignition risk. Those characteristics can make cooling and suppression more difficult. But that general technical risk cannot be used to conclude that a battery caused this specific fire.
The defensible summary is narrower: the fire began or was first noticed on a deck carrying a mixed cargo that included EVs and hybrids; the crew’s emergency response could not control it; and the public evidence does not establish what ignited the fire.

The crew activated the Morning Midas’s emergency firefighting systems after smoke was detected, but the situation continued to escalate. With the fire uncontrolled, all 22 crew members evacuated to a lifeboat and were picked up by the nearby Cosco Hellas.
The rescue was coordinated with U.S. Coast Guard support, including surface vessels and aircraft operating near Alaska. The cited updates reported no injuries among the crew, responders or salvage personnel.
Once the crew had left, the ship remained disabled and drifting while salvage companies mobilized. Fighting a fire aboard a large vehicle carrier is particularly difficult because vehicles are packed across enclosed decks, access can be restricted, and heat and smoke can spread through the cargo spaces. If lithium-ion batteries are involved, hidden damage and later reignition can add to the challenge—but the public record does not say how many, if any, of the vehicles were actively burning.

How the Morning Midas sank
The first Resolve Marine salvage team reached the ship on June 9. Salvage and towing vessels were sent to support assessment, firefighting and stabilization efforts. The Morning Midas remained afloat for weeks after the crew evacuation, but fire damage left the vessel vulnerable.
On June 23, the ship developed a rapidly increasing list to port, then capsized and sank by the stern. Zodiac Maritime attributed the loss to fire damage compounded by heavy weather and water ingress. Those details are not contradictory: the fire could have weakened or damaged the vessel, while bad weather, increasing list and incoming water contributed to the final loss.
The wreck settled in approximately 16,400 feet, or 5,000 meters, of water. The sinking occurred in international waters, not close to the U.S. coast. NOAA placed the last known position approximately 160 nautical miles outside the U.S. exclusive economic zone, around 360 nautical miles from the nearest land and more than six nautical miles from the nearest undersea cable.
Was there an oil spill?
At the conclusion of the Coast Guard’s fire response, authorities reported no visible pollution. Salvage vessels remained in the area with pollution-response equipment, and an additional oil-spill-response vessel was dispatched as a precaution.
NOAA listed approximately 650,000 gallons of oil at risk of spilling, based on the ship’s reported fuel quantities. “No visible pollution” described conditions observed at that stage; it does not prove that no environmental impact occurred or that no later release was possible.

- A fun and challenging puzzle to replicate the USS Constitution.
- Very easy to assemble, no scissors, glue or tape required.
- Number of pieces: 193

The wreck’s depth and location complicate inspection and recovery. The ship sank thousands of feet below the surface, outside the U.S. exclusive economic zone, leaving pollution monitoring and any future salvage work dependent on specialized marine-response operations.
What this means for EV transport by ship
The Morning Midas is part of a broader series of vehicle-carrier fires, including the Felicity Ace fire and sinking in 2022 and the Fremantle Highway fire in 2023. Those incidents have increased scrutiny of vehicle-deck fire detection, firefighting tactics, crew training, cargo spacing and the transport of battery-powered vehicles.
However, this casualty should not be presented as proof that EVs are inherently more likely than gasoline-powered vehicles to start fires. Vehicle-carrier fires can have multiple possible ignition sources, and the public information in this case does not identify one.
The more useful safety question is how a ship handles a fire once it begins. A lithium-ion battery that has been damaged by impact, heat or fire may continue producing heat after visible flames are suppressed and may reignite. That can require prolonged cooling and monitoring. On a densely loaded car carrier, responders must also contend with limited access, smoke, structural damage and the possibility of fire spreading between vehicles.

- The exact ignition source.
- Whether a specific EV, hybrid or conventional vehicle was the first to catch fire.
- The make, model or battery involved, if any battery was involved in ignition.
- The complete vehicle manifest and the precise distribution of vehicles across the decks.
- A final public casualty-investigation conclusion explaining the fire’s cause.
Until investigators publish more evidence, headlines should distinguish between the location where smoke was first observed and the cause of the fire. The first is known; the second was not publicly resolved in the reporting available for this incident.
