Sodium-ion batteries are becoming a real option for budget electric vehicles, but the seven automakers connected to the technology are not equally committed or equally close to retail sales. Changan has the clearest production milestone after announcing a CATL-powered sodium-ion passenger vehicle in February 2026. JAC and JMEV have earlier small-car precedents; Chery and GAC/Aion are linked to reported CATL deployment plans; BYD is exploring possible city-car applications; and Volkswagen’s connection runs indirectly through JAC.
The chemistry’s appeal is lower material-supply exposure, strong cold-weather potential, safety, and useful power performance. Its drawback is lower energy density than leading lithium-ion designs, which is why sodium-ion is currently most convincing in affordable urban EVs rather than long-range SUVs.

The short answer: sodium-ion is becoming a budget-EV strategy, not a lithium-ion replacement
Seven automakers have credible links to sodium-ion electric vehicles, but they are not all at the same stage. Changan is the clearest mainstream production milestone: on February 5, 2026, Changan and CATL announced a mass-production passenger vehicle using CATL’s Naxtra sodium-ion battery, with reported energy density of up to 175 Wh/kg.

JAC and JMEV provide earlier small-car demonstrations or production precedents. Chery and GAC/Aion are tied to reported CATL deployment plans, while BYD is associated with possible sodium-ion applications for affordable city cars. Volkswagen’s connection is more indirect, through its strategic relationship with JAC. None of those seven bets should be treated as proof that the automaker already sells a sodium-ion vehicle in every market.

The reason for the interest is straightforward: sodium-ion batteries could reduce exposure to lithium and other constrained battery materials, perform well in cold conditions, and offer useful safety and power characteristics. The compromise is lower energy density than the best lithium-ion alternatives. That makes sodium-ion most attractive for small city cars, entry-level hatchbacks, light commercial vehicles, and fleets where low cost and adequate urban range matter more than maximum range or minimum weight.
Status in this article is based on announcements and reporting available through February 2026. “Production” means a reported or formally announced vehicle program; it does not automatically mean the vehicle is available to private buyers outside China.
How strong is each automaker’s sodium-ion bet?
| Automaker | Evidence level | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Changan | Formal production announcement | CATL and Changan announced a mass-production passenger vehicle using Naxtra. |
| JAC Motors | Public test vehicle and development program | JAC demonstrated a sodium-ion test car and targeted small A00-class EVs. |
| JMEV | Reported small-car production | The EV3 Youth Edition has been associated with a Farasis sodium-ion pack. |
| Chery | Early supplier partnership | CATL identified Chery as its first selected passenger-vehicle automaker for mass-produced sodium-ion batteries. |
| GAC/Aion | Reported follow-on deployment | Industry reporting has identified GAC or Aion as a likely CATL sodium-ion adopter. |
| BYD | Reported exploration | BYD is linked to possible sodium-ion use in affordable city cars, but no sodium-ion Seagull specification is confirmed here. |
| Volkswagen | Indirect strategic exposure | Volkswagen’s JAC relationship connects it to an automaker involved in early sodium-ion development; no Volkswagen-branded sodium-ion car is established. |
CATL is not included in the seven because it is the battery supplier, not an automaker. Its Naxtra program is nevertheless central to the story: CATL is providing much of the industrial push that could move sodium-ion from demonstrations into inexpensive passenger vehicles.
1. BYD: a possible dual-chemistry strategy for city cars
BYD is a credible candidate because it controls much of the electric-vehicle supply chain, including batteries, drivetrains, and vehicles. That vertical integration gives it more freedom than many automakers to test a different cell chemistry and match it to a specific vehicle.
Reporting has linked BYD’s small-car lineup, including the Seagull, to possible sodium-ion applications. The defensible description, however, is that BYD is exploring sodium-ion options for affordable city cars. It is not established by the available evidence that a sodium-ion Seagull is already on sale or that every Seagull uses sodium-ion cells.
BYD’s public vehicle materials continue to emphasize its lithium-iron-phosphate Blade Battery. A plausible industry strategy would be to use sodium-ion in shorter-range, lower-cost urban models and LFP in vehicles needing more energy density or longer range. That is an inference from BYD’s integrated business and the broader chemistry trend—not a confirmed BYD product roadmap.
For BYD, sodium-ion would therefore be a cost-control tool rather than a wholesale replacement for LFP. A small city car can tolerate a heavier or larger battery more easily than a long-range SUV because its expected driving range is lower and its packaging constraints are less demanding.

Chery has one of the clearest early links to CATL’s passenger-vehicle sodium-ion plan. Reporting on CATL’s deployment strategy identified Chery as the first automaker selected to install CATL’s mass-produced sodium-ion batteries in passenger vehicles.
That makes Chery an important commercialization partner, but not necessarily an automaker with a sodium-ion model already available for general retail purchase. Chery’s own technology and new-energy-vehicle materials show an expanding battery and EV portfolio, yet the available information does not establish a consumer model, battery size, trim, price, or market for a Chery sodium-ion car.

The significance of Chery’s involvement is industrial. If a major Chinese automaker integrates CATL’s cells into a production passenger vehicle, it provides a route for sodium-ion to be validated under real warranty, manufacturing, and fleet-use conditions. Those are more meaningful tests of the chemistry’s commercial value than a laboratory cell or one-off prototype.
3. JAC Motors: one of the earliest real vehicle demonstrations
JAC is among the strongest examples of an automaker moving beyond general interest. On February 28, 2023, JAC publicly presented a sodium-ion battery test vehicle and said it was evaluating the chemistry for small A00-class electric cars using its Sehol/JAC small-car platform.
JAC highlighted several potential benefits: lower material-cost exposure, safety, fast charging, and operation across a broad temperature range. The company’s stated direction was to begin with compact vehicles and potentially expand to larger models later.
That history matters, but it needs a precise qualification. The announcement documents a test vehicle and commercialization intent; it does not prove that every current JAC or Yiwei model uses sodium-ion batteries or that the vehicles are sold globally. JAC’s current displayed Yiwei 3 configurations, for example, list LFP batteries. A brand’s sodium-ion development program and a particular model’s production battery are not interchangeable facts.
JAC’s likely advantage is that small urban vehicles are the easiest place to absorb sodium-ion’s energy-density penalty. A modest battery can deliver useful city range without making the vehicle excessively large or expensive.
4. Changan: the clearest mainstream production milestone
Changan is currently the strongest example of sodium-ion reaching a mainstream passenger-car production program. On February 5, 2026, CATL and Changan announced what they described as the world’s first mass-production passenger vehicle equipped with sodium-ion batteries.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe vehicle uses CATL’s Naxtra chemistry, for which CATL has reported energy density of up to 175 Wh/kg. That figure is important because energy density is sodium-ion’s central weakness. A higher figure means less battery mass or volume is needed for a given amount of stored energy. At the same time, the number should not be treated as a universal comparison: cell-versus-pack measurements, usable capacity, thermal hardware, and vehicle design all affect an apples-to-apples comparison.
Changan’s announcement is a milestone, but it does not answer every buyer question. The exact model name, trim availability, price, production volume, warranty terms, and geographic distribution should be checked separately. A production announcement does not necessarily mean that a sodium-ion Changan is available through every dealer or export market.
Strategically, Changan illustrates the most likely first use case: a passenger vehicle with a moderate range requirement and enough battery packaging space to make sodium-ion’s lower energy density acceptable. The first successful applications are more likely to be practical urban cars than premium long-range vehicles.

5. JMEV: an early production route through a micro-EV
JMEV’s EV3 Youth Edition has been reported as a small production electric vehicle using a sodium-ion battery pack supplied by Farasis Energy. Reported specifications include a pack of approximately 21.4 kWh and a claimed CLTC range of around 251 km.
Those figures describe a vehicle designed around sodium-ion’s strengths and limitations. A roughly 21-kWh pack is appropriate for a lightweight urban EV, where buyers may prioritize a low purchase price, easy maneuverability, and sufficient daily range over highway capability.
The range figure is a CLTC claim, not an EPA rating. Chinese CLTC results should not be compared directly with U.S. EPA range because the test procedures and conditions differ. Real-world range will also vary with speed, temperature, heating or air-conditioning use, payload, and battery reserve.
JMEV is also relevant because of Renault Group’s corporate connection. Renault owns a 50% stake in JMEV through its electric-vehicle joint venture with Jiangling Motors Corporation Group. That gives Renault exposure to a Chinese joint venture associated with sodium-ion production, but it does not establish that Renault-branded European EVs use sodium-ion batteries.
6. GAC and Aion: a reported follow-on deployment
Industry reporting has identified GAC or its Aion brand as a likely follow-on adopter of CATL sodium-ion batteries for passenger vehicles. This would fit the technology’s intended market: GAC’s broad EV portfolio includes vehicles where price, urban usability, and battery supply costs can matter more than achieving the longest possible range.
Recommended Free Tools
The evidence is less mature than Changan’s formal launch announcement. Available reports describe an expected or planned deployment rather than a confirmed retail model with a published battery specification. Until GAC or Aion names a vehicle and provides its battery chemistry, pack size, range standard, pricing, and sales markets, the company should be described as part of the reported pipeline—not as a completed sodium-ion production success.
That distinction is especially important in battery coverage. Automakers often test multiple chemistries at the same time, and a supplier partnership may cover future vehicles without determining the battery in every current model.
7. Volkswagen: exposure through JAC, not a confirmed Volkswagen sodium-ion car
Volkswagen’s sodium-ion connection is indirect. Volkswagen has a substantial strategic relationship with JAC, including the JAC Volkswagen/Volkswagen Anhui electric-vehicle joint venture, an increased ownership and management role, and investment in Chinese battery capabilities. Separate reporting places JAC among the automakers involved in early sodium-ion development.
That makes Volkswagen a qualified inclusion in this list, but not in the same category as Changan. The available evidence does not establish a Volkswagen-branded sodium-ion vehicle in production. The more accurate interpretation is that Volkswagen has exposure to JAC and to China’s low-cost EV ecosystem, where sodium-ion may become useful for inexpensive urban vehicles.

Whether that exposure produces a Volkswagen-badged sodium-ion car is a separate question. Joint-venture technology does not automatically migrate into every partner’s global lineup, particularly when vehicle platforms, regulations, battery sourcing, and market positioning differ by region.

Potentially lower dependence on constrained materials
Sodium is more abundant than lithium. Depending on the precise cathode, anode, electrolyte, and manufacturing process, sodium-ion batteries may reduce exposure to lithium, nickel, and cobalt supply constraints. That can be valuable for automakers trying to control costs and localize supply chains.
It does not mean every sodium-ion battery is automatically free of scarce or expensive materials, nor does it guarantee a cheaper vehicle. Cell chemistry is only one part of the final price. Manufacturing scale, factory utilization, pack design, logistics, warranty reserves, and the amount of capacity needed to compensate for lower energy density all matter.
Better cold-weather potential
Sodium-ion technology is attractive partly because it can maintain useful performance across a broad temperature range. Cold-weather behavior is a practical concern for EV owners: low temperatures can reduce available power, charging speed, and driving range in any battery-powered vehicle.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The exact advantage depends on the cell design and the vehicle’s thermal-management system. “Sodium-ion performs better in the cold” should not be read as “cold has no effect.” Buyers still need the vehicle’s tested winter range and charging limits, especially in regions with sustained subfreezing temperatures.
Safety and power characteristics
CATL and JAC have emphasized safety and fast-charging potential as advantages of sodium-ion cells. Those characteristics could help small EVs that need predictable daily operation and short charging stops.
Battery safety is never determined by chemistry alone. Pack structure, separators, thermal management, software controls, manufacturing quality, crash protection, and charging behavior all contribute. Sodium-ion may improve some safety margins, but it is not an exemption from normal EV safety requirements.
The unavoidable energy-density trade-off
The central disadvantage is that a sodium-ion pack generally needs more mass or volume to store the same energy as a higher-density lithium-ion pack. That creates three possible compromises: less range for the same vehicle size, a larger battery for the same range, or a heavier vehicle.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
In a small city car, those compromises may be acceptable. In a large SUV or a long-distance vehicle, they can reduce efficiency, cabin or cargo flexibility, and highway range. This is why sodium-ion is best understood as a use-case chemistry: the right battery depends on what the vehicle is expected to do.

What the production timeline shows
- February 28, 2023: JAC presented a sodium-ion test vehicle and identified small A00-class EVs as an initial target.
- Late 2023 or early 2024: The JMEV EV3 Youth Edition was reported in production with a Farasis sodium-ion pack.
- April 21, 2025: CATL unveiled Naxtra and described it as the world’s first mass-produced sodium-ion battery.
- February 5, 2026: CATL and Changan announced a mass-production passenger vehicle using sodium-ion batteries.
- During 2026: GAC/Aion and JAC were reported as likely follow-on adopters of CATL sodium-ion passenger batteries, although model-level retail details remained less firmly documented.
The chronology prevents an easy but inaccurate headline. Changan is the most important mainstream production milestone, but it is not the first sodium-ion EV ever demonstrated or associated with production. JAC’s test vehicle and JMEV’s reported small-car production came earlier.
What this means for EV buyers
For most shoppers, the chemistry name is less important than the complete vehicle specification. If a sodium-ion EV reaches your market, compare:
- Usable battery capacity, not only the headline pack size.
- Range under the relevant test standard. CLTC, WLTP, and EPA figures are not directly interchangeable.
- Winter range and cold-weather charging limits.
- DC fast-charging performance across the battery’s state-of-charge range.
- Warranty coverage and battery-health provisions.
- Vehicle weight, cargo space, and charging connector.
- Actual market availability. A Chinese production announcement does not establish U.S. or European sales.
There is no reason to assume that a sodium-ion vehicle requires a special consumer charger solely because of its chemistry. Charging hardware and connector compatibility are vehicle-specific. The owner should follow the model’s published charging requirements rather than shop for a product labeled “sodium-ion charger.”

“Betting big” compresses several very different kinds of evidence. The seven automakers can be divided into four groups:
- Production announcement: Changan.
- Earlier test or reported production precedent: JAC and JMEV.
- Reported upcoming or supplier-linked deployment: Chery and GAC/Aion.
- Reported exploration or indirect strategic exposure: BYD and Volkswagen.
That is why it would be inaccurate to say all seven currently sell sodium-ion passenger EVs. It would also be premature to claim that sodium-ion will replace LFP or other lithium-ion chemistries across the market. The more defensible conclusion is that sodium-ion is becoming a complementary option for affordable EVs, particularly where urban range, low-temperature performance, material availability, and purchase price are more important than maximum energy density.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are sodium-ion batteries better than lithium-ion batteries?
No. Sodium-ion batteries are better suited to some applications, especially small city cars and fleets, but their lower energy density makes them less attractive for long-range vehicles. LFP and other lithium-ion chemistries remain important where range, weight, and compact battery packaging matter most.
Can I buy a sodium-ion EV in the United States?
Not based on the evidence covered here. Changan and CATL announced a mass-production sodium-ion passenger vehicle, while JAC and JMEV have earlier test or reported production examples. BYD, GAC/Aion, and Volkswagen are linked to exploration, pipeline plans, or indirect exposure rather than a confirmed globally available sodium-ion model.
Do sodium-ion EVs work better in cold weather?
Potentially, but the benefit depends on the exact cell and vehicle thermal-management system. Sodium-ion is being promoted for useful low-temperature performance, yet cold weather can still reduce EV range and charging performance. The model’s winter testing and charging specifications matter more than the chemistry label alone.
Will sodium-ion make electric cars cheaper?
Not necessarily. Sodium is more abundant than lithium and may reduce exposure to some constrained materials, but retail savings depend on production scale, pack design, manufacturing costs, warranty requirements, and how much extra capacity is needed to offset lower energy density.
Can CLTC sodium-ion range figures be compared with EPA range?
Do not compare them directly without checking the test standard. The JMEV EV3 Youth Edition’s reported range is a CLTC claim, while EPA and WLTP use different procedures. Real-world range also changes with speed, temperature, heating, air conditioning, payload, and driving style.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Sodium-ion batteries are crossing from demonstrations into selected low-cost electric vehicles, with Changan’s CATL-powered production announcement representing the clearest mainstream milestone as of February 2026. JAC and JMEV show that small-car applications came earlier, while Chery and GAC/Aion appear to be part of the next deployment wave.
Expect sodium-ion to supplement—not replace—lithium-ion. It is most compelling in small urban EVs and fleets that can accept shorter range or a heavier pack. For buyers outside China, the technology remains a development and market-availability story until automakers publish specific models, prices, warranties, and regional sales plans.
