The short answer
Garmin is the better default for most U.S. drivers who specifically want a standalone car sat nav. The current Garmin DriveSmart 76 is an identifiable 7-inch device with North American maps, wireless updates, voice assistance, Bluetooth hands-free calling, driver alerts and smartphone-linked traffic and other live services. Garmin lists it at $299.99 on its U.S. product page, although price and stock can change.
TomTom is the stronger fit for many European drivers and for anyone who prioritises traffic information, route visualisation, lane guidance or low-emission-zone avoidance. The current TomTom GO Navigator 2nd generation offers 6-inch and 7-inch versions, included TomTom Traffic, monthly European map updates, Wi-Fi updating, RouteBar, moving-lane guidance and low-emission-zone avoidance.
That is a geography- and use-case-based recommendation, not proof that one brand is always more accurate. Traffic results depend on region, connectivity, subscriptions, map data, device generation and the type of route. The best independent comparison located for this subject is an older 2021 Auto Express group test, so it is useful context rather than a definitive test of the latest Garmin and TomTom models.

Where you live matters more than the badge
The most important distinction is not the logo but whether the model you want is actively supported and sold for your region.
Garmin maintains an active U.S. automotive category covering car navigators, RV navigators, dash cams and backup cameras. The DriveSmart 76’s listed North American map coverage includes the United States, Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands and the Bahamas. That makes it a relatively straightforward starting point for a U.S. buyer who wants dedicated hardware.
Recommended Free Tools
TomTom’s U.S. navigation page currently gives prominent space to its driving app, GO Expert truck-and-car app, map services, speed-camera services and in-dash navigation. That does not prove that TomTom hardware cannot be bought in the United States, but it does make the regional buying picture less clear than Garmin’s. By contrast, TomTom’s European pages present the GO Navigator and GO Superior as clear current consumer-hardware options.
Before comparing prices, check the manufacturer’s storefront for your country and confirm all three of these details:
- Whether the exact model is sold in your market.
- Which countries and territories its preloaded maps cover.
- Whether the traffic, speed-camera and map-update services advertised on the product page apply in your region.
Maps and updates: neither brand means “free forever” for everything
Garmin
The DriveSmart 76 comes with preloaded street maps and North American map updates. Garmin supports wireless updating on this model, so routine map installation does not require connecting the navigator to a computer. Garmin’s support material also lists a Europe map version, 2027.20, for compatible DriveSmart 76 devices as of June 24, 2026. That illustrates why the exact device, region and compatible map version matter more than a general claim that Garmin has “better maps.”
If you are importing a Garmin or travelling across continents, do not assume that a North American unit automatically includes the same European coverage or update entitlement as a European configuration. Verify the map region before purchase.

TomTom’s current GO Navigator 2nd generation page promises European map updates at no extra cost, delivered monthly and installed over Wi-Fi. For a driver travelling regularly through European countries, that is a compelling ownership advantage: the update process is built into the device and the update cadence is clearly stated.
TomTom’s wider support policy is more complicated. According to its update-options guidance, some devices include map updates for the life of the product, while other map-update services are paid. Older devices and differently configured models may also require a TomTom account and a computer for updates. Therefore, apply the current GO Navigator promise only to the current GO Navigator configuration; do not extend it automatically to every TomTom ever sold.

Traffic: TomTom has the clearer included-service proposition, but not a guaranteed win
Traffic is one of TomTom’s traditional strengths, and the current GO Navigator includes a TomTom Traffic subscription. TomTom says the service uses real-time information from millions of drivers and provides information about the cause and expected duration of congestion. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent proof that TomTom will always find a jam sooner or select the fastest diversion.
The DriveSmart 76 receives live traffic and weather when paired with a compatible smartphone running the Garmin Drive app. Garmin also supports separate traffic-receiver arrangements for certain models and packages. The practical result depends on the exact unit, cable, power connection, phone, subscription and country. A Garmin buyer should not assume that every box provides the same traffic experience without a phone.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The older independent evidence is mixed. In Auto Express’s 2021 group test, TomTom traffic was reported as more accurate than Garmin on one smaller Garmin model, and TomTom’s alternative-route handling performed strongly in that comparison. The test also praised Garmin traffic on another model while noting that Garmin missed some jams TomTom detected. It tested older hardware, including the Garmin DriveSmart 65 and TomTom GO Discover, so the result should be treated as historical direction rather than a current DriveSmart 76-versus-GO Navigator verdict.
Choose TomTom if traffic is your deciding feature and you want it included in the dedicated device. Choose Garmin if you are comfortable pairing the navigator with your phone or have confirmed that the particular Garmin package includes the traffic arrangement you want.
Routing and the view on screen
TomTom’s current GO Navigator and GO Superior put more emphasis on showing the route context. RouteBar gives a visual summary of what is ahead, while enhanced visual cues and moving-lane guidance are intended to make exits, turns and lane changes easier to anticipate. This is especially useful on unfamiliar motorways and complex interchanges, where seeing the next manoeuvres in relation to the route can be more helpful than a simple turn arrow.
TomTom also highlights low-emission-zone avoidance. That matters to drivers visiting European cities where a route through a restricted zone can create a charge, penalty or access problem. Check the local rules separately: a navigation setting can help avoid a zone, but it is not a substitute for confirming the current legal restrictions, vehicle exemptions or registration requirements.
Garmin’s approach is broader. The DriveSmart 76 combines turn-by-turn navigation with driver alerts for sharp curves, speed changes, railway crossings, school zones and related road conditions. It also provides Up Ahead information, voice assistance, hands-free Bluetooth calling and smartphone notifications. Garmin notes that some red-light and speed-camera alerts are region-dependent, so those warnings should not be treated as universally available.
Which is easier to use?
In the 2021 Auto Express comparison, the tested Garmin DriveSmart 65 was easier for destination entry and voice activation than the tested TomTom GO Discover. Auto Express found TomTom address entry hit-and-miss on that particular model, even though TomTom performed well once navigation was running. That is useful evidence about the brands’ historical interface differences, but it is not a controlled review of the current DriveSmart 76 and GO Navigator 2nd generation.

- Preloaded with Topo Active maps with routable roads and trails for cycling and hiking
- Support for GPS and GLONASS satellite systems allows for tracking in more challenging environments than GPS alone
- 8 GB of internal memory for map downloads plus a micro SD card slot
The current hardware gives each brand a different convenience advantage:
- Garmin DriveSmart 76: a high-resolution 7-inch display, voice assistance, Bluetooth calling, wireless updates and phone-linked notifications and live services.
- TomTom GO Navigator: a choice of 6-inch or 7-inch screens, powerful speakers, Wi-Fi updating and a magnetic mount.
- TomTom GO Superior: the same broad visual-guidance approach with worldwide map coverage, voice control and additional live-service features on the premium model.
The better interface depends on how you enter destinations and interpret guidance. Drivers who regularly use voice commands or want phone notifications may prefer Garmin’s connected ecosystem. Drivers who want a large, highly visual picture of upcoming lanes, exits and delays may prefer TomTom.

Garmin’s DriveSmart 76 is not an offline-only box. With the Garmin Drive app and a compatible smartphone, it can provide live traffic, weather, notifications and fuel-price information, alongside hands-free calling. This is convenient if your phone is normally in the car, but it adds a dependency: the phone must be compatible, connected and able to provide the required data connection.
The TomTom GO Superior is the premium alternative for buyers who want more services built around the navigator. TomTom promotes worldwide maps, voice control, live fuel pricing, parking, weather and EV-charging information, with two-year trials for several services on the current configuration. Confirm the exact included trial periods, countries and renewal costs before buying, because these entitlements are model- and region-specific.
For an electric-car driver, TomTom’s EV-charging information may be more relevant than Garmin’s broader phone integration. For a conventional-car driver who wants fuel prices, weather and notifications, either ecosystem can be useful—but only if the relevant live services work in the country where the device will be used.
Price and total ownership cost
Garmin’s U.S. product page lists the DriveSmart 76 at $299.99. Treat that as a current listing for that U.S. product page, not a permanent international price. Currency, retailer discounts, stock and included traffic hardware can all change the comparison.
TomTom’s current European pages position the GO Navigator 2nd generation below the GO Superior. The two models have different screen sizes, map coverage and service entitlements, so comparing only the purchase price can be misleading. A cheaper device may include fewer live-service trials or a narrower map region; a more expensive model may be worthwhile if worldwide maps, voice control or EV and parking information are important to you.
Ask these questions before checkout:
- Are the maps for the countries you actually drive in included?
- Are map updates included for the life of this exact device, or only for a stated period?
- Is traffic included, phone-dependent or supplied through a separate receiver and cable?
- Which speed-camera, fuel, weather, parking or EV services expire, and what happens afterward?
- Will the mount and power cable suit your dashboard and vehicle?
The phrase lifetime updates should never be interpreted as “every service remains free forever.” Map updates, traffic, speed-camera data and other connected features can have separate terms.

Best choice by driver type
For most U.S. standalone-device buyers: Garmin DriveSmart 76
The Garmin DriveSmart 76 is the safest general recommendation when the buyer is in the United States, wants a dedicated 7-inch navigator and does not want to depend entirely on a phone screen. It has clearly identified North American coverage, wireless updates, voice assistance, driver alerts, Bluetooth and a mature U.S. automotive product range. Check the current price, stock and traffic arrangement before ordering.
It is also a sensible choice if you may later want to add selected Garmin automotive accessories. Garmin’s automotive range identifies compatible backup-camera products such as the BC 50, but compatibility is not universal, so verify the exact navigator and camera combination before purchase.
For a European driver wanting current TomTom hardware: TomTom GO Navigator 2nd generation
The TomTom GO Navigator 2nd generation is the better fit for a European driver who wants included traffic, monthly European map updates, Wi-Fi installation and strong visual lane and route guidance. Its low-emission-zone avoidance is another practical advantage for city driving across Europe.
Choose between the 6-inch and 7-inch versions based on dashboard space and viewing distance, not simply screen size. A bigger display is easier to read, but it can obstruct more of the windscreen if mounted poorly.
For premium features and international travel: TomTom GO Superior
The TomTom GO Superior makes more sense when worldwide maps and expanded live information justify the higher price. It is aimed at buyers who value voice control, live fuel pricing, parking, weather and EV-charging information, as well as the broader map coverage. Confirm the regional version and the duration of each included service trial.
For phone-first drivers: compare software before buying hardware
If your car already has a good screen with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, a dedicated navigator may add little. Compare the TomTom driving app or GO Expert app with the navigation experience you already use in the vehicle. TomTom’s U.S. site currently foregrounds those software products, making this a particularly relevant option for U.S. drivers who do not need a separate screen.

For RVs, trucks and motorcycles: compare specialist products, not ordinary car units
A normal car navigator is not automatically suitable for a large RV, commercial truck or motorcycle. Garmin has separate RV, dēzl and Zūmo product families, while TomTom offers GO Expert and professional navigation categories. Specialist devices can account for vehicle dimensions, restrictions or motorcycle-specific routing in ways that ordinary car units cannot.
Historical comparisons suggest different strengths between Garmin’s Zūmo motorcycle range and TomTom Rider models, but the available research does not provide a current controlled test that supports declaring one specialist brand the universal winner. Compare the exact specialist models, mounting, weather protection, route restrictions, map coverage and traffic terms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical buying checklist
- Start with country and route type. A U.S. commuter, a European city driver and an international traveller may need different map packages.
- Decide whether traffic must work without a phone. This points more strongly toward the current TomTom GO Navigator, while Garmin DriveSmart live traffic generally involves the Garmin Drive app unless the particular package supports another receiver arrangement.
- Check restricted-zone support. European urban drivers should look for low-emission-zone avoidance and still verify the law locally.
- Check updates, not just the word “maps.” Confirm frequency, Wi-Fi or computer requirements, included duration and any renewal charge.
- Measure the mounting position. Current TomTom units offer magnetic mounting and dashboard-mounting support; replacement dashboard disks, USB-C chargers and cables are not automatically universal.
- Check connected-service compatibility. For Garmin, confirm the phone, Garmin Drive app, traffic method and region. For TomTom, confirm which service trials apply to the exact GO model.
- Buy from a seller with a clear return policy. GPS performance and traffic usefulness are difficult to judge until the device has been used on your regular roads.
Verdict
Choose Garmin if you are in the United States and want the clearest current standalone car-navigation recommendation, broad North American coverage, driver alerts, voice features and a strong connected-device ecosystem.

Choose TomTom if you are in Europe, want included traffic and monthly European map updates, or care most about route visualisation, moving-lane guidance and low-emission-zone avoidance. Choose the GO Superior when its worldwide maps and expanded live services are worth the premium.
Neither brand is objectively best for every driver. The exact regional model, traffic connection, update entitlement and route environment matter more than the badge on the case.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Garmin or TomTom better in the United States?
For most U.S. buyers who specifically want standalone hardware, Garmin is the easier recommendation. The DriveSmart 76 has clearly identified North American maps, wireless updates, voice assistance, driver alerts and smartphone-linked live services. TomTom may still be the better choice if traffic and route visualisation matter more, but check the availability and service terms for the exact U.S. model.
Does TomTom have better traffic than Garmin?
No. TomTom has a strong included-traffic proposition on the current GO Navigator, and an older Auto Express test found TomTom traffic and alternative-route handling stronger on some tested models. However, the test was from 2021 and used older hardware. Traffic performance varies by region, data connection, subscription, map version and route.
Do Garmin and TomTom provide free lifetime map updates?
Do not assume so. Garmin includes preloaded maps and updates on products such as the DriveSmart 76, while the current TomTom GO Navigator promises monthly European map updates over Wi-Fi. TomTom’s wider support policy says update entitlements vary by device, and some map or speed-camera services can require payment after the included period.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShould I buy a sat nav if my car already supports smartphone navigation?
Often, yes. If your car already has Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, compare the TomTom driving app or GO Expert app with your existing navigation setup before buying a separate device. Dedicated hardware remains useful when the vehicle lacks a suitable display, when you want a separate screen or when you prefer not to use your phone for navigation.
Are Garmin and TomTom car sat navs suitable for trucks, RVs and motorcycles?
Use the specialist product families. Garmin offers RV, dēzl and Zūmo lines, while TomTom offers GO Expert and professional navigation categories. These products may account for vehicle dimensions, truck restrictions, RV routing or motorcycle use. A normal car unit is not automatically suitable for a large vehicle or motorcycle.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Garmin is the better default for a U.S. standalone car sat nav, while TomTom is the better fit for many European buyers and for drivers who prioritise included traffic, visual route guidance and low-emission-zone avoidance. Compare the exact model and service terms before buying; neither brand guarantees universally better traffic or permanently free access to every connected feature.
