More Extended-Range EVs Are Coming: Models, Range Claims and Timing

Ford, Hyundai, Leapmotor and Karma have announced EREVs at different stages. Here is what their range claims mean—and what remains uncertain.

Several automakers have announced extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), but the plans are not at the same stage: some have a stated order or arrival window, while others remain future announcements without a launch date. Their headline range figures also are not directly comparable. A combined-range estimate is different from electric-only range, and neither tells you how often you will charge or how much fuel you will use.

What makes an EV “extended-range”?

In the architecture Leapmotor describes for its Hybrid EV, an electric motor alone propels the vehicle. A fuel-powered range extender generates electricity to recharge the battery; it is not mechanically connected to the wheels. That differs from conventional hybrids in which an engine can drive the wheels, and from plug-in hybrids that combine engine-driven and electric propulsion. This is Leapmotor’s description of its system, not a universal definition for every vehicle marketed as an EREV.

Ford describes its next-generation F-150 Lightning EREV in similar terms: electric motors propel the truck, while a generator extends range. In both cases, the key practical distinction is between the source of propulsion and the source of electricity when the battery needs replenishing.

Announced EREVs to watch

These announcements vary in timing, market detail and certainty. Automaker statements are plans or estimates, not confirmation that vehicles are on sale or being delivered in every market.

Model What the company has announced Range claim Timing and market status
Ford F-150 Lightning EREV Ford says the next-generation pickup will be propelled by electric motors and use a generator for range extension. It plans to assemble it at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn. More than 700 miles estimated by Ford; not an independently verified result. Ford’s 2025 announcement gave no launch date and said it would share more details later. The announcement concerns the United States.
Hyundai Santa Fe EREV Hyundai says it will be built at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama. More than 600 miles of total range expected by Hyundai. Hyundai’s 2026 investor-day announcement said arrival is expected in the first half of 2027. It did not specify an exact retail launch date or availability in other countries.
Leapmotor B10 Hybrid EV Leapmotor announced orders in selected European markets and a starting list price of €29,900. Preliminary company-reported homologation figures: 80 km WLTP electric range and up to 900 km combined range. Leapmotor also cites an 18.8 kWh battery. Leapmotor said orders open January 9, 2026, in selected European markets. The cited announcement does not establish availability elsewhere.
Karma Amaris Karma announced an EREV coupe; pricing was not announced in its cited statement. Not stated in the cited announcement. Karma’s March 20, 2025 announcement anticipated production in Q4 2026. That dated expectation is not confirmation that production or customer deliveries have begun.

Ford’s range figure is explicitly an estimate, Hyundai’s is an expectation, and Leapmotor’s electric-range homologation data is preliminary. Treat them as company claims, not results from a shared test. The figures also describe different things: Ford’s and Hyundai’s claims are total range, while Leapmotor separately reports electric-only and combined range.

What the wider market picture says—and does not say

The International Energy Agency’s 2025 outlook reported that more than 70% of the 40 EREV models available at the time were SUVs, MPVs or pickups. It also described an average electric range of about 120 km for EREVs in China in 2024, compared with around 85 km for a standard PHEV. Those are dated figures with specific geographic and time limits, not a current count or a forecast for every new model.

That outlook said four announced EREV models were due outside China by 2026, naming Scout and RAM for the United States and Changan for Europe. It also said two models, from Mazda and Leapmotor, were then available in Europe. These are the report’s forecast and market snapshot, not confirmation of current deliveries. Transport & Environment’s 2025 report likewise characterized Europe’s EREV plans as uncertain; its analysis should be read as a dated market assessment rather than a present-day sales tally.

Why total range is not the whole story

The IEA says longer electric range could reduce how often an EREV needs charging, allow more electric-only driving and lower reliance on liquid fuels. But environmental benefits depend heavily on how the vehicle is used. A long combined-range figure alone cannot show emissions or fuel savings: those depend on factors such as electric driving share, charging, electricity supply and fuel use. The cited sources do not establish a general emissions advantage over battery EVs.

For a buyer, the useful question is not simply “How far can it go?” but how the vehicle fits normal driving and charging. Compare the electric-only range with a typical week of trips; consider whether charging is available at home, work or along regular routes; and find out what happens on longer journeys once the battery’s usable charge is depleted. A vehicle’s class and intended use matter too: a pickup, SUV and coupe can serve different needs even if their advertised total ranges look similar.

How to read the claims before deciding

  • Separate electric-only from combined range. Electric-only range indicates how far the vehicle is claimed to travel before relying on its range extender. Combined range includes the energy available from both the battery and fuel.
  • Check the test basis. Leapmotor gives a preliminary WLTP electric-range figure. The cited Ford and Hyundai announcements describe estimates or expectations, not a common test result. Do not compare headline numbers as if they were measured under identical conditions.
  • Match range to your routine. Estimate how much of your normal driving could be electric, and whether practical charging access makes that possible.
  • Look beyond the headline for long trips. Ask for fuel-use information after the battery charge is depleted; total range does not answer how much liquid fuel a journey might require.
  • Verify the stage of the launch in your market. An announced vehicle, an order opening, a production target and customer deliveries are different milestones. Confirm current availability and final specifications with the automaker or a local retailer before making plans.
