The MONOWALKER Fatmate is a single-wheel hiking trailer pulled through a harness and adjustable handles—not a conventional backpack. Its wheel supports part of the load, while the hiker still guides and bears some weight. MONOWALKER lists a 50 kg payload, a 10 kg trailer weight and a 1.9 kg harness; those are manufacturer specifications, not results from an independent comparison.

What the MONOWALKER Fatmate is

MONOWALKER describes the Fatmate as an expedition cart for taking gear and food on foot, including trips away from roads and infrastructure. The user connects to it with a harness and handles, and its single wheel supports the rear of the load. That makes it a different proposition from a backpack: the load is not all carried on the hiker’s back, but the cart still needs to be controlled and may need to be lifted or maneuvered where rolling is not possible. MONOWALKER’s design page explains the intended setup.

Published Fatmate specifications

The following figures come from MONOWALKER’s product listing and FAQ. The pages do not state a publication year, so these should be read as manufacturer-published specifications rather than dated or independently verified measurements.

Specification Published value Source
Maximum payload 50 kg MONOWALKER product listing
Trailer weight 10 kg MONOWALKER product listing; MONOWALKER FAQ
Harness weight 1.9 kg MONOWALKER product listing; MONOWALKER FAQ

Puncture protection Tannus Armour 20×4 MONOWALKER product listing
Brake Mechanical disc brake with 180 mm rotor MONOWALKER product listing
Frame and luggage plate Aluminum frame components and carbon luggage plate MONOWALKER product listing
Folded length 110 cm MONOWALKER design page
Packed-cart dimensions and weight 110 × 60 × 45 cm; 15 kg including packaging material MONOWALKER FAQ

The 15 kg FAQ figure is the packed cart including packaging, not the listed 10 kg trailer weight. The design page says the Fatmate folds without tools; the 110 cm figure is a folded length, while the FAQ dimensions describe a packed-cart size.

  • Portable Design - Lightweight poles collapse for easy storage in a hiking pack or backpack and include a travel bag for transport on day hikes, backpacking trips, or long-distance treks.

How the load is shared—and what that claim means

MONOWALKER says the Fatmate’s geometry places half of the gear weight on the user’s hips and half on the rear wheel. For use with the optional rack, the company says the user carries 30% and the rack carries 70%. These are manufacturer claims; the cited pages do not provide independent measurements or a comparative test establishing how the split feels for different users, loads or terrain.

The mechanical disc brake is also described by MONOWALKER as usable as a drag brake on descents. This indicates the intended function, not proof that the trailer will provide suitable control on every slope or surface. Riders and hikers should consider the route and the load rather than treating a brake or wide tire as a guarantee of safe passage.

Terrain and route fit

The design page describes use on sand, snow, dirt roads and single trails, and highlights the 20 × 4-inch fat tire and brake. These are the manufacturer’s stated intended capabilities; the available product information does not establish independent performance across all trail conditions.

  • Surface: A wide tire is part of the design, but soft sand, snow, mud and loose ground can still change how much effort towing takes.
  • Trail shape: Narrow routes, sharp turns, rocks, steps and gates may make a cart harder to guide than a backpack.
  • Slopes: Descents require control of both the user and the trailer; assess whether the brake and route suit the loaded setup.
  • Cart-free sections: Consider how you will lift, carry or reposition the cart if the route stops being rollable.

Fatmate versus a backpack or other hiking cart

There is no independent head-to-head test in the available sources to establish a general winner between the Fatmate, a conventional backpack and a two-wheel hiking cart. The practical choice depends on the route, the amount and shape of gear, and whether shifting some load off the body is worth towing and handling a cart.

Option Load and movement What to weigh up
MONOWALKER Fatmate Single-wheel cart connected by harness and handles; MONOWALKER describes part of the load as supported by the wheel. Published folding length is 110 cm; route width, obstacles, slopes and cart-free sections matter. Performance and load-sharing claims are from the manufacturer.
Conventional backpack Load is carried on the person rather than supported by a cart wheel. Does not require towing a trailer, but this comparison does not establish which option is more comfortable or efficient for a particular hiker.
Two-wheel hiking cart Uses two wheels rather than the Fatmate’s single-wheel layout. The available sources provide no comparative specifications or test results for a specific two-wheel model.

Modularity, packing and compatibility

MONOWALKER describes a modular carrying system that includes the SL-X Carbon Packframe, LB XTR load bags and an optional rack. Its product listing names LB XTR 40 and LB XTR 80 bags. Confirm that any accessory fits the exact Fatmate configuration before buying; the cited pages do not establish compatibility with every bag, rack or replacement part sold elsewhere.

For maintenance, the listing identifies Tannus Armour 20×4 puncture protection and Shimano Type G04S-MX brake pads. Check the parts on the specific cart and confirm fit before ordering replacement components, because a product-family mention alone is not a guarantee of compatibility with every configuration.

Who should consider a hiking trailer?

The Fatmate may be worth considering if you need to move substantial gear on foot over routes where a cart can roll, and are comfortable towing and controlling a single-wheel trailer. It is less straightforward if your route includes frequent obstacles, very narrow passages, or long sections where the cart must be carried. Evaluate those constraints against your pack volume and the ability to travel without rolling support before choosing a system.

Price, availability, shipping terms, warranty details and replacement-part fit are not established by the cited specification pages in a way that should be treated as durable. Check the live MONOWALKER Fatmate listing for current terms.
