MOIA began passenger testing its autonomous Volkswagen ID. Buzz in Hamburg on July 15, 2026. The rides are part of the ALIKE mobility pilot, not an unrestricted commercial launch: selected residents accepted into a limited test group can book through the MOIA app, and a trained safety operator rides onboard.
Can you ride in MOIA’s self-driving ID. Buzz?
Yes, if you live in Hamburg and are accepted into MOIA’s test group. MOIA’s July 15, 2026 announcement said selected, preregistered residents could book rides in the electric ID. Buzz through the MOIA app. Rides were free during the pilot at launch, according to MOIA’s launch announcement.
This is a supervised test operation. “Autonomous” describes the vehicle technology being evaluated; it does not mean passengers are taking a fully driverless commercial service.
How to join the MOIA autonomous test group
- Join the waitlist: Use the MOIA app and follow its instructions to register interest in the autonomous test phase.
- Wait for acceptance: MOIA limits access to selected participants, and joining the waitlist does not guarantee an immediate invitation.
- Book in the app if admitted: Trips are booked on demand, subject to the live service area and availability. Advance reservations and group bookings are not available.
MOIA’s participant instructions say access may take time and availability is limited. At launch, MOIA said an option in the hvv switch app would follow soon; that announcement alone does not establish that the app currently supports these rides.

Where the autonomous MOIA shuttle operates
At launch, MOIA described service in parts of Winterhude, Barmbek, and Wandsbek. Pickups and drop-offs use designated virtual stops rather than any address a passenger chooses. The current map and operating hours are shown in the app and can change, so check there before planning a trip.
The service is ridepooling: passengers travelling in the same direction share a vehicle. MOIA’s participant page also warns that trips may involve delays or longer walks to stops and that the ID. Buzz has no luggage space.

Is there a safety driver onboard?
Yes. A trained safety operator accompanies the MOIA vehicle during the passenger test. MOIA’s testing and safety overview describes specially trained safety drivers in its test-phase autonomous vehicles. HOCHBAHN says a safety driver remains onboard through the ALIKE project period.
The passenger launch is therefore a public test of supervised autonomous operation in urban traffic—not evidence that MOIA has removed human oversight or demonstrated a particular safety-performance result.

What ALIKE is testing
Hamburg’s ALIKE project is examining how autonomous on-demand rides might complement public transport. HOCHBAHN leads the project with MOIA, HOLON, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and Hamburg’s transport authority. The city’s stated target is for autonomous on-demand shuttles and autonomous scheduled services to become part of public transport by 2035; that is an ambition, not a confirmed rollout date.
The project includes two distinct vehicle operations:

MOIA says operational experience is intended to help refine its technology and service and prepare for possible use in additional markets. That is the company’s stated goal, not evidence of a confirmed expansion or proof of commercial viability. The launch information does not provide independent passenger-safety results, trip counts, or measured performance statistics for this new passenger operation.
