Modified-car insurance is not a separate level of cover from comprehensive, third-party, fire and theft, or third-party-only insurance. It is the same underlying type of motor policy, but the insurer has assessed and recorded the car’s non-standard changes. A standard policy may accept a modification, charge more, exclude it, replace it with a standard part, or refuse the vehicle. You cannot assume that a modification is covered merely because the policy is comprehensive.
For a valid claim, list every change accurately, check how modified parts are valued and replaced, and keep confirmation on the policy schedule or statement of fact. This is especially important for inherited modifications, remapped engines, wheels, exhausts, suspension, bodywork, wraps and structural alterations.

What modified-car insurance actually changes
“Modified-car insurance” usually describes a policy whose underwriting has been based on declared changes to a vehicle. The liability and own-vehicle sections work in the familiar way: you choose third-party-only, third-party, fire and theft, or comprehensive cover, then the insurer applies its terms, exclusions, excesses and valuation method to the modified car.

The difference is the information used to assess the risk and the treatment of non-standard equipment. An insurer may agree to cover a modified car under its ordinary motor product, while another may require a specialist policy. A specialist label does not guarantee better cover, and an ordinary policy is not automatically inadequate. The schedule and policy wording control.

Which? summarises the principle this way: “With modified car insurance, you’ll get all the same benefits you would expect from a standard insurance policy. In addition, the modifications will also be insured.” That additional protection only applies to changes the insurer has accepted and to the limits and conditions written into the contract.
Side-by-side coverage
| Issue | Standard car insurance | Modified-car insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Third-party liability | Covers injury or property damage caused to other people, subject to the policy being valid. It does not repair your own car. | Uses the same liability basis, with the declared vehicle and modifications included in the underwriting. |
| Damage to your own car | Available only if the selected cover includes it. Non-standard parts may be excluded, capped, or replaced with standard parts if they were not declared. | Available according to the selected cover, with accepted modifications dealt with under the stated replacement, repair or valuation terms. |
| Fire and theft | Applies according to the policy, but an undisclosed modification may create a coverage dispute or affect settlement. | Applies to the accepted vehicle and modifications, subject to exclusions, security requirements and limits. |
| Write-off settlement | Usually follows the policy’s market-value or other stated valuation method. | Ask whether the settlement method recognises modification cost. An agreed-value policy pays the amount agreed in advance if the wording provides for it. |
| Undeclared changes | Can lead to a rejected claim, policy cancellation or voiding, depending on the facts and applicable consumer-insurance rules. | Disclosure is still essential. A specialist policy does not override exclusions or make an undeclared change acceptable. |
Third-party insurance is the legal minimum in the UK. It pays for injury or damage you cause to another person, vehicle, animal or property; it does not pay to repair your own vehicle. Choosing comprehensive cover changes that own-vehicle protection, not the duty to disclose modifications.
What counts as a modification?
Insurers can define “modification” more broadly than an enthusiast might. A useful working rule is that anything not fitted to the car when it left the manufacturer, or any change from the manufacturer’s specification, should be disclosed unless the insurer expressly says it is not material.
Performance and mechanical changes
- Engine swaps, turbochargers, superchargers and other power upgrades.
- ECU remaps, software tuning, intake systems and fuel-system changes.
- Aftermarket exhausts, catalytic-converter changes and noise-related alterations.
- Uprated brakes, altered brake bias and performance brake components.
- Lowered or raised suspension, coilovers, altered springs, dampers and anti-roll bars.
- Changes to transmission, differential, clutch or cooling systems.
An ECU remap can be material even when no part is visibly different. The Financial Ombudsman Service has published a case in which an undisclosed ECU remap and exhaust retuning supported an insurer’s decision to void the policy.
Exterior, wheels and appearance
- Body kits, spoilers, splitters, wings, widened arches and non-standard bumpers.
- Alloy wheels or tyres that differ in size, offset, width or specification.
- Resprays, two-tone paint, vinyl wraps, colour changes and significant graphics.
- Window tints, lighting changes, roof racks, tow bars and non-standard body accessories.
AXA’s published guidance says that anything not originally in the vehicle can be a modification, including a change made before you bought the car, and advises declaring aesthetic alterations as well as performance work. That means a used car with a previous owner’s wheels, suspension or wrap still needs an accurate declaration.
Interior, security and accessibility equipment
- Upgraded audio systems, speakers, amplifiers and screens.
- Roll cages, harnesses, racing seats and steering-wheel changes.
- Immobilisers, tracking devices and other security equipment.
- Hand controls, ramps, lifts and other accessibility adaptations.
Some insurers distinguish between factory options, dealer-fitted equipment and aftermarket parts. Ask how each item will be classified rather than relying on your own interpretation.
How each level of cover treats a modified car
Third-party-only
Third-party-only cover meets the legal minimum for damage or injury you cause to others. It does not pay for repairs to your own modified vehicle, its wheels, exhaust, audio system or other equipment after an accident that was your fault. Declaring modifications still matters: an undisclosed change can affect whether the policy is valid and may expose you to recovery of third-party costs.

Third-party, fire and theft
This adds cover for specified fire and theft losses, but not ordinary accidental damage to your own car. Check whether the insurer pays for the modified parts or only the manufacturer’s standard equivalent. Security modifications may be relevant to underwriting, while an undocumented performance modification may be treated as a material non-disclosure.
Comprehensive
Comprehensive cover generally includes accidental damage to your own vehicle, but “comprehensive” does not mean “every part replaced like-for-like.” The policy may use standard replacement parts, impose a limit on accessories, apply a separate excess, or exclude a modification altogether. Read the definitions of vehicle, accessories, adaptations, approved parts and total loss.
Why disclosure is the central issue
When you obtain a quote, renew, change the vehicle or add a modification, give a complete and accurate description. Include the make, model, part or work performed, date fitted, supplier or installer where known, and any change to power, dimensions, value or intended use. Tell the insurer about modifications that existed before purchase.
Ask the insurer to confirm acceptance in writing and check that the change appears on the statement of fact, schedule or endorsement. Keep invoices, photographs, engineering reports and receipts. A call-centre assurance that is not reflected in the documents can be difficult to prove later.

What can happen after an undisclosed change is found?
The outcome depends on the policy wording, the significance of the change, what you knew and whether the insurer would have accepted the risk on different terms. Possible consequences include a higher premium or excess, a reduced settlement, rejection of a claim, cancellation, or treating the policy as void from the start. AXA states that failing to disclose a modification can void the policy, leave claims unpaid and permit recovery of third-party costs from the policyholder.
The Financial Ombudsman Service says it examines the policy wording and type of cover when handling complaints. In one case it agreed that an insurer was entitled to void the policy and refuse all claims after undisclosed modifications were discovered. In another, it found that a customer who had disclosed modifications still did not have the modification value covered. Disclosure therefore establishes what the insurer knew; it does not automatically create like-for-like or agreed-value protection.
How modified parts are paid for after a claim
Like-for-like replacement
Some policies promise repair or replacement with equivalent modified parts. Confirm whether “equivalent” means the same brand and specification, a part of similar quality, or the manufacturer’s standard component. Ask how unavailable or discontinued parts are handled.

Standard-part substitution
A policy may cover the accident but pay only for the factory specification. You could then have to fund the difference between a standard bumper, wheel, exhaust or suspension component and the part installed on your car. This is a common reason a comprehensive policy can still leave modification costs uninsured.
Accessory or modification limits
Audio equipment, wheels, tools, adaptations and other accessories may have individual or aggregate limits. A high-value sound system or set of forged wheels can exceed those limits even when the item is listed. Check whether the excess applies once to the claim or separately to accessories.
Agreed value and total loss
Market value is the amount the insurer considers the vehicle worth immediately before the loss; it is not necessarily the amount you spent on modifications. An agreed-value policy records a pre-agreed settlement figure, and Which? notes that this can recognise money and time invested in a vehicle if it is written off. Agreed-value cover is usually more expensive and may require photographs, invoices, an independent valuation or periodic review.
Ask what happens to removed or retained parts, salvage, specialist equipment and personal belongings after a total loss. A policy that recognises modifications for repairs may still use a different method for a write-off.
How to compare policies before buying
- Make a complete modification inventory. Inspect the car, invoices and previous-owner information. Record engine and software work, suspension, brakes, wheels and tyres, exhaust, bodywork, paint or wrap, glass tint, audio, security and accessibility equipment.
- Describe each item precisely. Give dimensions, brands, part numbers, power changes and dates where available. Do not rely on labels such as “sports suspension” or “stage-two tune” without details.
- Request written acceptance. Check the statement of fact, schedule and endorsements for every item. Correct errors before paying or driving under the policy.
- Compare the parts promise. Ask whether repairs use like-for-like modified parts, equivalent parts or standard manufacturer parts, and whether you may choose a specialist repairer.
- Check the valuation. Establish whether the car is settled at market value, an agreed value or another stated limit. Ask how modification receipts and appreciation are treated.
- Read exclusions and caps. Look for exclusions or limits covering performance parts, wheels, exhausts, audio, tints, structural changes, track use, commuting, security devices and adaptations.
- Check repair arrangements. Find out whether an approved repairer is mandatory, whether a specialist garage can be used, and whether supplied or used parts are permitted.
- Compare excesses and fees. Include compulsory and voluntary excesses, endorsement charges, valuation fees and any additional charge for changes during the term.
- Confirm use and legality. Verify that the proposed modifications are road legal, roadworthy and recorded with DVLA where required. Confirm that social, domestic, commuting, business or club use is covered.
- Save the evidence. Retain the quote, modification list, policy documents, photographs, invoices and correspondence in one place.
Specialist insurers may not appear on comparison websites. An independent broker can search a wider market, but acceptance and pricing still depend on the particular vehicle and modification list. A specialist policy is not automatically cheaper than a standard policy that has properly accepted the changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat affects the price?
There is no reliable, topic-specific percentage that predicts how much a modification will add to a premium. Insurers price the complete risk rather than applying one universal surcharge. Factors can include:
- the driver’s age, experience, claims and convictions;
- the vehicle’s make, model, power, value and repair cost;
- the type, quality and extent of each modification;
- where the car is kept, annual mileage and security arrangements;
- the intended use, including commuting, business, shows or club events;
- the selected cover, voluntary excess and valuation method;
- the availability of suitable repairers and replacement parts.
Reducing the declared value or omitting a modification to obtain a lower quote can leave a substantial uninsured loss and jeopardise the entire claim. Compare the total premium and excess with the protection actually offered, not just the headline quote.

DVLA, roadworthiness and structural changes
Insurance and vehicle registration are separate responsibilities. GOV.UK says structural changes to a chassis, monocoque bodyshell or frame must be notified to DVLA, and it advises checking that insurance remains valid after a modification. The DVLA INF318 guidance distinguishes repairs or restorations returned to the original specification from structural modifications and calls for a modified-vehicle statement and supporting evidence for structural work.
Notify DVLA through the applicable process, keep engineering or inspection evidence, and tell the insurer what was submitted. A registration update does not make an unsafe or illegal modification acceptable to an insurer, and insurance acceptance does not remove the keeper’s duty to maintain roadworthiness. Brakes, tyres, lights, steering, suspension, emissions and body security must remain safe and compliant for the vehicle’s use and jurisdiction.

You bought a car with aftermarket wheels
Photograph the wheels and tyres, identify their sizes and tell the insurer before driving. Ask whether replacement is like-for-like and whether a wheel limit or separate excess applies. If the seller cannot provide details, have the specification checked rather than declaring an unsupported guess.
You had an ECU remap but no visible hardware change
Obtain the tuner’s invoice or specification and disclose the remap. Software changes can affect power, drivability and underwriting even when the engine bay looks standard.
You fitted a wrap after taking out the policy
Notify the insurer before the change or as soon as the policy requires. Confirm whether the wrap is treated as part of the vehicle, an accessory or an appearance modification, and whether removal or replacement costs are covered after damage.
You are replacing a standard exhaust with a performance system
Provide the system’s details and any emissions or noise certification. Ask whether the policy excludes non-compliant equipment and whether a claim would be settled with the same system or a standard exhaust.
The car is written off after a non-fault crash
Do not assume the other driver’s insurer will reimburse every modification cost. Your own policy’s valuation and evidence may affect the settlement, while liability negotiations can involve separate questions about pre-accident value and contribution. Give the claims handler the accepted modification list, photographs, invoices and valuation documents.

If an insurer refuses a claim or disputes a modification
- Request the decision and the exact policy clause in writing.
- Ask for the statement of fact, proposal answers, endorsements and claims evidence used to reach it.
- Correct factual errors and provide invoices, photographs, installer details, valuation reports and proof of disclosure.
- Use the insurer’s formal complaints procedure and keep a dated record of every contact.
- If the final response does not resolve the issue, check whether you can refer the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service within its applicable time limits.
Do not repair, sell or alter damaged modified parts before the insurer has had a reasonable opportunity to inspect them unless emergency safety work is necessary. Keep receipts for temporary repairs and follow the policy’s notification requirements.
Changing or adding modifications during the policy term
Contact the insurer before fitting a new part whenever possible. A change can alter the premium, excess, permitted use or acceptance decision. Ask for the effective date, any mid-term adjustment fee and updated documents. If the insurer will not cover the change, arrange alternative cover before using the car; continuing to drive while relying on an informal assumption creates a gap that a later claim may expose.
At renewal, review the list from scratch. Remove parts that are no longer fitted, add work completed during the year and update the vehicle’s estimated value. Keep evidence of reversions as well as upgrades, because an inaccurate list can be misleading in either direction.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will comprehensive insurance automatically cover aftermarket modifications?
No. Comprehensive describes the type of own-vehicle cover, not automatic acceptance of non-standard parts. The insurer must accept and record each modification, and the wording may still limit settlement to standard parts or a stated amount.
Do I need specialist modified-car insurance?
Not always. A mainstream insurer may accept the car and list its changes. Specialist cover is useful when the vehicle has extensive, unusual or high-value modifications, but compare the actual terms rather than relying on the policy label.
What if I did not know a previous owner had modified the car?
Tell the insurer as soon as you discover the change, provide evidence of when you bought the car and ask for written confirmation of acceptance. The change can still affect a claim even if you did not install it.
Can I insure a structurally modified vehicle without telling DVLA?
Do not assume so. Structural changes to a chassis, monocoque bodyshell or frame may require DVLA notification, and you must also confirm that the insurer accepts the work and that the vehicle remains roadworthy.
Is an agreed-value policy always better?
It can provide clearer protection for a high-value modified vehicle because the settlement is agreed in advance, but it is usually more expensive and may require evidence and periodic review. Check the exact definition and conditions.
