Model 3 Vs. Model Y: 10 Differences Between Tesla’s Big-Selling EVs

The Model 3 is cheaper, more efficient and quicker; the Model Y offers far more cargo space, rear-seat room, ride height, towing ability and optional seven-seat utility. Here is how the current U.S. trims compare.

The Model 3 is the better choice for buyers who prioritize price, range, efficiency and acceleration. The Model Y costs more, but its taller crossover body delivers substantially more usable cargo space, rear-seat room, easier entry and exit, optional third-row seating and factory-supported towing.

For most shoppers, the decision is sedan efficiency versus crossover practicality. The two Teslas share software, charging access and much of their underlying technology, but they are not the same car with different bodywork.

This comparison covers the U.S. lineup, prices and specifications checked as of August 9, 2026. Tesla frequently changes prices, trim names and standard equipment, so verify the final configuration in the Model 3 configurator and Model Y configurator before ordering.

Model 3 vs. Model Y: the quick answer

Choose the Model 3 if the car will usually carry one or two people, you prefer a low seating position and sedan-like handling, you want the longest available EPA-estimated range, or you want the quickest Tesla in comparable trims without paying for crossover utility.

Choose the Model Y if you regularly carry children, pets, bicycles, strollers, tall passengers or bulky boxes. Its liftgate, taller cargo area, extra rear legroom, higher ground clearance, optional seven-seat layout and tow rating can justify the higher price even though it is generally slower and less efficient.

The most important rule is to compare exact trims and drivetrains. A base rear-wheel-drive Model 3 and a Model Y Performance are not meaningful substitutes, and even two cars wearing the same general trim label can have different equipment.

2026 U.S. lineup at a glance

The prices below are Tesla-listed vehicle prices before destination and order fees. Tesla sometimes displays a price that includes a $1,390 destination charge and a $250 order fee, so the number shown on the live order page may be higher. Taxes, registration, financing, leasing and incentives are not included.

The 10 important differences

1. The Model 3 is a sedan; the Model Y is a compact crossover

The Model 3 has a low-slung sedan body and a conventional trunk. The Model Y is a taller crossover with a powered liftgate and a much larger rear opening.

That distinction affects nearly every part of ownership. The Model 3 has a lower seating position, lower center of gravity and a more aerodynamic shape. The Model Y places occupants higher, gives the driver a more upright view and makes it easier for many people to get in and out.

The Model Y is not a traditional body-on-frame SUV. It is a unibody crossover that shares underlying architecture and technology with the Model 3, while using different body structure, suspension tuning, cargo hardware, tires and seating configurations. Calling it a crossover is more technically accurate than treating it as a rugged SUV.

Best fit: The Model 3 suits drivers who like a low car and more connected sedan feel. The Model Y suits buyers who value visibility, access and flexibility more than a low driving position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For additional manufacturer dimensions and cargo information, consult the Model 3 owner information and Model Y owner information.

2. The Model Y is taller and has more ground clearance, not dramatically longer

Buyers often picture the Model Y as much longer than the Model 3. In practice, the most noticeable difference is height.

Measurement Model 3 base/Premium Model Y base Model Y Premium
Length 185.8 inches 188.7 inches 188.6 inches
Width excluding mirrors 72.8 inches 75.6 inches 75.6 inches
Height 56.7 inches 63.8 inches 63.9–64.0 inches
Wheelbase 113.2 inches 113.8 inches 113.8 inches
Ground clearance, unladen 5.4 inches 6.4 inches 6.6 inches

The current non-Performance Model Y is approximately 2.9 inches longer, 1.6 inches wider excluding mirrors, 7.1 inches taller and has a 0.2-inch-longer wheelbase than the Model 3. The extra width can matter in a tight garage, while the extra height is what creates more headroom, cargo volume and seating access.

The Model 3 may be easier to place in a narrow urban parking space. The Model Y’s additional ground clearance is useful on steep driveways, rough roads and unpaved approaches, but it does not turn the vehicle into an off-road SUV.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. The Model Y has substantially more rear-seat room

The Model Y’s longer, taller cabin is more accommodating for passengers in the second row. Tesla lists approximately 40.5 inches of rear legroom for both the base and Premium Model Y, compared with 34.5 inches in the Model 3.

That six-inch difference is much more meaningful than the small exterior length difference suggests. It gives a child-seat installation more breathing room and makes the Model Y easier to live with when adults regularly sit in back. The higher roof and more upright doors also make loading children into car seats less awkward for many families.

The Model 3 can still work well for two adults or a small family, especially if rear passengers are not tall. But if rear-seat comfort is a daily requirement rather than an occasional need, the Model Y is the safer choice. Sit in both vehicles with the actual child seats, boosters or passengers before ordering; published legroom does not capture every seating-position preference.

4. The Model Y’s liftgate makes its cargo space more useful

This is the Model Y’s decisive practical advantage. The Model 3 may have enough room for suitcases and routine groceries, but its trunk opening limits the size and shape of objects that can pass through. The Model Y’s powered liftgate creates a taller, wider opening and a more flexible load floor.

Cargo measurement Model 3 Model Y base Model Y Premium, five seats
Frunk 3.1 cu. ft. 4.0 cu. ft. 4.1 cu. ft.
Behind second row 21.0 cu. ft. 29.5 cu. ft. 29.0 cu. ft.
Maximum published total 24.1 cu. ft. 74.8 cu. ft. 75.5 cu. ft.

Do not compare the 24.1-cubic-foot Model 3 number directly with the Model Y’s 74.8–75.5-cubic-foot figure without checking the measurement basis. Tesla’s Model 3 figure is a maximum total-cargo figure presented with five occupants, while Model Y specifications also publish maximum volume behind the first row with the rear seats folded. The most useful like-for-like everyday comparison is the volume behind the second row: 21.0 cubic feet in the Model 3 versus roughly 29 cubic feet in the Model Y.

In real use, the opening matters as much as the number. A bicycle, dog crate, stroller, tall box or muddy outdoor equipment is easier to load into the Model Y. The Model 3’s separate trunk is better suited to keeping luggage enclosed and organized, but it is less forgiving of bulky cargo.

Both vehicles also have a frunk, though the Model Y’s is larger. See Tesla’s Model 3 dimensions and cargo specifications and Model Y dimensions and cargo specifications for the manufacturer figures.

5. The Model 3 starts cheaper, but the trim gap changes the calculation

The base Model 3 RWD starts at $36,990 before destination and order fees. The base Model Y RWD starts at $39,990, making the initial gap approximately $3,000. The base Model Y AWD starts at $41,990.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That simple entry-price comparison is not the whole story. The Model 3 Premium RWD is $42,490, while the Model Y Premium RWD is $45,990. The Premium AWD versions are $47,490 and $49,990 respectively. Performance versions are $54,990 for the Model 3 and $57,990 for the Model Y.

In other words, the Model Y’s practical advantage carries a price premium, but the size of that premium depends on the exact version. It can be reasonable to compare a Model 3 Premium RWD with a Model Y Premium RWD if you need more space without giving up much range. It is not reasonable to assume that a base Model Y has the same equipment as a Premium Model Y simply because both are called Model Y.

Tesla’s naming has also become unreliable. The cheapest versions have been called Standard on some pages and were reportedly renamed simply Model Y on others. Some pages may still use legacy Long Range terminology. Identify the vehicle by drivetrain, range, equipment and price rather than relying on the badge alone. MotorTrend’s lineup reporting and Cars.com’s equipment and pricing coverage document some of these changes.

Before comparing your final out-the-door price, separate:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Tesla’s vehicle price before destination and order fees;
  • destination and order fees shown by Tesla;
  • sales tax, registration and local charges;
  • financing or lease promotions; and
  • state or federal incentives, if you actually qualify.

Do not subtract a federal EV tax credit from the headline price without verifying the current law, vehicle sourcing rules, income limits, purchase date and state program. Incentives can change independently of Tesla’s pricing.

6. The Model 3 generally delivers better range and efficiency

The lower Model 3 body is more aerodynamic and generally requires less energy to move than the taller Model Y. The EPA figures show the advantage most clearly in comparable higher trims.

Comparison Model 3 Model Y Difference
Base RWD 321 miles 321 miles Equal EPA estimate
Premium RWD 363 miles 357 miles Model 3 leads by 6 miles
Premium AWD 346 miles 327 miles Model 3 leads by 19 miles
Performance AWD 309 miles 306 miles Model 3 leads by 3 miles

The base RWD versions are the important exception: they are both rated at 321 miles despite the Model Y’s taller body. The Model Y base AWD falls to 294 miles, while the Model 3 Premium RWD reaches the highest rating in this comparison at 363 miles.

EPA range is a standardized estimate, not a guaranteed trip distance. Highway speed, cold weather, headwinds, elevation, tire choice, wheel size, roof racks, payload and heating or air-conditioning use can materially change consumption. Larger wheels can also reduce range and ride compliance on either vehicle.

One controlled test illustrates why EPA figures should not be treated as a ceiling or promise: Edmunds recorded 393 miles from a 2026 Model 3 Premium RWD against its 363-mile EPA estimate. That was one test under specific conditions, not a result every owner should expect.

Range verdict: The Model 3 is the better choice for long-distance efficiency, especially in Premium RWD form. The Model Y Premium RWD is the crossover compromise for buyers who need its cargo and passenger space but still want a 357-mile EPA rating.

7. The Model 3 is quicker in comparable performance versions

Tesla’s acceleration figures favor the lower, lighter Model 3 across the lineup:

Comparable version Model 3 Model Y
Base RWD 5.8 seconds 6.8 seconds
Premium RWD 4.9 seconds 5.4 seconds
Premium AWD 4.2 seconds 4.6 seconds
Performance AWD 2.9 seconds 3.3 seconds

The Model 3 Performance is listed with a 163-mph top speed, compared with 155 mph for the Model Y Performance. Tesla specifies the Model 3’s 2.9-second 0–60-mph time with rollout subtracted, so compare the test methodology as well as the number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For ordinary public-road driving, both cars are fast enough that seating, ride, visibility and cargo needs will matter more than a few tenths of a second. The Model 3’s lower height, lower center of gravity and performance specifications provide the mechanical basis for calling it the sportier choice, but that remains a driving-character inference rather than a universal comfort or handling judgment.

Choose the Model 3 Performance for maximum acceleration, higher listed top speed and the sharper sedan format. Choose the Model Y Performance if you want serious straight-line performance without giving up the hatchback and crossover seating position.

8. Charging is broadly similar, but exact trim matters

The charging experience is more alike than the body styles suggest. Tesla lists maximum DC charging rates of up to:

  • 225 kW for base Model 3 and base Model Y versions; and
  • 250 kW for Premium and Performance versions.

The exact charging curve depends on battery temperature, state of charge, charger capability, weather and the vehicle configuration. A car may briefly reach its maximum rate but will not hold that rate through the entire charging session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tesla’s 15-minute figures also vary by trim. The Model 3 Premium RWD is listed at up to 195 miles added in 15 minutes, while the Model Y Premium RWD is listed at up to 182 miles. Those figures use Tesla’s constant-speed methodology and should not be interpreted as a universal real-world result.

For road trips, both models benefit from Tesla’s Supercharger ecosystem and integrated route planning. The more important charging distinction is base versus Premium or Performance equipment, not a blanket Model 3-versus-Model Y rule. A Model 3 does not automatically charge faster than every Model Y.

Check the current Model 3 specifications and current Model Y specifications for the exact vehicle you are considering.

9. Base-trim cabin equipment is not identical

Both cars use Tesla’s minimalist, screen-centered cabin, but the cheapest Model Y removes more visible convenience and comfort equipment than many older comparison articles imply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Base Model 3

Tesla lists the base Model 3 with a 15.4-inch center touchscreen, heated front seats and steering wheel, a panoramic glass roof and 24 cubic feet of cargo space. Its listed maximum charging rate is 225 kW.

Base Model Y

Current reporting identifies several reductions on the entry Model Y compared with Premium versions, including:

  • manual-folding exterior mirrors;
  • manual steering-column adjustment;
  • no rear passenger touchscreen;
  • simpler rear ventilation;
  • a seven-speaker audio system rather than the Premium system;
  • fabric or textile seating surfaces instead of higher-trim synthetic-leather surfaces; and
  • manual rear-seat folding hardware.

The precise standard-equipment list can change without a conventional model-year announcement. Confirm it on the live order page, particularly if you are comparing a base Model Y with a used or newly refreshed Premium example.

Premium versions add comfort and cabin equipment such as upgraded seating materials, improved suspension, larger wheels and additional screen or audio hardware depending on the trim. The Premium Model Y also uses a 16-inch center screen, while the base Model Y is listed with a 15.4-inch center screen. Rear screens are available on Premium versions but not the base Model Y according to the current equipment reporting from MotorTrend and Cars.com.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neither car should be judged only by its screen size. If cabin quietness, seat material, suspension tuning or rear-passenger hardware matters, compare the exact trim and take a test drive. The refreshed Model Y’s updated suspension and acoustic treatment should not automatically be assumed to match an older Model Y.

10. The Model Y offers towing, a liftgate and an optional third row

The Model Y is the clear choice for buyers who need manufacturer-supported towing. Tesla’s current Model Y owner’s manual lists a maximum trailer rating of up to 3,500 pounds for many five-seat configurations, with lower limits possible for the seven-seat version depending on passenger count and wheel size. The manual lists a maximum tongue weight of 350 pounds for the higher-rated configurations.

Those limits do not apply to every Model Y in every configuration. Check the vehicle’s exact wheel size, number of passengers and tow-package documentation before selecting a trailer. The Model 3’s current U.S. specifications do not present a comparable factory towing rating, so an aftermarket hitch or unofficial towing practice should not be treated as equivalent to a manufacturer-rated tow package.

The Model Y Premium AWD can also be configured with up to seven seats. The third row is compact and should not be treated as equivalent to the third row in a full-size SUV. It may be useful for children or occasional short trips, but families should test the actual third-row space, child-seat arrangement and access before purchase. Not every Model Y has seven seats.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These features make the Model Y the more versatile family vehicle: it can carry bulky items, accommodate more rear-seat legroom, accept a trailer and provide occasional extra seating. The Model 3 remains the better tool for buyers who rarely need those capabilities and would rather spend less on a more efficient, quicker sedan.

See Tesla’s Model Y towing guidance and Model Y seating information before ordering.

Important specifications that are the same or similar

Despite the practical differences, the cars share more ownership fundamentals than their body styles suggest.

Both use Tesla’s software environment and provide access to the Supercharger network, but ownership is still configuration-dependent. Hardware, tires, suspension, battery, cameras and cabin equipment can vary by trim and build date. Tesla’s official model comparison page is useful for checking current equipment, but the final vehicle order page is the authority for the car you are actually buying.

Model 3 or Model Y for common buyer situations

For a commuter or couple

The Model 3 is usually the more rational choice if most trips involve one or two people. Its lower purchase price, 321-mile base range and efficient shape can reduce charging stops and leave more money for home-charging equipment or other ownership costs. Choose the Model Y instead if you frequently carry large recreational equipment or simply prefer its higher seating position.

For a family with child seats

The Model Y’s rear legroom and taller access are meaningful daily advantages. Its liftgate is also more useful for a stroller, diaper bag and groceries. The base Model Y’s equipment reductions may make a Premium trim or a carefully inspected used example more attractive, so compare the actual cabin rather than only the body style.

For a dog owner, cyclist or outdoor user

The Model Y is the obvious fit for a dog crate, bicycles and dirty or tall equipment. The large rear opening and fold-flat cargo area are more valuable than the headline cubic-foot number. A Model 3 can carry ordinary luggage, but its trunk opening may be the limiting factor.

For a road-trip buyer

The Model 3 Premium RWD has the highest EPA-estimated range in this lineup, at 363 miles. The Model Y Premium RWD gives up only six EPA miles while offering much more cargo space and rear-seat room. For a family road trip, that small range difference may be worth trading for the Model Y’s utility.

For an enthusiast

The Model 3 Performance is the quicker and faster-listed vehicle. The Model Y Performance is still exceptionally quick, but its appeal is combining performance with hatchback practicality and a higher seating position. Wheel and tire selection can affect ride quality, range and handling in either car.

What to know when shopping used

A used Model 3 or Model Y is not one uniform product. Model-year labels conceal changes in batteries, factories, suspension, cameras, interior design, software hardware and standard equipment.

At minimum, separate:

  • refreshed Model 3 vehicles from earlier Model 3 examples;
  • refreshed 2026 Model Y vehicles from earlier Model Y examples;
  • five-seat Model Y vehicles from seven-seat versions;
  • base, Premium or Long Range and Performance trims; and
  • cars with or without features such as a rear screen, upgraded audio, heat pump, tow package or newer camera hardware.

Do not compare a 2021 Model Y with a new 2026 Model Y as though mileage were the only difference. Ask for the original window sticker or build configuration, verify the battery and drive-unit warranty mileage, inspect tire wear and wheel damage, test the charging equipment and confirm that the features you expect are physically present.

For a used Tesla, the vehicle identification details and build date are more informative than the words Model 3 or Model Y in an advertisement. Recurrent’s used-market comparison is useful context, but it should not replace an inspection of the specific car.

Why older Model 3 vs. Model Y comparisons can be wrong

Many prominent comparison pages predate the current lineup. For example, a widely circulated Tom’s Guide comparison was last updated October 25, 2024. It includes older prices, older range figures and older Model Y configurations, along with an obvious 209-second acceleration typo in its table. It can show what shoppers commonly ask, but it should not be used as the current pricing or specification authority.

Other older articles compare a Model 3 RWD with a Model Y Long Range AWD, or mix Performance specifications with standard versions. The current lineup includes base RWD, Model Y base AWD, Premium RWD, Premium AWD and Performance versions. Always write down the exact drivetrain, trim, wheel choice, range and equipment before comparing two listings.

The 2024 Model 3 refresh and the substantially updated 2026 Model Y lineup also mean that older reviews may describe different seats, suspension, screens, audio systems, exterior lighting or cabin insulation. A used-car review can remain useful, but its date and exact configuration matter.

Two final cautions before ordering

Full Self-Driving is not autonomous driving

Tesla’s driver-assistance features, including Full Self-Driving (Supervised), require an attentive driver. Neither the Model 3 nor the Model Y should be described as self-driving or autonomous. Evaluate the feature set and current pricing separately from the vehicle’s basic value.

Do not include the overseas Model Y L in this comparison

Tesla’s Model Y page includes a Model Y L Premium with three-row, six-seat specifications, but the illustrated vehicle is identified as an overseas model. It should not be treated as part of the normal U.S. Model Y lineup unless U.S. availability is independently confirmed.

Final verdict

The Model 3 is the better value for drivers who can live with a sedan trunk. It is less expensive at the base level, reaches farther in its best-range trim, uses energy more efficiently and is quicker in comparable versions.

The Model Y is worth the premium for buyers who will actually use its cargo room, rear-seat space, liftgate, optional third row or tow capability. If you do not need those advantages, buy the Model 3; if you do, the Model Y’s modest range and performance compromises are likely easier to accept than living with too little space.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Model Y have more range than the Model 3?

Usually not. The base RWD versions are both EPA-rated at 321 miles, but the Model 3 Premium RWD leads the Model Y Premium RWD by six miles, and the Model 3 Premium AWD leads the comparable Model Y by 19 miles. EPA range varies by drivetrain, wheels and conditions.

Can every Model Y seat seven people?

No. The optional third row is available on specified Model Y Premium AWD configurations. The third row is compact, and passenger count and cargo capacity should be tested with the intended child seats or passengers before purchase.

Can the Model 3 tow a trailer?

Tesla’s current U.S. Model 3 specifications do not present a comparable factory towing rating. The Model Y has factory-supported towing in qualifying configurations, with ratings that depend on passenger count and wheel size. An aftermarket hitch should not be treated as an equivalent manufacturer-rated tow package.

Is the cheapest Model Y the same as the Premium Model Y?

No. The base Model Y removes equipment such as the rear passenger touchscreen, upgraded audio, some exterior lighting, power or automatic adjustments and higher-trim seating materials. Tesla can change standard equipment, so check the live configurator for the exact vehicle.

Should I compare a used 2021 Model Y with a new 2026 Model Y?

Only after separating the generation, refresh, trim, battery, seating configuration and equipment. Older and newer Model Ys can differ in suspension, interior hardware, cameras, audio, heat-pump availability and tow equipment. The model name alone is not enough.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy the Model 3 for price, range, efficiency and performance. Buy the Model Y when its liftgate, rear-seat room, cargo flexibility, optional third row or towing capability will be used regularly.
