Mitsubishi’s 1993 U.S. brochure lists the 3000GT VR-4 at 300 hp. Those figures make the Final Edition the leader among these directly comparable examples—but the sources do not support a definitive ranking of ten distinct Mitsubishi sports cars, or a claim that 303 hp is the highest figure across every market and model year.
What this horsepower comparison can—and cannot—rank
A useful factory-horsepower ranking needs an exact model year and trim, a market, and a rating unit. Mitsubishi’s figures here span U.S. horsepower (hp) and Thai-market PS, while the 3000GT figures include both a period brochure and a later secondary specification archive. Treating those numbers as if they were one consistent dataset would create a misleading top ten.
The table separates the available figures by source and evidence. The U.S. hp entries can be compared numerically as reported, but they still describe different model years and trims. The PS figure is kept in PS, and the later 3000GT archive figure is identified as provisional rather than merged into the period brochure comparison.
| Model and trim | Factory output reported | Market and year | Evidence and comparison note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2015 Lancer Evolution Final Edition | 303 hp; 305 lb-ft | U.S., 2015 | Mitsubishi Motors’ official Lancer history page; the page is undated. Strongly supported factory figure. |
| 3000GT VR-4 | 300 hp | U.S., 1993 | Mitsubishi Motors’ 1993 U.S. full-line brochure. The brochure describes a twin-turbo, intercooled 3.0-liter V6 and full-time AWD. |
| Lancer Evolution | 291 hp | U.S., 2015 | Mitsubishi Motors’ official Lancer history page; the page is undated. This is distinct from the Final Edition figure. |
| 3000GT, base model | 222 hp | U.S., 1993 | Mitsubishi Motors’ 1993 U.S. full-line brochure. It is not the VR-4; trim matters when comparing output. |
| 3000GT VR-4 | 320 hp | Later model; exact year and market basis not established by the cited table | 3000GT Online’s “1994–1999 Specs” archive, publication date not stated. The archive says the specifications were provided by Mitsubishi, but the year-specific basis is not clear enough here to combine this figure with the 1993 brochure rating. |
| Eclipse GS Turbo and GSX | Up to 195 hp | Market context: Canada; the cited history page does not establish a single model year for this maximum | Mitsubishi Motors Canada’s “Mitsubishi Eclipse History,” undated. This is a stated maximum for turbo trims, not a one-year, all-generation ranking entry. |
| First-generation Lancer Evolution | Up to 250 PS | Thailand-market history; the cited page does not specify a model year for this maximum | Mitsubishi Motors Thailand’s “Mitsubishi Evo – History, Design and Performance,” undated. The source reports PS, not U.S. hp. |
Which Mitsubishi has the most horsepower in the confirmed U.S. figures?
Among the directly documented U.S. ratings in Mitsubishi’s official history page and 1993 brochure, the 2015 Lancer Evolution Final Edition leads with 303 hp, narrowly ahead of the 1993 3000GT VR-4 at 300 hp. Mitsubishi reports 305 lb-ft for the Final Edition. The same official history gives 291 hp for the 2015 Lancer Evolution, so the Final Edition’s output should not be attributed to every 2015 Evo.

This is a comparison of the confirmed examples, not proof of Mitsubishi’s all-time or global horsepower record. The 320-hp VR-4 figure in the later-model archive could change the ordering for a particular year, but the archive’s year-specific basis is not sufficiently clear to treat it as a verified counterpart to the 1993 U.S. brochure rating.
Why market and trim change the result
Do not mix hp and PS without saying so
Mitsubishi Motors Thailand reports up to 250 PS for the original Lancer Evolution. That is the source’s unit and market context; it should not be relabeled as hp or placed in a U.S.-hp order without a clearly stated conversion and matching specification basis.

Do not treat a model name as one specification
The 1993 U.S. brochure lists the base 3000GT at 222 hp and the VR-4 at 300 hp. Those are separate trims, not conflicting ratings for one car. Mitsubishi Motors Canada’s Eclipse history likewise reports up to 195 hp for the GS Turbo and GSX, but does not establish that figure as the peak for every Eclipse generation or market.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is not a responsible top ten
The available factory documentation establishes several useful examples, not ten distinct models or trims on one consistent basis. It does not provide a sufficiently clear factory horsepower figure for the Galant VR-4, and the available material does not verify further candidates such as the Starion or FTO well enough to place them in a ranked list. Adding those names without model-specific documentation would turn a horsepower ranking into guesswork.

This comparison is limited to factory-rated road-car engine output. Modified-car figures and competition-car output, including rally-car figures, are not interchangeable with stock road-car specifications. No sales or market-size statistic is needed to establish the horsepower figures above.
