Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX vs. Evo X: Why Some IXs Command More

Some Evo IXs attract collector premiums for their 4G63 heritage and driving character, but no generation-wide price rule holds for every car.

The Evo IX can be more valuable to collectors because it is the final, most developed Lancer Evolution powered by Mitsubishi’s 4G63, and some buyers prefer its lighter, more direct character. But “the IX is worth more” is a market tendency, not a rule: condition, mileage, variant, originality, provenance and local demand can outweigh the generation badge.

Why the Evo IX attracts a collector premium

The IX is the last 4G63-powered Lancer Evolution. Mitsubishi’s company history notes that it added MIVEC variable valve timing to the turbocharged engine, giving the final generation a significant development over earlier 4G63 Evos. For enthusiasts attached to that engine and the IX’s reputation for a relatively direct driving experience, its place at the end of the 4G63 lineage is part of the appeal.

The Evo X made a substantial change: it replaced the 4G63 with the all-aluminium 4B11T and brought newer electronic controls. The change gives the X its own appeal, but some collectors prize the IX precisely because it represents the end of the older formula.

What changed when Mitsubishi moved to the Evo X?

Engine and weight

Mitsubishi’s 2008 technical review says the 4B11 engine mechanism reduced weight by up to 12.5 kg relative to the 4G63 mechanism. That is an engine-mechanism comparison, not a claim that the complete Evo X was lighter. In its November 2007 comparison, MotorTrend described the X as heavier than the outgoing 2006 IX, with about the same power at launch.

Driving character and electronics

The period comparison also pointed to the X’s beefier structure, additional sound insulation and electronic systems, including Active Yaw Control. Some fans interpreted those changes as making the X less raw than the IX. That was a contemporary enthusiast reaction, not proof that the X is objectively worse: the added refinement and electronic assistance may suit drivers who value them.

Trim and market matter

There is no single global Evo X specification. In the US, the source material describes a five-speed manual GSR and a six-speed twin-clutch MR; equipment and specifications vary by market and model year. Compare the actual trim, transmission and market specification rather than assuming every IX or X is alike.

What sale prices do—and do not—show

Two recent Evo IX auction records illustrate how far individual results can vary. A 2006 example with 13,000 miles sold for $45,000 on July 6, 2026, on Bring a Trailer. A different 2006 IX with 41,000 miles recorded a $67,725 sale on August 14, 2026, according to Hagerty’s record of a Cars & Bids sale.

These are individual IX sales, not an average, a forecast or a matched comparison with Evo Xs. They do not establish a percentage premium for the IX. Sale price depends on the particular car and the market at the time; use recent local results for comparable trim, condition and mileage when assessing a specific listing.

How to compare two actual listings

What to compare Why it matters
Condition and repair history Rust, structural repairs and accident or paint work can change a car’s desirability more than its generation.
Mileage and maintenance Look for records supporting the mileage and evidence of routine and major service, including timing-belt work.
Originality and tuning Assess the quality and documentation of modifications, and whether original drivetrain components remain.
Variant and specification Confirm the market, model year, trim and transmission. A limited or desirable derivative may be valued differently from a standard model.
Provenance Continuous ownership records, matching identity details where applicable, manuals and invoices help establish a car’s history.
Intended use and preference Choose based on the engine and driving character you want, not only on collector expectations.
Comparable local sales Use recent transactions for genuinely similar cars; isolated results from another market or a different specification may not translate.

What to inspect before buying an Evo IX

The checks below reflect recommendations in Car Collector International’s Evo IX buyer guide. They are a starting point, not a substitute for inspecting the individual vehicle.

  • Corrosion and repairs: Check the chassis and wheel arches for corrosion, and look for evidence of accident damage or poor paint and body repairs. A paint-depth gauge can help screen for inconsistent paint, but it cannot replace a careful body inspection.
  • Service and ownership records: Review service history, timing-belt work, ownership documents, manuals and invoices. Check identity details against the documentation where applicable.
  • Modifications and drivetrain: Ask what has been changed, who performed the work and whether original drivetrain components are available. Have tuning quality assessed by someone familiar with the model.
  • AYC and ACD operation: Confirm that the relevant differential systems operate correctly. Diagnostic checks may help identify issues.
  • Independent inspection: Arrange lift access and have a Mitsubishi Evolution specialist assess the car. A clean listing description is not evidence that hidden corrosion, repair or mechanical problems are absent.

Does a rare Evo IX variant explain the price?

Rarity can strengthen interest in a particular specification, but a variant figure should not be mistaken for total IX production. Car Collector International’s buyer guide lists 200 UK Evo IX MR FQ-360 cars. That is a UK-only figure for that variant, not a count of all Evo IXs worldwide. Exact global IX and X production totals are not established by the sources cited here, so they cannot support a reliable generation-wide scarcity comparison.

How to decide between an IX and an X

If you are buying, compare the cars in front of you rather than treating the IX’s collector reputation as a guarantee of value. A documented, well-maintained car can be a stronger purchase than a rarer derivative with major deferred maintenance. Weigh condition, specification and local comparable sales alongside your preference for the 4G63-era character or the X’s newer engine and electronic systems.
