Mitsubishi EV (Outlander PHEV) vs. Lancer Evolution: Performance, Range and Practicality

The phrase “Mitsubishi EV” can mean the battery-electric i-MiEV or plug-in-hybrid Outlander PHEV. This guide separates those powertrains, labels market-specific range figures and compares the Outlander PHEV with the 2015 Lancer Evolution and Final Edition on performance and practicality.

There is no single vehicle called the Mitsubishi EV. Mitsubishi’s electrification history includes the battery-electric i-MiEV and the plug-in-hybrid Outlander PHEV. The Lancer Evolution, by contrast, is a discontinued turbocharged gasoline performance sedan. The fair comparison therefore depends on which electrified Mitsubishi you mean.

For a current ownership comparison, the Outlander PHEV is the useful reference: it can cover routine trips on electricity and use its engine for longer journeys. It is not a battery-electric vehicle. The Evolution’s advantage is a very different one—performance hardware and a 291-hp (2015) or 303-hp/305-lb-ft (Final Edition) turbocharged drivetrain. Neither is a universal winner. Charging access, trip length, passenger and cargo needs, and the condition of any used Evolution should determine the choice.

First, define the Mitsubishi “EV”

Calling a car an “EV” without identifying its powertrain creates a misleading range comparison. Mitsubishi launched the mass-produced i-MiEV battery-electric vehicle in 2009. A battery-electric vehicle (BEV) has no gasoline engine; its usable travel is limited to the energy stored in its battery and whatever charging is available.

Mitsubishi released the Outlander PHEV plug-in hybrid in 2013. A plug-in hybrid has a traction battery and electric motors, but also an engine and fuel tank. Mitsubishi describes its intended use in two modes: “For everyday errands, school runs, or commuting EV Driving” and “For weekend outings or long-distance trips Hybrid Driving.” Those are manufacturer descriptions of a use case, not a guarantee of a particular distance in every climate or driving style.

That distinction changes the question you should ask:

  • For the i-MiEV, ask how far its battery can take you and where you can recharge.
  • For the Outlander PHEV, ask how much of your routine driving can be electric, then how comfortably the engine covers trips beyond the battery’s charge.
  • For a Lancer Evolution, ask about performance, condition, maintenance history and whether its sedan format fits your passengers and cargo.

This article uses the Outlander PHEV for the present-day electrified comparison and identifies the i-MiEV where the distinction matters. The published Outlander figures below are tied to specific markets, model years and test cycles; they are not interchangeable ratings.

At-a-glance comparison

Vehicle and version Powertrain Published output or range Drive system Current status
i-MiEV (launched 2009) Battery-electric vehicle Range not stated in the supplied Mitsubishi specifications Not stated in the supplied specifications Historical Mitsubishi EV
Outlander PHEV, Canada update (2026) Plug-in hybrid with battery, electric motors and engine 22.7-kWh battery; 72 km stated EV driving range Twin-motor 4WD with front and rear electric motors; associated with S-AWC Current-market example; Canada rating
Outlander PHEV, Japan grades (2024) Plug-in hybrid 22.7-kWh battery; 102 km WLTC for most grades, 106 km WLTC for M grade Twin-motor 4WD; associated with S-AWC Current-market example; Japan ratings
Lancer Evolution, 2015 Turbocharged gasoline MIVEC engine 291 hp Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) Discontinued; used-car purchase today
Lancer Evolution Final Edition (2015 history entry) Turbocharged gasoline engine 303 hp and 305 lb-ft; estimated 155-mph top speed S-AWC 1,000-unit limited series; used-car purchase today

The table deliberately does not invent acceleration, cargo-volume or charging-time comparisons. The supplied manufacturer material does not provide aligned figures for a specifically matched Outlander PHEV and Evolution generation, so a numerical ranking on those points would be false precision.

Performance: two completely different objectives

Lancer Evolution 2015: performance first

Mitsubishi’s U.S. model-history information lists the 2015 Lancer Evolution with a turbocharged 291-hp MIVEC engine and Super All-Wheel Control. That specification belongs to the 2015 model; it should not be silently substituted with the Final Edition’s output.

The Final Edition is a separate, limited version. Mitsubishi lists 303 hp and 305 lb-ft of torque, plus an estimated 155-mph top speed, and identifies a 1,000-unit production run. Those numbers explain why enthusiasts seek it, but they also mean you must verify the exact trim when comparing listings. A standard 2015 Evolution and a Final Edition are not the same performance specification.

The Evolution’s appeal is its mechanical focus: a turbocharged engine, an all-wheel-drive control system and a chassis intended for rapid, committed driving. That character can make ordinary roads entertaining, but it also makes the car a specialized used purchase rather than a new-car alternative with factory support.

Outlander PHEV: electric response and flexible traction

Mitsubishi describes the Outlander PHEV as using front and rear electric motors in a twin-motor 4WD system and associates that setup with S-AWC. Electric motors deliver their response without waiting for engine revs to build, while the vehicle’s mission remains family transport and electric-assisted efficiency rather than motorsport-style acceleration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No directly comparable acceleration time is established for the Outlander PHEV and a particular Evolution in the supplied material. It is therefore accurate to describe their driving priorities, but not to claim that one beats the other to a stated speed. The Evolution is the performance-oriented choice; the Outlander PHEV is the electrified utility vehicle that can still draw on an engine when the battery is depleted.

What the power figures do—and do not—tell you

Horsepower and torque are not a complete driving assessment. The 291-hp 2015 Evolution figure and the 303-hp/305-lb-ft Final Edition figure indicate engine output for two specific versions. They do not tell you the Outlander PHEV’s combined output, nor do they establish braking, cornering or acceleration results. Treat the figures as identification markers and a guide to intent, not as a complete head-to-head test.

Electric range: read the label beside the number

2026 Canada Outlander PHEV rating

Mitsubishi’s January 2026 Canada release gives the updated Outlander PHEV a 22.7-kWh battery and 72 km of stated EV driving range. That is a Canada-market figure for that update. It should not be copied into a listing for every Outlander PHEV sold elsewhere.

2024 Japan WLTC ratings

Mitsubishi’s October 2024 Japan release also identifies a 22.7-kWh battery, but reports 102 km of WLTC electric range for most grades and 106 km WLTC for the M grade. These values are Japan-market ratings obtained under the WLTC test cycle. They are not a contradiction of the Canadian number; they describe a different market, version and regulatory test context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Historical JC08 figure

For historical context, Mitsubishi’s 2018 Japan release reported 65.0 km under the JC08 cycle for a then-current Outlander PHEV revision. JC08 and WLTC are different test procedures, and the 2018 value is not the current model’s rating. Do not place 65.0 km, 72 km, 102 km and 106 km in one league table as if they were measured under identical conditions.

Why a rating is not a promise

Official range is a controlled rating. Ambient temperature, speed, heating or air-conditioning use, tire condition, payload, terrain and battery age can change the distance a driver actually achieves. A buyer should use the rating to identify the vehicle and plan a margin, not to promise that every commute will equal the laboratory result.

The supplied Mitsubishi specifications do not state a current i-MiEV range figure, so this article does not supply one from memory. If the i-MiEV is the vehicle under consideration, obtain the exact market and model-year specification before deciding whether its battery range fits your routine.

How the Outlander PHEV works in daily use

Short trips with a place to charge

The Outlander PHEV makes the most sense when you can charge at home or at a charging station between trips. A commuter who regularly drives within the vehicle’s rated electric range can begin many journeys with a full battery and use electric driving for errands, school runs and work travel. The practical benefit is not a single impressive range number; it is repeatedly replacing gasoline miles with charged electric miles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Long trips without planning every stop around a plug

When the battery’s charge is low or a journey extends beyond the electric portion, the engine provides a second energy source. That is the central practical difference from a BEV such as the i-MiEV and from a gasoline-only Evolution: the Outlander PHEV can continue a long trip using fuel rather than requiring every segment to be covered by a charger.

Charging equipment and compatibility

Home charging is part of Mitsubishi’s stated PHEV use case, but the correct cable, connector, amperage and installation depend on the vehicle’s market and model year. Confirm those details with the specific vehicle documentation and a qualified installer. The supplied specifications do not establish a universal charging time, so do not assume that a wall outlet or a particular public charger will refill the battery in a stated number of hours.

What makes the Evolution practical—or impractical—as a daily driver?

Reasons it can work

  • It is a sedan rather than a two-seat sports car, so it can serve as transport for more than one occupant.
  • All-wheel-drive control and a turbocharged engine give it a performance identity that is available on every drive, not only when a battery is charged.
  • As a discontinued model, it can appeal to a driver who values a distinctive used performance car more than the newest technology.

Reasons the decision requires caution

  • Every Evolution is now a used vehicle. The condition of the individual car can matter more than the badge or the advertised trim.
  • The supplied material does not establish comparative reliability, repair costs, fuel economy or cargo dimensions. Do not infer those figures from horsepower or from online anecdotes.
  • A performance-oriented car may have been modified, driven hard or maintained inconsistently. That is a reason for a model-specific inspection, not proof that every Evolution is unreliable.

Ask whether you have access to a specialist who can inspect the exact generation and drivetrain. Check the vehicle identification number against the advertised year and trim, and treat undocumented modifications or gaps in maintenance records as issues to resolve before purchase.

Used Evolution inspection checklist

Because Mitsubishi discontinued the model, buying one is a condition assessment rather than a new-car specification exercise. A qualified inspector should evaluate the individual car; the following checklist helps you organize that inspection:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm identity. Verify the model year, trim and vehicle identification number. Make sure a car advertised as a Final Edition is actually the limited version rather than a standard Evolution with badges or modifications.
  2. Review records. Look for continuous service documentation, receipts and evidence that scheduled maintenance was performed. Missing records do not prove a fault, but they increase uncertainty.
  3. Inspect the powertrain. Have a technician check the turbocharged engine, cooling system, transmission, differential and all-wheel-drive components for leaks, damage or abnormal operation.
  4. Check for modifications. Identify aftermarket engine, suspension, exhaust, wheel or software changes. Ask who installed them and whether original parts are included.
  5. Examine the chassis and body. Look for accident repairs, corrosion, uneven panel gaps, tire wear and signs of track or severe-use damage.
  6. Test the electronics and safety equipment. Confirm that warning lights clear correctly and that the instrument cluster, climate controls, lights and restraint systems operate as intended.
  7. Drive it cold and warm. A road test from a cold start can reveal noises or behavior hidden after the car has been preheated. Have the inspector document any symptoms rather than guessing at a repair bill.

This process cannot guarantee future costs, but it reduces the risk of buying a performance car based only on its advertised output.

Which vehicle fits which driver?

Your priority Most logical starting point Why What to verify
Quiet, repeatable electric commuting with home charging Outlander PHEV It combines a chargeable battery with engine backup and is designed for daily EV driving. Exact market/model-year range, charger compatibility and your typical trip distance.
Zero gasoline use on every trip A BEV such as the i-MiEV, if its exact range and condition fit A BEV has no engine, so it cannot switch to fuel when the battery is empty. Exact i-MiEV specification, battery condition and charging access; no current range figure is established here.
Turbocharged performance and enthusiast appeal Lancer Evolution The 2015 version is rated at 291 hp; the Final Edition at 303 hp and 305 lb-ft. Trim authenticity, maintenance history, modifications and specialist inspection.
Frequent long journeys with limited charging access Outlander PHEV The engine can support longer travel after the electric portion is used. Fuel availability, local energy costs and whether the vehicle’s electric range covers enough of your daily use.
Lowest-uncertainty new-car ownership Neither can be chosen on the supplied evidence alone The Evolution is discontinued, while the Outlander figures vary by market and year. Local availability, warranty terms and a complete specification for the exact vehicle.

Common comparison mistakes

Calling the Outlander PHEV a battery-electric car

It has a battery and electric motors, but it also has an engine. Use “plug-in hybrid” or “PHEV” so readers understand that long-distance travel can continue on fuel.

Mixing the Evolution’s trims

Quote 291 hp for the 2015 Lancer Evolution and 303 hp/305 lb-ft for the Final Edition. Do not present the Final Edition output as the specification of every 2015 car.

Using an old rating as a current promise

The 2018 JC08 number describes an earlier revision and test cycle. It cannot establish what a current Outlander PHEV will deliver.

Inventing precision where the specifications are not aligned

Without matched acceleration tests, cargo measurements, charging times and operating-cost assumptions, a precise winner on those axes is not defensible. State what is known and identify what must be checked for the exact vehicles.

A practical decision process

  1. Name the vehicle. Decide whether you are considering the i-MiEV, a particular Outlander PHEV market/model year, a 2015 Evolution or the Final Edition.
  2. Map your routine. Record weekday distance, longest monthly trip, passenger count, cargo needs and access to overnight charging.
  3. Match the energy system. If most trips fit the published electric range and charging is convenient, the PHEV’s electric mode may be useful. If every trip must be electric, investigate a BEV’s exact battery specification and condition. If driving involvement is the priority, focus on an inspected Evolution.
  4. Validate local details. Check the local test-cycle rating, connector and electrical requirements, fuel and electricity prices, tax treatment and parts availability. These vary by market and are not supplied as universal figures here.
  5. Inspect before committing. A used Evolution needs a specialist condition check. A used electrified vehicle also needs confirmation of battery health, charging operation and service history for its exact model year.
  6. Leave a margin. Plan trips below the published electric rating and allow for weather, traffic, payload and battery age. Treat the rating as a standardized reference, not a guaranteed distance.

Bottom line: choose the mission, not the badge

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and Lancer Evolution answer different questions. The Outlander PHEV is a plug-in-hybrid SUV built around electric daily driving with engine-supported long-distance flexibility. Its published electric range must be read with its market, model year and test cycle: 72 km for the updated 2026 Canada model, or 102 km WLTC for most 2024 Japan grades and 106 km for the Japan M grade, all with a stated 22.7-kWh battery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Evolution is a discontinued performance sedan. The 2015 version is listed at 291 hp, while the 1,000-unit Final Edition is listed at 303 hp and 305 lb-ft with an estimated 155-mph top speed. Buying one today means evaluating a used individual car, not selecting a current-production appliance.

Choose the Outlander PHEV when charging access, flexible long-distance travel and routine electric driving matter most. Choose an Evolution only when its performance character is the priority and a thorough inspection supports the specific car. If you meant the i-MiEV rather than the Outlander PHEV, restart the comparison with the exact i-MiEV market and model year; its battery-electric limitations make it a different proposition altogether.
