PerthNow reported that emergency crews were called shortly before 3:30 pm near the Hodges Drive exit, while the northbound freeway was closed at Ocean Reef Road and traffic was diverted. The report describes the van as engulfed in flames; it does not establish that the vehicle exploded.
What happened near Hodges Drive?
Claire Sadler’s PerthNow report, published at 4:35 pm on Thursday, 13 June 2024, said emergency services were called to a van fire on Mitchell Freeway near the Hodges Drive exit shortly before 3:30 pm. The article reported that the vehicle was engulfed in flames.
Although the report’s headline used the word “explodes,” its account does not confirm an explosion. It also does not state what caused the fire, identify the driver, or report whether anyone was injured or whether other property was damaged.
How long did firefighters take to control the fire?
According to PerthNow, three firefighting crews attended. The fire was under control shortly before 4 pm and fully extinguished by 4:15 pm. Those are the times reported in the article; it does not give a more precise time for the initial call or for the crews’ arrival.

Where was traffic affected?
The reported closure was on the Mitchell Freeway northbound at Ocean Reef Road. Police diverted traffic, and Main Roads advised drivers to take an alternative route. The report does not give a reopening time or name a specific detour route, so it does not establish how long the disruption lasted.
What is confirmed—and what is not?
- Confirmed in PerthNow’s report: a van fire near the Hodges Drive exit, three firefighting crews, the reported containment and extinguishing times, and a northbound closure at Ocean Reef Road with traffic diversion.
