Wrench announced on September 15, 2020, that it had acquired Lemon Squad, adding mobile pre-purchase vehicle inspections to its mobile repair and maintenance business. The move connected two different stages of owning a vehicle: assessing a used car before purchase and arranging service after purchase. The announcement did not disclose the acquisition price or other transaction terms.
What Wrench acquired—and why
Lemon Squad provides on-site pre-purchase inspections: an inspector travels to a vehicle and assesses its condition for a prospective buyer. Wrench, meanwhile, offered mobile maintenance and repair. Bringing the businesses together gave Wrench a way to serve customers earlier in the vehicle ownership process, before a used vehicle changes hands.
In its September 15, 2020 announcement, Wrench said Lemon Squad CEO Andy Dabbs would join as general manager of inspections. Wrench described the deal as an expansion of its service offering, not as a replacement for Lemon Squad’s direct customer channel.
Wrench co-founder and CEO Ed Petersen said the inspection service would let the company offer on-site assessments alongside maintenance and repair. In contemporaneous coverage, Petersen also said that an inspection by a certified mechanic could help consumers and businesses make better-informed decisions. Those were company statements about the rationale for the deal, not independent evidence that an inspection guarantees a good purchase.

What the announcement said about scale and scheduling
Wrench’s 2020 announcement said Lemon Squad had a network of 2,800 inspectors. That is a company-reported figure from the time of the acquisition, not a verified current network count. The release also described a 24–48-hour interval for the inspection visit and report at that time; it should not be read as a current turnaround guarantee.
At announcement, Wrench said customers and fleet operators would be able to schedule an on-site inspection through the Wrench mobile app, while customers could continue to contact Lemon Squad directly. The release does not establish that every channel or timing detail remains available today.

How Lemon Squad fits into Wrench’s current offering
Wrench’s current service page identifies Lemon Squad as a Wrench subsidiary and presents inspection services alongside mobile mechanic work. The page lists inspections for standard, exotic, and classic vehicles, motorcycles, commercial trucks, vans and trailers, and recreational vehicles such as motorhomes and campervans. Categories and availability can change, so check the current service page for the vehicle type and location you need.
The business relationship has also included distribution through other companies. On February 22, 2024, PrivateAuto announced that buyers or sellers using its private-vehicle marketplace app could order a Lemon Squad inspection. That announcement described a report covering exterior and interior condition, mechanical issues, a road test, tire condition and photos, and called it a 78-point inspection. These are details in the 2024 announcement, not confirmation of the current report format or ongoing marketplace availability.

What a pre-purchase inspection can—and cannot—tell you
Wrench’s terms describe the inspection as being based on what a technician can see and hear. That makes it a useful condition assessment, but not a guarantee or a substitute for every other form of due diligence.
- Visibility affects the result. Poor weather or lighting, and a vehicle that is not clean, can limit what the technician can assess.
- It is not a full underbody examination. The terms say the technician does not put the vehicle on a lift, though floor jacks may be used.
- It is not typically a diagnostic scan. Diagnostic equipment is not typically used, so the inspection should not be treated as a comprehensive diagnostic workup.
- It does not verify identity or history. An inspector may identify the VIN, but the terms say the service does not check VIN authenticity, vehicle history or title.
- It is not a government inspection. Wrench says its service is not equivalent to a state inspection or smog test.
For a buyer, the report can help identify visible or observable issues to discuss with the seller or a mechanic. It cannot establish that a vehicle has a clean title, will pass a state or emissions inspection, or is free of hidden defects.

Should you get an inspection before buying a used car?
A pre-purchase inspection is worth considering when you need an independent look at a used vehicle before committing to buy it. It is especially useful as one part of a broader decision: review the vehicle’s history separately, confirm title details through appropriate channels, and follow up on concerning findings with a qualified mechanic. The inspection’s visual and mechanical observations can inform that process, but its stated scope matters when deciding what questions remain unanswered.
