A crash was reported on the Mitchell Freeway northbound at Vincent Street in West Leederville at about 3:30pm on Thursday, 27 March 2025. PerthNow reported that the left emergency lane was blocked while towing services worked to remove vehicles. This is a report of a past incident, not a live traffic alert.
What happened on the Mitchell Freeway?
PerthNow’s report, published at 3:44pm on 27 March 2025, said the collision was first reported at approximately 3:30pm that afternoon. The crash was northbound at Vincent Street in West Leederville.
The report said the left emergency lane was blocked as towing services worked to remove vehicles. Main Roads WA urged motorists to exercise “extreme caution,” according to PerthNow, because people involved in the crash were outside their vehicles.
What is known about the disruption?
The blocked emergency lane and vehicle-removal work are the reported reasons for congestion. The article does not quantify the queue or delay, and it does not say when the lane reopened or traffic returned to normal.

What the report does not establish
- The cause of the collision.
- The exact number of vehicles involved.
- Whether anyone was injured.
- When the obstruction cleared.
PerthNow also referred to a separate earlier four-car crash on the Kwinana Freeway near Mill Point Road in South Perth. That incident was reported cleared by 3:40pm; its vehicle count and clearance status do not apply to the Mitchell Freeway crash.
Later road changes are separate from the 2025 crash
Main Roads WA’s project page, last updated 21 September 2026, describes the operational southbound Smart Freeway between Hester Avenue and Vincent Street. It uses ramp signals, sensors, CCTV and electronic gantries to manage traffic and display road conditions and lane information. The WA Road Safety Commission says fixed safety cameras at Mitchell Freeway and Vincent Street began operating on 1 June 2026, after the crash reported in March 2025. The cameras detect seatbelt and mobile-phone offences, as well as speeding; they should not be understood as having caused or recorded the earlier collision.
