Henderson Field on Midway Atoll is not a scheduled passenger airport, but it is listed as a possible emergency diversion point for some transpacific flights. The FAA has been weighing whether to fund major repairs and retain the airfield’s role as an alternate; the sources reviewed do not report a final decision, funded project, or closure date.

Why an airport without scheduled flights matters

Henderson Field, also called Midway Atoll Airport (MDY/PMDY), lies about 1,300 miles northwest of Honolulu, according to ABC News. Its importance is not passenger volume. Its position in the North Pacific can give flight planners another place for an aircraft to divert if it cannot continue along its planned route.

For some extended-range twin-engine operations, route planning must account for suitable diversion airports within the applicable approved diversion-time limits. That is the practical relevance of ETOPS—standards for extended-range twin-engine operations—in this story. The Airline Dispatchers Federation (ADF), an organization advocating to retain Midway’s role, says FAA guidance uses a 180-minute maximum for the operations it discusses. That figure is not a complete description of every ETOPS approval or operation. ADF’s explanation describes the planning context.

What is at risk—and what has not been decided

ABC News reported in October 2026 that Henderson Field’s infrastructure is deteriorating and cited an estimated repair need exceeding $100 million. The work described includes runway milling and repaving, as well as seawall repairs. That is a reported estimate, not an approved budget, signed contract, or confirmed project scope. ABC News and Aviation International News describe the FAA as considering the airfield’s future and whether to fund rehabilitation.

The question is whether the FAA will support repairs and keep Midway available as an alternate. The published accounts do not establish that the FAA has chosen to close the airport, that repair funding has been approved, or when any change would take effect. The potential loss under discussion is Midway’s availability for flight planning, not the end of a scheduled passenger service that does not operate there.

How many flights use Midway in planning?

Airline figures cited by ABC News describe flights for which Midway is a potential alternate—not aircraft that actually landed there. The distinction matters: an alternate airport can be valuable even when a flight reaches its destination without needing to divert.

Actual diversions are a different measure. ADF says its review of the docket records 11 diversions into PMDY between 2003 and 2021, including at least four Part 121 airline flights carrying more than 800 passengers and crew combined. That count is ADF’s account of the docket, not an independent verification of the underlying filings. ADF

What could change for transpacific flights?

If Midway were no longer available as an alternate, airlines might need to alter routes or operating plans, accept different diversion options, or reassess whether some routes remain practical. United has warned of possible operational and economic consequences, including potential route cuts; those are the airline’s assessments of a hypothetical loss, not evidence of current cancellations or fare increases. Alaska has said Midway can be used when other alternates are unavailable because of conditions such as volcanic ash or rocket launches. ABC News

Other airports named in stakeholder comments include Wake Island, Eareckson Air Station, and Majuro. Their existence does not establish that they can replace Midway in every case. An alternate’s usefulness depends on the route, weather, availability, access, and whether it fits the relevant operational limits. Boeing and airline filings summarized by Aero South Pacific argue that the other options do not provide equivalent coverage in all scenarios; a complete, independently verified airport-by-airport comparison is not available in the cited material.

Why infrequent diversions can still justify an alternate

Emergency planning is designed for events that are unusual but consequential. Airlines for America, quoted by ABC News, argued: “Although diversions to MDY are infrequent, the airport’s value should not be measured by frequency of diversions alone.” The organization also described Midway as redundancy in a remote operating environment and referred to “low-probability, high-consequence events.” ABC News

That is the central trade-off: maintaining a remote airfield may require substantial investment despite limited routine use, while losing it could remove one contingency option from some North Pacific flight plans. The available evidence supports the importance airlines and industry groups assign to that option; it does not settle the FAA’s funding decision or establish what any particular route would do if Midway were removed.
