The 2014 Ford Expedition is the final model year with a factory V8: a 5.4-liter engine rated for 87-octane gasoline or E-85. It can be a good used buy for someone who specifically wants a full-size V8 SUV, but the badge alone is no guarantee of a bargain or a trouble-free vehicle. Its price, service history and inspection results should decide the purchase. The title’s 2025 framing is outdated; this article is current to October 4, 2026, and no current market valuation is established here.
Which Ford Expedition was the last one with a V8?
The 2014 model year was the last Expedition with a factory V8. Ford’s 2014 owner’s guide identifies the engine as a 5.4-liter V8; the model history records the switch to a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 for 2015 (Ford Expedition model history). That makes a 2014 the one to consider if having a V8 is central to your choice—not necessarily the best Expedition for every buyer.

What does the 2014 Expedition’s V8 require?
Ford specifies a 5.4-liter engine with 330 cubic inches of displacement. The owner’s guide lists a minimum fuel rating of 87 octane or E-85. These are factory specifications, not evidence of a reliability rate or a promise about the condition of a particular used vehicle.

Oil specification and capacity
For the 2014 Expedition, Ford specifies SAE 5W-20 Motorcraft oil or an equivalent, with a capacity of 7.0 quarts (6.6 liters). Confirm the vehicle’s model year and engine, then consult the correct owner’s guide before buying oil or other service parts. Ford’s specification is not confirmation that any particular product listing or retailer offer is available.

When is a 2014 Expedition a good used buy?
It may suit a buyer who values the V8 configuration and is comfortable owning an older full-size SUV. Whether an individual example is worth buying depends on its asking price, service records and condition, as well as the buyer’s needs. No current transaction prices, fuel-cost comparison or controlled reliability ranking is established here, so a universal bargain claim would be misleading.
When comparing candidates, consider their documented maintenance, mileage and use, inspection findings, trim and equipment, drivetrain, local asking prices and completed recall work. These are practical comparison points, not proof that one trim or mileage threshold is universally best.

What to check before buying
- Review service records. Ask for receipts and discuss engine and transmission maintenance with the seller. A 2026 CarScout buyer guide likewise emphasizes maintenance records, but it is buying advice—not an official reliability study (CarScout’s used Expedition buyer guide).
- Arrange an independent inspection. Have a qualified shop assess the specific vehicle before purchase. Use its findings alongside the service history and asking price rather than relying on the model year or V8 badge as a proxy for condition.
- Check recalls by VIN. Enter the exact vehicle identification number in NHTSA’s recall lookup and confirm that any unrepaired campaign has been addressed. NHTSA distinguishes this VIN-specific check from general model-level information; the cited guidance does not establish a recall count for 2014 Expeditions.
- Verify equipment before ordering parts or fluids. Confirm the engine and equipment by VIN, then use the correct year’s owner’s guide for specifications and fitment.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The factory guide establishes the 2014 Expedition’s engine, fuel and oil specifications. It does not establish how reliable every surviving vehicle is, how long one will last, or what a fair asking price is in your area. The model-history page corroborates the engine change for 2015, while the secondary CarScout guide offers maintenance-record advice rather than a measured reliability result. Base a decision on the individual vehicle and current local comparisons, not an unsupported lifespan, failure-rate or bargain claim.

- Experience an Obvious Difference: Whether you are noticing a delay in acceleration, less than average gas mileage or own a higher mileage vehicle, our Max Thrust engine air filters will provide a clear and cost effective upgrade over stock performance
- Trap 2X Dirt vs. Standard Air Filters: Our unique Hex-D pleat design creates maximum holding capacity for trapping unwanted dirt and debris without compromising airflow like standard air filters thanks to multiple layers of progressively finer filter media that allows air to flow freely even when the filter is dirty
- Increased Power and Mileage up to 15K Miles: Deficient airflow can cause your engine to work twice as hard to suck in the minimum amount of air it needs to perform regularly, resulting in poorer gas mileage and lower power efficiency; Max Thrust air filters are designed to give your engine a break by delivering as much clean air as it needs to perform optimally up to 15K miles
- Do It Yourself: Replacement for Expedition (2007-23), F-150 (2009-23), F-250 Super Duty 6.8L V10 (2008-10), F-250 Super Duty 5.4L V8 (2008-10), F-250 Super Duty 6.2L V8 (2011-16), F-350 Super Duty 6.8L V10 (2008-10), F-350 Super Duty 5.4L V8 (2008-10), F-350 Super Duty 6.2L V8 (2011-16), Navigator (2007-23), make sure to enter your year, make and model above to check fitment; the engine air filter is an easy replacement that can save you money at the repair shop
