If cargo space is your priority, compare SUVs by the seat row that remains in use—not by a single maximum-volume number. The currently verified figures identify useful differences between the Chevrolet Traverse, Hyundai Palisade and Honda Passport, but they do not support an honest, like-for-like ranking of ten SUVs. The guide below shows what the published measurements mean, which additional models deserve a closer look, and how to verify that a vehicle will carry your actual gear.
What “cargo space matters most” should mean
Cargo capacity is not one number. A three-row SUV can advertise a large maximum volume with both rear rows folded, yet leave little room behind the third row when seven passengers are aboard. A two-row SUV may offer a more useful everyday compartment for five people, even though its maximum figure cannot be compared directly with a three-row vehicle’s behind-third-row measurement.

Use three measurements for a three-row SUV:
- Behind the third row: the space available with every seat occupied.
- Behind the second row: the third row folded, which is often the practical family-hauling configuration.
- Behind the first row: the maximum listed volume with the rear seats folded.
For a two-row SUV, compare the space behind the second row and the maximum volume with that row folded. Also check the physical shape of the opening, floor length, wheel-well width and load-floor height. A box that fits by volume alone may not fit through the liftgate or between the wheel wells.

The figures in this table are manufacturer-published capacities, not independent measurements. Automakers can use different measurement methods, so the numbers should be treated as model-specific information rather than a cross-brand laboratory ranking.

| Model and model-year context | Rows | Behind third row | Behind second row | Behind first row | What is established |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Chevrolet Traverse | Three | Not stated | 56.6 cu. ft. | 98 cu. ft. | Chevrolet comparison data supplies the second-row and first-row figures; no behind-third-row number is provided there. |
| 2026 Hyundai Palisade | Three | Not stated | 46.3 cu. ft. | 86.7 cu. ft. | The same Chevrolet comparison page lists these Palisade capacities; its measurement method may not match every competitor’s. |
| Honda Passport | Two | Not applicable | 44 cu. ft. | 83.8 cu. ft. on some trims | Honda’s page opened with 2027 specifications, while the search result showed 2026 information. Confirm the model year and trim before relying on the maximum figure. |
The Traverse and Palisade figures are both behind the second row, making that particular comparison useful. The Passport’s second-row figure is also informative for a two-row buyer, but it does not answer the same question as a three-row SUV’s behind-third-row capacity. The published data does not establish a complete set of matching measurements for ten vehicles.
What the numbers imply for real use
When all seats must remain available
Families who routinely carry six or seven people should insist on a measured behind-third-row compartment. Neither the cited Traverse nor Palisade comparison supplies that number, so a buyer should inspect the vehicle in person with the third row upright and bring the items that normally travel there. A stroller, sports bags or a large grocery load can expose a limitation that a maximum-volume specification hides.
When the third row is occasional
If the third row is used only for occasional passengers, behind-second-row capacity is usually the most useful planning figure. The Traverse’s published figure is larger than the Palisade’s on that page, but different measurement conventions and trim configurations mean it should not be treated as a universal ranking. Verify the floor length and width as well as the stated volume.

When you carry bulky equipment
Maximum volume matters for bicycles, flat-pack furniture, camping equipment and renovation supplies. Measure the longest uninterrupted floor length with the front seats in a normal driving position. Check whether the second-row seats fold flat, whether a center section can be opened for long items, and whether the liftgate opening is tall and wide enough for the object you intend to load.
Other midsize three-row SUVs worth checking
An Associated Press article published through Edmunds on October 13, 2026, names five recommended midsize three-row SUVs: the Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, Toyota Grand Highlander, Ford Explorer and Volkswagen Atlas. That editorial selection is useful as a shopping shortlist, not as a cargo-space ranking.
| Model | Configuration | Cargo information established in the cited article | What to verify yourself |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hyundai Palisade | Three-row | Included among the five recommendations; the manufacturer figures are shown above. | Behind-third-row volume, opening dimensions and trim-specific seat operation. |
| Kia Telluride | Three-row | Recommended by the article; no matching capacity figures are established here. | All three row positions, floor length and usable width. |
| Toyota Grand Highlander | Three-row | Described as having substantial maximum cargo space; no standardized figures are established here. | Capacity with the third row up and the exact seat configuration you need. |
| Ford Explorer | Three-row | The article notes a smaller cargo area relative to its utility needs; no comparable measurements are established here. | Whether the behind-third-row area meets your daily load requirement. |
| Volkswagen Atlas | Three-row | Described as having substantial maximum cargo space; no standardized figures are established here. | Liftgate opening, second-row folding arrangement and real-world loading height. |
Because the available figures do not cover every seat position for these models, it would be misleading to assign them places one through ten. Treat each as a vehicle to measure and test rather than accepting a generalized “largest cargo area” label.

Two rows or three: choose the layout before the vehicle
Choose two rows when
- You normally carry up to five occupants and want a consistently large, unobstructed cargo area.
- You prefer a lower lift-over height or simpler seat-folding arrangement.
- You rarely need a passenger row behind the second row.
The Passport illustrates this approach: its cargo figures apply to a two-row layout, so the entire rear compartment is available behind the second row when passengers are seated there. Confirm whether the quoted maximum applies to your trim and model year.
Choose three rows when
- You regularly transport more than five people.
- You need the flexibility to carry passengers and cargo at the same time.
- You can accept that cargo room changes substantially depending on whether the third row is upright or folded.
Do not buy a three-row SUV solely for its maximum number if the third row will be occupied most days. The behind-third-row test is the one that matches that use case.
A practical cargo-space test before you buy
- List your real loads. Record the dimensions of the stroller, pet crate, musical instrument, cooler, tool case, sports equipment or mobility aid that you carry most often.
- Decide which seats must stay usable. Mark one scenario with all passengers seated, another with the third row folded, and a third with the rear seats folded.
- Measure the vehicle opening. Check liftgate height and width, the narrowest point between wheel wells, floor length to the seatback and the height from the ground to the load floor.
- Operate every seat. Fold and restore the second- and third-row seats yourself. Look for straps, power controls, head-restraint interference and whether the folded seat creates a step.
- Load a representative object. Bring a tape measure or the actual item, with the seller’s permission. Confirm that it can enter through the opening, not merely fit inside on paper.
- Check passenger comfort after loading. Set the front seats for the tallest regular driver and passenger, then see how much usable length remains behind them.
- Repeat the test on the exact trim. Spare-tire placement, power-folding hardware, second-row captain’s chairs and adjustable floors can alter usable space.
Model-year and trim details that can change the answer
Specifications must be tied to a model year. Honda’s current Passport specifications page displayed 2027 information when opened, while the search result that led to it showed 2026 figures. That mismatch is a warning to confirm the year shown on the page, the vehicle identification information on the window sticker and the trim you are considering.

- Easy to Install: Car side seat gap filler is easy to install, simply insert it into the gap between the seat and the center console, gap seat filler for car can fit tightly without affecting the normal adjustment of the seat and the use of the seat belt
- Premium Material: Crafted from premium EVA material, our car seat side gap filler boasts a combination of wear-resistant, softness&durability. Maintenance is effortless, simply rinse and wipe to quickly clean the dust and debris in corners and crevices
Trim can matter as well. A spare tire, audio equipment, power seat mechanism or different second-row arrangement may change the maximum listed volume. Honda’s page indicates that some Passport trims have slightly different maximum figures, so do not assume one specification applies across the range.
For the Traverse and Palisade, keep the model year attached to every capacity figure. A mid-cycle update, seat redesign or change in measurement convention can make an older brochure unsuitable for a newer vehicle.
How to compare cargo usability beyond cubic feet
- Opening geometry: A wide, square aperture is easier for crates and boxes than a sharply raked opening.
- Wheel-well intrusion: Measure the narrowest width at floor level, not just the maximum width higher up.
- Load-floor height: A high bumper or deep cargo well increases lifting effort, especially for heavy equipment.
- Seat-folding surface: A flat floor is more useful for long or sliding cargo than a steep step between rows.
- Under-floor storage: Check whether it is occupied by a spare tire, subwoofer or charging hardware.
- Tie-downs and outlets: Secure points and a power outlet can matter more than a few additional cubic feet.
- Visibility and access: A power liftgate, adjustable opening height and low threshold help when the vehicle is used repeatedly.
Protecting the cargo area after you choose
A cargo liner can protect carpeting from mud, spills, pet hair and leaking containers, but it must be matched to the vehicle’s model year, trim and seat configuration. A liner designed for a two-row Passport will not fit a three-row SUV, and a piece designed for a five-seat setup may interfere with a folded or raised third row. Check that the liner leaves seat latches, tie-downs, emergency-release handles and liftgate seals accessible. Since no specific product listing or fitment has been verified here, use the vehicle manufacturer’s dimensions and the seller’s exact fitment chart before ordering.

Common buying mistakes and fixes
Comparing maximum volume with behind-third-row volume
Problem: A vehicle looks enormous in a brochure but cannot hold your normal load with all passengers aboard.
Fix: Require a behind-third-row measurement or conduct an in-person test with the third row raised.
Mixing two-row and three-row measurements
Problem: A two-row maximum is compared with a three-row behind-second-row or behind-third-row number.
Fix: Label every figure by seat position before drawing a conclusion.
Assuming every trim has the same capacity
Problem: Seat hardware and spare-tire arrangements reduce usable room.
Fix: Test the exact trim and confirm the specification sheet for that model year.

Trusting a single published measurement across brands
Problem: Different manufacturers may calculate cargo volume differently.
Fix: Use manufacturer figures to narrow the list, then use identical physical measurements and your own cargo items for the final decision.
A sensible shortlist for cargo-focused shoppers
Start with the Traverse and Palisade if you need three rows and want published behind-second-row and maximum figures to compare. Add the Passport if two rows meet your seating needs and you value a dedicated five-passenger cargo layout. Then inspect the Telluride, Grand Highlander, Explorer and Atlas as additional three-row candidates identified by the AP/Edmunds recommendation, but demand the missing row-specific measurements before treating any of them as a cargo leader.
This approach is more reliable than selecting a supposed top ten from mismatched numbers. It connects the vehicle to the way you actually use it: passengers aboard, seats folded, objects loaded and the exact trim parked in your driveway.
