In an Edmunds comparison of 2025 SUVs published by the Associated Press in 2024, the Chevrolet Traverse led the five vehicles covered with 22.9 cubic feet behind row three. The evidence supports a useful comparison of those five models, plus the Honda Pilot’s separately published 2026 specifications; it does not support a verified ten-SUV ranking.
Which midsize SUV has the most cargo room behind the third row?
Among the five 2025 models in Edmunds’ family-SUV comparison, the Chevrolet Traverse had the most reported cargo space behind the third row, at 22.9 cubic feet. The comparison was published via the Associated Press in 2024. It is a source-published figure, not the result of a shared independent test, and should not be treated as a guarantee that every trim or configuration has identical space. Read the Edmunds comparison published by AP.

These figures compare different vehicles’ published specifications; they do not establish that each manufacturer used the same measuring protocol. Treat small differences as a guide to shortlist candidates, not as a controlled test of how many bags each SUV will hold.
What cargo space means when your family uses every row
Third-row-up capacity is the most relevant number when passengers ride in all rows and luggage has to fit behind them. It is not interchangeable with cargo room behind the second row or maximum cargo volume, which require folding seats and therefore reduce passenger capacity.

With all three rows in use
Start with the third-row-up figure, then consider the actual items you carry: suitcases, a stroller, sports equipment, or groceries. Volume alone cannot confirm whether a bulky item will pass through the hatch or fit the load floor. The available comparison does not establish hatch-opening dimensions, floor shape, or item-by-item fit across these models, so check the exact vehicle in person if those details matter.
With the third row folded
Honda’s official 2026 Pilot specifications list 48.5 cubic feet standard behind the second row, with a trim- and configuration-dependent maximum of 59.5–60.1 cubic feet. These are separate from the space available with all rows occupied. See Honda’s 2026 Pilot specifications.

With both rear rows folded
Edmunds reported a 98-cubic-foot maximum for the 2025 Traverse and 96.8 cubic feet for the 2025 Atlas in its 2024 comparison. Toyota separately lists 97.5 cubic feet maximum for the 2025 Grand Highlander LE FWD and 96.8 cubic feet for the 2025 Atlas SE FWD. Toyota’s figures are specific to those named configurations, not universal values for every trim. See Toyota’s 2025 Grand Highlander and Atlas comparison.
A maximum-volume figure describes a seats-folded configuration, not a family travelling with passengers in all rows. Do not use it to decide whether the SUV can carry both a full passenger load and the family’s luggage.

How the Honda Pilot compares—and why trim matters
Honda’s official 2026 Pilot specifications list 18.6 cubic feet of standard cargo volume behind the third row. The published maximum behind that row ranges from 21.8 to 22.4 cubic feet depending on trim and configuration. Honda also lists the second-row-up and maximum figures separately, so check the relevant specification row for the exact trim rather than treating one Pilot number as applying across the lineup.
The Pilot figures are official specifications for the 2026 model, while the five-model comparison above covers 2025 vehicles and was published by Edmunds via AP in 2024. They are useful reference points, but the different model years and sources do not make this a like-for-like ranking.

- Passengers in all rows most trips: Prioritize third-row-up cargo capacity. In the cited five-model comparison, the Traverse has the highest reported figure.
- Third row used occasionally: Compare both third-row-up space and the capacity with that row folded. Decide how often you are willing to give up those seats for luggage.
- Bulky equipment or long trips: Bring representative items to a test fit, or check model- and trim-specific opening and load-floor dimensions. Published volume alone does not prove a particular item will fit.
- Skis or other gear that will not fit inside: A roof cargo box may be an option, but confirm crossbar requirements, roof-load limits, hatch clearance, and the vehicle’s safety instructions for the exact SUV before buying or loading one. No specific carrier fit or roof rating is established by the figures here.
- Comparing trims: Verify model year, trim, drivetrain, spare-tire arrangement, and seat layout against the manufacturer’s specification. Cargo figures can vary by configuration.
Why this is not a ranked list of ten SUVs
The available comparable evidence covers five 2025 models, with separate official specifications for the 2026 Pilot and selected manufacturer figures for the Grand Highlander and Atlas. It does not verify comparable cargo measurements for ten vehicles, nor a common test method across manufacturers. A ten-place ranking would imply a level of coverage and consistency these figures do not provide.
