There is no reliable, like-for-like dataset that proves a strict ranking of the 10 fastest Yamaha motorcycles ever. The figures available combine an instrumented magazine test, Yamaha development history and secondary estimates, so they should not be treated as equivalent. This historical comparison identifies 10 notable high-performance Yamahas and makes clear what each speed claim can—and cannot—tell you.

How to read this list

“Fastest” can mean a manufacturer’s stated figure, a speed recorded in a named test, an anecdotal speedometer reading or an estimate repeated by a secondary publication. Those are different kinds of evidence. Yamaha’s official materials here do not publish a comparable top-speed table covering these models, and the available sources do not establish an exact speed-sorted top ten.

The entries below are therefore a guide to notable candidates, not a verified rank order. A figure appears only where the cited source supports one; where it does not, the entry explains the model’s relevance without inventing a number.

Ten Yamaha models associated with high speed

Yamaha YZF-R1 and R1M

The R1 is the clearest performance flagship in Yamaha’s R-Series lineage. Yamaha described the 2015 R1 and R1M as “Designed to be the fastest machines on the circuit,” referring to their circuit-focused design intent—not certifying a road-legal top-speed record. The 2015 Europe-market launch release listed 200 hp for those models. Yamaha’s 2014 launch release and R-Series history provide the lineage and launch context.

#1 Best Overall
Venom X22RR 250cc EFI Fuel-Injected 6-Speed Motorcycle, Street & Highway Use Fuel Efficient Sport Bike, 300cc, Racing Street Design with Digital Dash Red Frame Gold Shocks
  • Engine Type: Single Cylinder, 4-Stroke, Air-Cooled, Fuel-Injected – Built for durability and consistent performance.
  • Fuel System: Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) – Optimized fuel delivery for maximum efficiency.
  • Transmission: 6-Speed Manual Sport Clutch – Seamless gear shifts for ultimate control.
  • Brakes: Front & Rear Hydraulic Disc – Precision stopping power for enhanced safety.
  • Weight: 295 lbs (Net) | 365 lbs (Gross) – Lightweight yet robust for peak performance.

Yamaha’s account of R1 development recalls a digital speedometer reaching 291 km/h. That is a development-story speedometer reading, not a standardized independent production-bike test, so it should not be read as a measured maximum comparable with a magazine test. Yamaha’s R1 development account describes the anecdote.

Yamaha YZF-R7 (OW-02)

The original 1999 YZF-R7, also known as the OW-02, was a 750cc supersport and homologation-oriented machine in the R-Series lineage. Yamaha’s collection entry establishes its identity and displacement. Jalopnik’s secondary ranking claims 174 mph for the OW-02; that figure is a publication-attributed estimate, not a Yamaha-certified maximum or a result shown to share test conditions with other entries. Jalopnik’s ranking does not provide a standardized basis for comparing every listed model.

Yamaha FZR1000 EXUP

The FZR1000 EXUP appears among the candidates in Jalopnik’s secondary ranking. The sources available here do not establish a comparable, attributable top-speed test figure for it. Its presence on a list is not enough to assign a definitive maximum or place it precisely against later R-series models. Jalopnik’s ranking is the relevant secondary context.

Yamaha YZF1000R Thunderace

The Thunderace appears in both Motorcyclist’s performance archive and Jalopnik’s ranking. Jalopnik claims 165 mph, but that should be labeled as its reported estimate rather than treated as a controlled or manufacturer-certified result. The archive offers performance context, but the sources here do not provide a uniform test maximum suitable for comparing it with every other Yamaha on this list. See Motorcyclist’s performance data archive and Jalopnik’s ranking.

Yamaha FZ1

The FZ1 is included in Motorcyclist’s performance archive, making it a relevant high-performance Yamaha beyond the fully faired supersports. The archive supplies performance data and test context, but it does not establish a comparable maximum speed for every motorcycle represented. No specific top-speed number is assigned here. Motorcyclist’s archive.

Yamaha YZF-R6

The R6 belongs to Yamaha’s R-Series lineage, but displacement or gearing alone cannot establish a model’s top speed. The available sources do not support assigning it a comparable maximum figure here. Its significance in this comparison is as a dedicated supersport, not as a speed claim inferred from its class. See Yamaha’s R-Series history and Motorcyclist’s performance archive.

Rank #4
HHH 250cc Street Bike GTX 250 EFI Motorcycle Fuel Injection Manual 6 Speed for Adult and Youth (Blue)
  • Entry-Level Sport Bike Design: The HHH Upgraded 250cc Motorcycle GTX 250 with EFI features a 6 speed manual transmission, hydraulic disc brakes (dual front), and 17-inch wheels with street tires
  • Altitude Adaptability with EFI: Electronic Fuel Injection automatically compensates for changes in altitude by sensing air temperature and density, eliminating the need to manually adjust carburetors jetting at different elevations
  • Enhanced Throttle Response: By delivering fuel directly into the combustion chamber in response to the rider's input, the EFI system eliminates throttle lag associated with carburetors, resulting in smoother and more instantaneous acceleration with dual front headlights and sporty styling
  • Zongshen Engine with EFI Technology: HHH GTX 250 is powered by a Zongshen-brand engine and uses electronic fuel injection for better performance and fuel economy with high power output
  • Easier Starting System: The EFI system optimizes fuel delivery for ambient conditions, ensuring reliable and easy engine starts, especially in cold weather, without the need for a manual choke

Yamaha FJR1300

The FJR1300 shows why a high-speed Yamaha list need not consist only of race-derived sportbikes: it is a sport-tourer built for a different blend of performance and long-distance use. Cycle World’s performance table reports a top speed of 146.2 mph for its 2008 FJR1300 test. That is a named publication’s test result for that model year, not a claim for every FJR1300 generation or a directly comparable factory figure. Cycle World’s performance table.

Yamaha V-Max

The V-Max is another distinct-use entry: a powerful cruiser rather than a supersport. It appears in Motorcyclist’s performance archive, which provides useful test context, but the sources here do not supply a uniform maximum-speed figure that can be ranked against the sportbikes. See Motorcyclist’s archive.

Yamaha MT-10

The MT-10 is a naked-bike candidate in secondary coverage, but a listicle figure should not be mistaken for a tested maximum. Yamaha’s U.S. specifications page for the 2026 YZF-R1 illustrates the distinction between official model specifications and published top-speed claims; it does not establish an MT-10 maximum. For a meaningful number, the exact market and model year need a source that states its method. Yamaha Motorsports USA’s 2026 YZF-R1 specifications and Jalopnik’s secondary ranking provide context, not a comparable MT-10 test result.

Yamaha MT-09

The MT-09 is also named in secondary speed-ranking coverage, but no comparable tested maximum is established by the cited sources. Do not infer a top speed from engine size, gearing or the number attached to another generation: specifications and restrictions can vary by year and market. Jalopnik’s ranking is secondary context rather than a standardized test record.

Which speed figure is strongest evidence?

Evidence Example How to interpret it
Named magazine test 146.2 mph for Cycle World’s 2008 FJR1300 test A published test result tied to a specific model year and publisher. It is the clearest instrumented-test figure identified here, but does not create a ten-model comparison.
Manufacturer development anecdote 291 km/h on an R1 digital speedometer A speedometer reading recalled in Yamaha’s development history; not a standardized independent production test.
Secondary ranking estimate 174 mph for the OW-02 R7 and 165 mph for the Thunderace, as reported by Jalopnik Attribute the claims to that publisher. Its figures are not shown to share a common method or test conditions.
Manufacturer performance statement 2015 R1/R1M described as designed to be the fastest on circuit A statement of design intent and track positioning, not a road top-speed measurement.

Why model year and use matter

A top-speed comparison can shift with generation, market, electronic restrictions and test conditions. A homologation-oriented 750cc supersport, a liter-class superbike, a naked MT, a touring FJR and a V-Max cruiser also serve different purposes. Fair comparisons need an exact model year and market, the source and method behind the number, and an understanding of the bike’s category and bodywork—not just a speed figure stripped of context.

For current specifications, check the page for the precise model and market rather than applying a historical figure to a present-day bike. Yamaha’s U.S. 2026 YZF-R1 specification page, for example, publishes specifications but no maximum speed.
