Midsize SUV Maintenance Costs for 2025: What the Figures Show and Why There Is No Verified Top 10

No source available for this article supports a verified ranking of ten 2025 midsize SUVs by maintenance cost, so we do not publish one. What the available sources do offer are a few specific cost figures, each measuring something different. This article explains what those figures mean, why they cannot be placed in a single ordered list, and how to compare midsize SUVs on the same basis when you are shopping.

All figures below are U.S. estimates. Each one is tied to the source, the measure, and the vehicle years it covers.

The figures that exist, and what each one measures

Four sources supply the numbers. Two are from RepairPal, whose 2026 ratings page reports averages and a reliability list. Two are from CarEdge, whose model pages carry maintenance estimates. The table keeps each figure with its own definition, vehicle coverage, and time frame.

Figure Source What it measures Vehicles and model years covered Time frame
$410 per year (2025 Toyota Highlander) CarEdge, current 2025 Highlander model page (accessed 2026) Model-specific annual maintenance estimate 2025 Toyota Highlander First five years of new ownership
$573 per year (midsize SUV average) RepairPal, 2026 ratings page (accessed 2026) Annual cost of unscheduled repairs and maintenance Midsize SUVs across model years; RepairPal’s reliability dataset covers 2010 to 2019 model years One year
$489 per year (Toyota Highlander) RepairPal, 2026 ratings page (accessed 2026) Same annual repair measure, shown on its top-ten reliability list 2010 to 2019 model years One year
$607 per year (Subaru Outback) RepairPal, 2026 ratings page (accessed 2026) Same annual repair measure, shown on its top-ten reliability list 2010 to 2019 model years One year
$6,224 total (Toyota Highlander) CarEdge, Highlander maintenance page (accessed 2026) Ten-year maintenance and repair projection Model-year coverage not stated on the page Ten years
$7,881 total (Honda Pilot) CarEdge, Pilot maintenance page (accessed 2026) Ten-year maintenance and repair projection Model-year coverage not stated on the page Ten years
$8,633 total (Subaru Outback) CarEdge, Outback maintenance page (accessed 2026) Ten-year maintenance and repair projection Model-year coverage not stated on the page Ten years

Two of these figures are per year and four are cumulative or tied to a specific ownership window. A per-year figure cannot be compared directly with a ten-year total. The annual $410 figure is also not a ten-year total, even though it covers a multi-year period.

Why these figures cannot be ranked together

Three mismatches prevent the figures from forming a reliable top ten.

  • Different definitions of cost. RepairPal’s figures cover unscheduled repairs and maintenance. CarEdge’s estimates are model-specific projections of maintenance and repair. Neither source publishes a breakdown that lets a reader strip out scheduled items such as oil changes so the two can be matched.
  • Different time frames. RepairPal reports one-year averages. CarEdge’s Highlander figure covers the first five years of new ownership, and its other model figures are ten-year totals. Placing an annual number beside a decade-long total produces a comparison that favors whichever figure looks smaller.
  • Different vehicle cohorts. RepairPal’s reliability data covers 2010 to 2019 model years, which is a different group of vehicles from 2025 models. The CarEdge pages reviewed do not state the model years behind their ten-year numbers, so they cannot be confirmed as a 2025 comparison group either.

CarEdge describes its calculator as covering almost 300 vehicle models and notes that maintenance costs and the probability of a major repair both rise as a vehicle ages. That aging effect is one more reason a new-vehicle figure and a decade-old fleet average should not be read as equivalents.

The three models with usable figures

The sources support a closer look at three midsize SUVs. Each has at least one specific number, but none has a complete set of figures that would let it be ranked against the others.

Toyota Highlander

The Highlander has the most specific data of the three. CarEdge estimates $410 per year for a 2025 model during the first five years of new ownership, and projects $6,224 over ten years. RepairPal’s reliability list shows $489 per year for 2010 to 2019 Highlanders. Because these figures use different horizons and different model years, they are best read as consistent evidence of moderate, not high, expected upkeep, rather than as a precise cost.

Subaru Outback

CarEdge projects $8,633 over ten years for the Outback, the highest ten-year total among the three models. RepairPal lists $607 per year for 2010 to 2019 Outbacks, which is also the highest annual repair figure among the three models with RepairPal entries. Both sources point in the same direction, but neither is a 2025-model ranking, and the Outback’s ten-year total is not directly comparable with the Highlander’s because the model years behind each page are not stated.

Honda Pilot

The only figure available for the Pilot is CarEdge’s ten-year projection of $7,881. The sources reviewed do not supply a RepairPal annual figure for the Pilot, so it cannot be placed on the same scale as the Highlander or Outback. Its ten-year total sits between the other two, but a single projection with no stated model years is not enough to rank it.

Reliability is not the same as cost

RepairPal’s top-ten midsize SUV list is a reliability ranking, not a maintenance-cost ranking. RepairPal’s methodology page states:

“The Reliability Rating by RepairPal is a measurement of vehicle dependability based on the cost, frequency, and severity of unscheduled repairs and maintenance.”

That definition blends cost with how often repairs happen and how serious they are. A vehicle can rank well on reliability while still carrying an above-average repair bill on the occasions when something fails, and the reverse is also possible. When you read the RepairPal list, treat it as a dependability signal. Do not treat it as a dollar ranking.

How to compare midsize SUVs on the same basis

If you are choosing between midsize SUVs, you can build a fair comparison by holding every variable constant. Use the steps below.

  1. Pick one cost definition. Decide whether you want scheduled maintenance, unscheduled repairs, or both, and use only figures that report the same definition for every model you compare.
  2. Pick one time frame. Compare annual figures with annual figures and ten-year totals with ten-year totals. If the only available figure is for a shorter window, convert nothing; note the mismatch instead.
  3. Confirm the model year for each figure. A 2025 estimate and a 2010 to 2019 reliability average describe different vehicles. Check whether each page states the years it covers before you put two numbers side by side.
  4. Check whether the estimate includes scheduled items. Ask whether oil changes, tires, brakes, and fluids are counted, or whether the figure only reflects repairs that occur when something breaks.
  5. Look separately at the likelihood of a major repair. A low average can hide a rare but expensive failure, so check reliability data alongside cost estimates before deciding.
  6. Use CarEdge’s model maintenance estimator to check specific models you are considering. It produces a model-based outlook, which you can then test against the model year and time frame you actually plan to keep the vehicle.

Cost estimates from any source are projections, not guarantees. Actual upkeep depends on how the vehicle is driven, where it is driven, and how it is maintained. Treat every figure in this article as a starting point for your own comparison rather than a final answer.
