Toyota, Honda and Nissan dominate Japan’s car market, but a small group of specialist builders works alongside them. This guide covers four that their own official websites describe clearly: Mitsuoka, Takeoka Auto Craft, Aspark and Tommykaira. The original headline promised ten. We have kept the list to four because we could not confirm six more to the same standard, and a padded list would give you names you cannot check.
These four are not alike. Mitsuoka builds distinctive cars that are sold today. Takeoka makes one-seat minicars and compact mobility. Aspark promotes an electric hypercar. Tommykaira is known mainly for complete sports cars and tuned models whose current activity is unclear. “Lesser-known” here describes how little coverage these makers get, not how popular they are.
How the four makers differ
Before looking at each brand, it helps to separate four things that are easy to blur together: a marque that sells a full line of cars, a specialist builder that makes low-volume vehicles, a tuning brand that modifies existing cars, and a concept-stage or niche manufacturer. Each of the four sits in a different place on that spectrum. The table below compares them on the points that matter most to a buyer or enthusiast.
| Brand | Type of vehicle | Current lineup on official site | Scale and purpose | Where the company is based |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mitsuoka | Distinctively styled passenger cars, several based on other models | Yes, listed on the official lineup page | Small hand-production specialist beside Japan’s volume makers | Toyama Prefecture (production described as artisan, by hand) |
| Takeoka Auto Craft | One-seat 50cc minicars, small electric mobility, scooters | Products described as continuing; check model list for specifics | Very small factory, purpose-built compact transport | Toyama, founded 1982 |
| Aspark | Electric hypercar (Owl) | Owl promoted on official homepage; availability not stated here | Engineering-focused niche builder | Japan (production location not stated here) |
| Tommykaira | Complete and tuned sports cars | Not confirmed; historical models documented (M30, ZZ) | Specialist complete-car and tuning brand | Kyoto (Tomita Yume Koujou) |
Mitsuoka
Mitsuoka is the most current of the four. Its official English company page says its original cars are produced by hand by artisans at a small factory in Toyama Prefecture, and it describes the company as Japan’s tenth passenger-car manufacturer. That “tenth” designation comes from the company’s own description; the page does not say when the claim was recognized, so treat it as the company’s position rather than an independently verified ranking.
#1 Best Overall

- TAM24123
The company’s history page identifies the Zero-1 as its first original-brand model, apart from the engine. The same history makes clear that several Mitsuoka models are based on other vehicles, so the brand’s cars should not be read as entirely clean-sheet designs. The distinctiveness lies in styling and small-batch production rather than in building every component from scratch.
The current official lineup lists the following models: Viewt story, M55 RS, M55, Buddy, Ryugi EX, Ryugi Wagon EX, Viewt and Viewt nadeshiko. The lineup page displays yen prices. Those prices change, so check the current Japanese page directly rather than relying on a figure quoted in an article. If you need a rough sterling or dollar equivalent, use a dated exchange rate.

Takeoka Auto Craft
Takeoka Auto Craft is a very different kind of maker. Its homepage describes a small factory in Toyama, founded in 1982, that has designed and built one-seat 50cc minicars. The company says it continues to work on gasoline minicars, small electric mobility and scooters for older customers, and it describes its vehicles as hand-built.
Takeoka’s niche is purpose-specific, compact transport rather than sports or luxury cars. If you are looking for a particular vehicle, verify the current model on the official site before assuming it is available, because product offerings change. The company page is the right starting point: Takeoka Auto Craft official homepage.

Aspark
Aspark’s official homepage promotes the Owl as an electric hypercar and states that the company is based in Japan. That is what the official page establishes. It does not, in the material reviewed for this article, confirm the Owl’s performance figures, production location, availability, price or any record claims, and secondary coverage of those points should be checked against a dated primary source before you rely on it.
Keep two questions apart: where a company is based and where its vehicles are built. A Japan-based company does not automatically mean its cars are built in Japan. The company’s own site is here: Aspark official homepage.
Rank #4
- Plastic Model Kit-Assembly Required
- Glue and Paint sold separately
- Manufacturer Item #: 24145
Tommykaira
Tommykaira is the most historically documented of the four and the least clear about its present. The official brand page traces the name to Tomita Yume Koujou, a company in Kyoto. It says the brand released the M30 in 1987, a model based on the Nissan R31 Skyline. It says the original sports car, the ZZ, was announced in 1995 and that 206 were manufactured and sold. The page also mentions a successor, the ZZ II.
Those are historical facts from the brand’s own account. The page does not establish that the ZZ or M30 is in current production, so do not assume a present-day order process exists. Treat Tommykaira as a significant name in Japanese complete-car and tuning history, and check the Tommykaira official About page for anything more recent.

Because these makers are small and their lineups change, use this sequence before you act on any model name:
Quick Recap
- Open the brand’s official site and look for a lineup, models or products page. For Mitsuoka, that is the official lineup.
- Confirm the model appears on that page, not just in a news item, history page or gallery.
- For Mitsuoka prices, check the Japanese page and note the date. Convert any amount using a dated exchange rate.
- For Tommykaira or Aspark, treat historical or promotional mentions as information about the model, not evidence that it can be bought.
- Ask the company directly about availability in your country, since import rules and dealer networks are not covered by the pages reviewed here.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
