The aircraft weighed 155 tonnes, but the stunt did not mean the Touareg was rated to tow a 155-tonne trailer: Volkswagen listed the first-generation model’s maximum trailer weight as 3.5 tonnes, subject to a gradient qualification. The often-repeated Chevy C/K airplane-towing claim is not verified by the available sources.
What happened in the Touareg–747 demonstration?
Volkswagen’s 2023 retrospective says a Touareg V10 TDI towed a Boeing 747 in 2006. The company gives the aircraft’s weight as 155 tonnes. A separate Volkswagen historical feature places the demonstration at Dunsfold Aerodrome in England and describes it as a test of the powertrain and trailer hitch.
That is a manufacturer-reported demonstration, not an independently measured result established here. Volkswagen’s account supports the core claim that the vehicle moved the aircraft under the conditions of the stunt; it does not establish a repeatable towing capability for ordinary use.
Why the 155-tonne figure is not the Touareg’s towing capacity
The aircraft’s reported mass and a vehicle’s rated trailer weight are different measures. Volkswagen’s model-history page for the first-generation Touareg states a maximum trailer weight of 3.5 tonnes on a gradient up to twelve percent. That rating—not the mass of the aircraft in a demonstration—is the relevant manufacturer figure for ordinary trailer towing.

In a stunt, moving a heavy aircraft under prepared conditions is not equivalent to towing an equally heavy trailer on public roads. The demonstration should therefore be described as the Touareg moving a 155-tonne aircraft, not as the Touareg having a 155-tonne towing rating.
Does the Touareg make a practical airport tug?
No practical replacement claim is established. Volkswagen’s historical feature says the company could not confirm reports that airport operators ordered Touaregs to replace heavier ramp tractors. Moving an aircraft in a demonstration does not by itself show that a passenger SUV can perform routine ramp work or meet the operational requirements of an airport tug.

Boeing’s 747-8 airport planning document includes a ground-towing requirements section with charts for rubber-tired tow vehicles. It illustrates that aircraft ground towing is a distinct operational task; the document concerns the 747-8 and does not document the precise procedure used in the Touareg demonstration.
Did a Chevrolet C/K truck tow an airplane?
The Chevy C/K claim remains unverified. The available sources do not identify a C/K pickup, the aircraft involved, a date, or the conditions of such a tow. Without a credible account establishing those details, it should not be presented as a confirmed example alongside Volkswagen’s documented demonstration.

| Claim or figure | What the available source supports |
|---|---|
| Touareg and Boeing 747 | Volkswagen says a Touareg V10 TDI towed a 747 in 2006; its retrospective gives the aircraft’s weight as 155 tonnes. |
| Location and purpose | Volkswagen’s historical feature places the event at Dunsfold Aerodrome, England, and describes it as a powertrain and trailer-hitch test. |
| First-generation Touareg trailer rating | Volkswagen lists 3.5 tonnes maximum on a gradient up to twelve percent. |
| Chevrolet C/K airplane tow | Not established by the available sources; no truck configuration, aircraft, date, or conditions are identified. |
| Touareg as airport-tug replacement | Not confirmed by Volkswagen; the company says it could not confirm reports of airport operators ordering Touaregs to replace heavier ramp tractors. |
These details support one well-documented automotive airplane-towing story: Volkswagen’s Touareg demonstration. They do not establish a broad list of cars that routinely tow aircraft, or verify the C/K claim.
