AI data-center demand is putting pressure on selected chip supplies, and automotive memory costs have risen sharply. But the available evidence does not show that AI chip shortages have caused a general increase in 2026 car prices. S&P Global Mobility reported that prices for certain older automotive memory chips rose around 70% year over year in early 2026—a component-cost figure, not a measure of vehicle-price inflation.
What AI demand is competing for
AI servers rely on high-bandwidth memory (HBM), advanced chip packaging and leading-edge processors. Omdia says demand for these resources is straining capacity and that automotive and industrial electronics can compete with AI for memory ICs and packaging. It also reports that DRAM suppliers are prioritizing HBM and other higher-margin products, contributing to greater volatility in commodity-memory prices and lead times. Omdia’s July 30, 2026 outlook describes pressure on particular capacity pools, not a shortage of every kind of chip used in cars.
The automotive effect is especially relevant to memory. S&P Global Mobility says that when manufacturers direct advanced capacity toward HBM for data centers, supplies of automotive-grade DRAM and NAND can tighten, particularly for older generations. Automotive DRAM supply is also concentrated among a small group of manufacturers, which can make alternatives harder to secure. S&P Global Mobility’s April 23, 2026 analysis discusses these market dynamics.
What the price increase means—and what it does not
S&P Global Mobility reported that prices for legacy automotive DDR4 and LPDDR4 rose around 70% year over year in early 2026. These memory types are used in systems including infotainment and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). The reported increase applies to those specified components; it is not a 70% increase in all automotive chips, automakers’ total costs or the price of a car.

Broader memory-market forecasts provide context but should not be mistaken for automotive purchase prices. Gartner forecast that annual DRAM prices would rise 125% and NAND flash prices 234% in 2026. Those are forecasts for memory categories, not observed prices for automotive contracts or retail vehicles. Gartner also forecast worldwide semiconductor revenue would exceed $1.3 trillion in 2026; revenue growth is not itself a measure of a supply shortfall. Gartner’s April 8, 2026 forecast covers the broader semiconductor market.
Why cars need more chips
AI is not the only source of semiconductor demand. Vehicles use chips for electrified powertrains, power controls, driver assistance, automated driving, telematics, infotainment and increasingly centralized computing. These applications need different kinds of components, so pressure on memory or advanced packaging does not imply that every automotive microcontroller, analog chip or power semiconductor is equally constrained.

High insulation, strong alligator clip bite, iron surface nickel-plated treatment, effectively play the role of anti-corrosion, anti-oxidation, resistance to insertion and extraction.
In a 2021 announcement, SEMI quoted Carla Bailo, then president and CEO of the Center for Automotive Research, describing these long-running drivers: “As automotive technology evolves, the industry will become more semiconductor-intensive – advanced safety features, electric vehicles, powertrain controls, automated driving, telematics, and infotainment all drive rapidly increasing auto chip demand,” SEMI reported on April 19, 2021. The statement explains the sector’s structural demand; it is not a claim about 2026 prices.
Why supply problems can be hard to resolve
A chip shortage is not solved simply by finding another factory or substituting a seemingly similar part. Suppliers may be concentrated, production capacity can take time to expand, and a replacement component may require qualification before an automaker can use it. That matters particularly for vehicle programs, where a part must meet the requirements of its specific system and supply chain.

The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), summarizing an EY study on September 29, 2026, highlights concentrated suppliers and processing hubs, limited alternatives and long lead times as supply-chain vulnerabilities. Its account says automotive also competes for relevant inputs with AI, data centers, defense and clean energy. This is European supply-chain analysis, not a quantified finding for every region. ACEA’s summary of the EY analysis describes those risks.

Higher component prices can add cost pressure for automakers, but the amount that reaches buyers depends on more than the price of a chip. Suppliers or automakers may absorb some costs; vehicle prices also reflect other input costs, market conditions, model mix, margins and pricing decisions. The available figures do not show how much the reported automotive-memory increase changed a vehicle’s total bill of materials or how much of that change was passed through to consumers.

The sources cited here do not quantify AI-related chip costs as a contribution to average new-car transaction prices in the United States, Europe, China or globally. They therefore do not establish a single 2026 car-price increase caused by AI demand. The defensible conclusion is narrower: AI demand is adding pressure to selected semiconductor resources, and specified automotive memory has become more expensive, which could contribute to automaker costs and future pricing decisions.
