Road & Track described the result as a record for the model at public auction, but it is an exceptional celebrity-car sale, not a new price guide for ordinary 550 Maranellos.
How much did Michael Jordan’s Ferrari sell for?
Road & Track reported a $2.7 million hammer price for the car, against a published estimate of $700,000 to $1.3 million. JOOPITER’s official lot page records the auction closing at 11:05 p.m. UTC on September 30, 2026, but does not display the realized price; the $2.7 million figure should therefore be attributed to Road & Track’s sale report. Road & Track’s report on the sale.
The sale coverage called it a record for the 550 Maranello. More precisely, it is a reported public-auction record, not evidence of a universal record across private transactions, whose terms and prices may not be public.
What made this particular 550 Maranello special?
A documented connection to Jordan
JOOPITER identifies the Ferrari as chassis 108712. According to its catalog, the car was delivered new to Jordan on May 29, 1997, through Foreign Cars Italia in Greensboro, North Carolina. Its Rosso Barchetta paint, tan leather interior, chrome Speedline wheels and Illinois vanity plate, “MJ 5,” distinguish this example.

The catalog also says the original factory warranty card remains with the car, bearing Jordan’s signature and Durham address. It describes a custom driver’s seat with extended rails and slimmer padding, understood to have been specified to accommodate Jordan’s height; that explanation is the catalog’s attribution, not an independently verified finding. JOOPITER’s lot catalog.
Use during the championship years, then a long absence
The auction catalog says Jordan drove the car for roughly 6,400 miles. It records him leaving the United Center in the Ferrari after winning his fifth NBA title on June 13, 1997, and says he sold it through Lake Forest Sportscars on December 4, 2002. The car then remained in a private California collection until CURATED traced and acquired it.

CURATED returned the Ferrari to Chicago on May 29, 2026, exactly 29 years after its recorded delivery date. Road & Track reports that the car had spent a long period out of public view before its rediscovery. JOOPITER’s account of the car’s history.
What is a Ferrari 550 Maranello?
The 550 Maranello marked Ferrari’s return to a front-engined V12 grand tourer after a period of mid-engined flagship models. JOOPITER’s catalog describes a naturally aspirated 5.5-litre V12, a six-speed gated manual, 485 horsepower and a stated top speed of 199 mph. It reports that Ferrari built 3,083 examples from 1996 to 2001. These are catalog-reported specifications and production figures, not measurements from an independent test. No. Road & Track reports that 550 Maranellos regularly trade around $200,000 to $300,000, while this car’s estimate was already substantially higher. The reported figures are market snapshots, not a comprehensive valuation dataset; they should not be treated as a current guide for every example.
This Ferrari combined model appeal with an unusually well-documented connection to Jordan, identifiable details, a notable ownership history and an auction venue capable of reaching a broad audience. Mileage, condition, specification, provenance, documentation and venue all matter when comparing sales. The evidence does not establish what share of the $2.7 million result came from Jordan’s ownership alone, and this outlier does not predict what an ordinary 550 will sell for. Carscoops reported 18,501 miles on the odometer at auction, while the catalog’s roughly 6,400-mile figure refers to Jordan’s use of the car. Road & Track’s market context.

JOOPITER connects the 550 Maranello’s design to the Air Jordan XIV. Its catalog says designer Tinker Hatfield drew on details associated with the Ferrari, including quilted leather that references the cabin, sculpted vent details, a tire-inspired heel and a shield-shaped Jumpman badge. Jordan debuted the XIV in Game 6 of the 1998 NBA Finals, according to the catalog. The sneakers are a related piece of design history, not part of the Ferrari sale and not car accessories.
