Battery choices and real-world range

The “up to 258 miles” figure is a standardized WLTP comparison result for the 53.9kWh version, not a promise of the distance every driver will achieve. MG says weather, driving style, payload and accessories can change actual range. Battery temperature, battery age, charge state and the power available from the charger also affect the distance you can obtain and the time needed to recharge. Treat WLTP as a consistent way to compare versions, then leave a margin for winter, high speeds, passengers and luggage.
A useful way to choose is to start with your longest normal day rather than the advertised maximum. If you can return home with a comfortable reserve and plug in overnight, the Standard Range may avoid paying for capacity you rarely use. If you cannot charge at home or work, or you often make back-to-back motorway journeys, the Long Range battery reduces the number of charging stops and gives more flexibility when a charger is busy or unavailable.

Charging: what is confirmed and what to check
MG’s stated 10–80% charging time is tied to a 150kW ultra-fast charger under standardized conditions. It should not be read as a universal stop duration: many public units deliver less power, the vehicle may taper its charging rate as the battery fills, and temperature and state of charge influence the result. Before choosing a battery, map the charging you can genuinely use:
- Home charging: Check whether off-street parking, an installed charge point and your electricity supply allow overnight charging. The value of a larger battery falls if your normal trips use only a small portion of it.
- Workplace charging: A reliable socket or charge point at work can make a Standard Range car practical even when home installation is difficult.
- Public-only charging: Price the tariffs on your regular routes and check whether the locations have the connector and output you need. A Long Range car can reduce visits, but public charging costs and queues still matter.

Boot space and everyday practicality
The UK product information highlights 98 litres of storage beneath the boot floor. That hidden compartment can keep charging leads or smaller items separate from the main luggage area, which is useful in a hatchback used for mixed daily errands.
MG’s European page advertises up to 577 litres of total boot capacity and 1,364 litres with the rear seats folded.
