Windsor and Windsor PRO: battery and range differences

The current manufacturer material identifies two battery-and-range combinations. The figures are certified or manufacturer-claimed test-cycle results; they are not a guarantee of the distance your car will cover in traffic, heat, rain or with frequent air-conditioning use.

The July 2026 announcement pairs the 38 kWh/332 km and 52.9 kWh/449 km specifications with the Windsor family. The original launch release describes the standard pack as IP67 certified. Confirm the exact battery, charging equipment, warranty wording and included features on the invoice for your selected trim.

How BaaS changes the purchase and monthly bill

Battery-as-a-Service separates part of the battery cost from the vehicle price. You pay a lower stated vehicle amount and a battery rental calculated per kilometre. It does not include electricity: the brochure extract explicitly says charging expenses are additional.

These are arithmetic illustrations of the quoted rates, not measured ownership costs. The ₹3.90 rate is the starting figure in the 6 July 2026 headline; ₹4.50 is the dated PRO launch rate from 6 May 2025. Do not assume either rate applies to every trim, city, financier or contract today.

Contract questions to answer before signing

• Is billing based on odometer kilometres, a fixed minimum, or another measure?
• What is the contract duration and what happens at renewal?
• Are GST and other taxes included in the quoted per-kilometre amount?
• Does the rate change with usage, vehicle transfer or a change of financier?
• What are the early-termination, resale and foreclosure rules?
• Who pays for battery damage, accident assessment, misuse or an insurance excess?
• What happens if the vehicle is off the road for repairs?
• Which warranty, roadside assistance and buyback conditions attach to the battery and the vehicle?

The available brochure search extract says rental varies by financier offer, finance is subject to financier credit norms, and taxes and fees may apply. Because the full PDF terms were not available, require the financier’s complete agreement and tariff sheet rather than relying on a salesperson’s verbal explanation.

Cash purchase, conventional loan or BaaS: compare the complete outlay

For a finance comparison, request the annual percentage rate, principal financed, tenure, down payment, processing and documentation charges, insurance treatment, prepayment or foreclosure charge, late-payment consequences and the total amount payable. A low EMI can simply reflect a longer term or a larger final obligation.

The May 2025 PRO announcement named Bajaj Finserv, Herofin Corp, Ecofy, VidyutTech, IDFC First Bank and Kotak Mahindra Prime as supporting BaaS financiers at launch. That list is historical; participation, rates, credit criteria and availability must be confirmed in your current quotation.

How to obtain a reliable city-specific on-road quote

1. Choose the exact version, battery and trim, and state whether you want the battery-included or BaaS route.
2. Give the dealer your registration city and pin code. Ask for a quote addressed to you and dated, not a generic website banner.
3. Demand separate lines for ex-showroom vehicle price, battery rental or battery price, registration, road tax, insurance, fast-charging equipment, accessories, handling or logistics fees, applicable taxes and any discount.
4. For a loan, obtain the sanction letter or written illustration showing amount financed, interest rate, tenure, EMI, all fees and total repayment.
5. For BaaS, attach the rental schedule and contract. Check kilometre measurement, minimum usage, taxes, rate revisions, termination, transfer, accident and battery-damage clauses.
6. Check the validity date and the conditions attached to every promotion, including booking limits, owner eligibility and required maintenance packages.
7. Compare at least one battery-included quote with one BaaS quote using your expected kilometres and charging tariff.
8. Before paying a booking amount, ensure the final invoice and contract match the quote and state who supplies the battery, vehicle warranty and charging hardware.

1. Vehicle finance or cash allocation: use the lender’s total repayment divided across the months you expect to own the car, or record the cash outlay separately.
2. BaaS rental: multiply the contract rate by your actual billed kilometres. Use zero only if your written contract has no BaaS charge because the battery is included.
3. Electricity: multiply energy drawn from home or public chargers by each tariff. Include the proportions of home, workplace and public charging; do not substitute the certified range for consumption.
4. Insurance, registration and taxes: allocate one-time and annual amounts over your intended ownership period if you want a monthly budget.
5. Maintenance and tyres: use a current schedule or written quote. Include consumables and replacement tyres when estimating a longer ownership period.

A spreadsheet can use these cells: kilometres per month, BaaS rate, kWh charged per month, home tariff, public tariff, EMI, insurance allocation, maintenance allocation and tyre allocation. Keep BaaS and electricity in separate rows so a low advertised vehicle price does not hide the energy bill.

Illustrative calculation without inventing efficiency

If your contract actually says ₹3.90/km and you drive 1,500 km in a month, the battery rental line is ₹5,850. Your electricity line still requires your charger-meter readings or charging invoices and the applicable tariff. Add the lender’s EMI and local ownership costs to obtain your own monthly total; the example does not estimate how many kilowatt-hours the car will consume.

How much does it cost to charge an MG Windsor?

The available material does not establish a current electricity tariff, a measured kWh-per-kilometre figure or a universal charging price. Charging cost therefore depends on where and how you charge:

• Home charging: use the tariff on your electricity bill and, ideally, a separate meter reading for the charger.
• Workplace charging: use the site’s posted rate or reimbursement rule.

The standard Windsor’s published 332 km figure is an ARAI-certified claim in the 2024 launch material. The PRO’s 449 km figure is identified as certified MIDC P1+P2 range in the May 2025 launch release. Certification provides a comparable test-cycle reference, not an individual guarantee.

Expect variation from average speed, traffic, gradients, payload, tyre pressure, weather, air-conditioning, regenerative-braking settings, charging state and driving style. Ask for a demonstration drive with the battery state shown, check the trip computer after representative urban and highway use, and plan a reserve rather than scheduling a trip to the exact certified number.

Confirm which battery and software version are fitted to the car you are ordering. A 38 kWh Windsor and a 52.9 kWh PRO are different planning propositions even though both are sold under the Windsor name.

Warranty, buyback and charging benefits: dated claims to verify

The 6 May 2025 PRO announcement said the first owner would receive a lifetime battery warranty and described a “3-60 assured buyback plan” in which the vehicle would retain 60% of its value after three years. The release’s footnotes state that the buyback program is part of a three-year maintenance package and subject to terms. Treat both the warranty and buyback as conditional manufacturer claims until your written offer confirms eligibility, kilometre limits, maintenance requirements, exclusions and the party responsible for the buyback.

The 21 September 2024 launch release also advertised a first-owner lifetime battery warranty, 60% buyback after three years/45,000 km and one year of free public charging through the eHUB by MG app. Those were launch-era benefits, not a standing entitlement for every 2026 purchase. Ask for the current warranty booklet, maintenance package and charging-benefit terms.

Is MG Windsor BaaS worth it?

BaaS can make the initial vehicle price look lower, but its value depends on your distance, financing and contract tolerance. Decide using your own written quote rather than the headline price.

BaaS may suit you when

• You want to reduce the initial vehicle amount or down payment.
• Your monthly kilometres are predictable and the quoted rental remains attractive at that distance.
• You can charge conveniently and have included electricity in your budget.
• The financier provides clear terms for transfer, early termination, damage and resale.
• You are comfortable checking a recurring battery contract alongside the vehicle loan.

Battery-included purchase may suit you when

• You prefer one vehicle payment without a per-kilometre battery bill.
• Your mileage is high, irregular or difficult to document.
• You plan to keep the car for a long period and want to avoid contract changes or transfer conditions.
• Your lender’s battery-included rate and total repayment are competitive after all fees.

There is no defensible break-even mileage using the published information alone. Electricity prices, actual consumption, finance rates, rental contracts, taxes, maintenance and resale assumptions are all needed before one route can be declared cheaper.

The 2026 release uses “starting” language. The PRO’s ₹4.5/km figure belongs to its 2025 launch offer. Verify the rate for your trim, financier and city.

Leaving charging out of the budget
