Yes, you can charge an MG Windsor EV at home. The practical choices are the supplied or approved 3.3 kW portable charging cable on a correctly rated 16 A AC circuit, or a dedicated 7.4 kW wall-mounted charger. Which equipment you receive, and whether a wallbox is suitable, depends on the Windsor variant, battery and model year. Charging times are approximate manufacturer figures; installation cost is site-specific and must be quoted after an electrical survey.
Can I charge my MG Windsor EV at home?
Yes. MG describes two AC home-charging routes for the Windsor: a 3.3 kW portable unit connected to a suitable 16 A socket, and an original 7.4 kW dedicated wall-mounted unit. The portable cable is simpler and can be useful where you do not have a permanent wallbox. The 7.4 kW unit normally needs a dedicated circuit, protective devices, grounding and an authorised installation.

Do not choose equipment from a generic listing solely because its power rating matches. The vehicle manual recommends original charging equipment, and the correct Type 2-compatible hardware, current rating and installation terms must be checked for your exact car. Confirm the variant name, battery capacity, supplied cable or charger and approved installation process with an authorised MG service centre before paying for hardware or electrical work.

The current model page lists a 449 km certified range for the 52.9 kWh Pro variants, with certification described there as MIDC P1+P2. That is a certified range claim, not a promise of the distance you will obtain between charges in your conditions.
Read the MG Windsor EV owner’s manual and the current Windsor model information for the documents that apply to your vehicle.

“Portable” does not mean “plug it into any convenient outlet.” A socket that is loose, heat-damaged, shared with high-load appliances or fed by undersized wiring can overheat. A wallbox also is not automatically safe simply because it is professionally packaged; the circuit, upstream protection, earth connection and mounting location all matter.
How long does it take to fully charge the MG Windsor EV?
MG’s owner’s manual gives approximate times from 10% to 100% for AC charging. They are not guarantees. Battery capacity, starting state of charge, battery and ambient temperature, and the external charging equipment can change the result. The brochure gives the same type of warning about battery condition, charger specification and ambient temperature.

The manual does not list a 52.9 kWh time for the 3.3 kW configuration. Do not convert the 10–100% figures into a different 0–100% claim or compare them directly with a promotional page that uses another starting percentage. A session beginning at 40% will normally finish sooner than the published 10% example, while cold conditions or reduced power can make it longer.
What the numbers mean at home
- The 3.3 kW cable is generally an overnight solution. A 38 kWh battery taking about 13.5 hours from 10% is compatible with a long parked period, but a short stop will add less energy.
- The 7.4 kW unit roughly halves the listed 38 kWh charging time compared with the portable unit and is the more convenient choice for regular daily driving.
- Neither AC figure says how much electricity your meter will record. Charging losses, the energy already in the battery and the tariff determine the bill.
- The DC figures are for public, trip-oriented charging. They are not a recommendation to install a DC charger at a normal home and do not establish eligibility for any free-charging promotion.
How to plan a safe home setup
1. Identify the exact vehicle and equipment
Record the delivery invoice or registration details, trim or variant, battery size and every charging item supplied with the car. Ask the dealer or authorised service centre to confirm whether your vehicle has the 3.3 kW portable unit, a 3.3 kW home charging box, a 7.4 kW wallbox or an entitlement that requires separate installation. Keep that written confirmation with the quotation.

2. Arrange a site survey before buying electrical materials
Have MG’s authorised installer or a qualified EVSE electrician inspect the parking location and the consumer unit or meter board. The survey should establish the cable route and length, mounting surface, weather exposure, earthing arrangement, available sanctioned load, upstream switchgear, leakage protection and any trenching, drilling or other civil work. A survey is also where the installer can identify a damaged socket, overloaded circuit or voltage issue that a product description cannot reveal.

The manual recommends a 16 A AC socket with a thermal-use socket for the portable charging cable. For either option, every segment of the power line—wires, plugs and sockets—must meet the specified load. The manual also says the main switch and leakage-protection switch should be installed at the front of the charging line so the supply can be disconnected and leakage protection operated in an emergency, and that the ground wire must be grounded properly.
Those requirements are design instructions, not a do-it-yourself wiring recipe. The installer must select ratings and protection that comply with the vehicle manual and applicable local electrical rules. Do not substitute a household extension lead, improvised adapter or “flying” cable for a properly designed circuit.
4. Install and document the charger
For the 7.4 kW unit, use the original equipment and the authorised JSW MG service-centre installation route specified in the manual. Obtain a written scope showing the charger model, circuit protection, cable route, earthing checks, commissioning test and warranty responsibilities. Photograph the completed meter-board labels and keep the invoice, test results and handover instructions.
5. Do a first-session check
During the first charge, remain close enough to stop the session if the socket, plug, cable or isolator becomes unusually hot, smells of burning, shows arcing or trips repeatedly. A mild warmth can occur under load; progressive heat, discoloration, buzzing or repeated protection trips are warning signs. Stop charging, isolate the circuit if safe to do so and call the installer or MG service centre rather than repeatedly resetting the breaker.

Avoid flying wires, and do not wrap the power line or harness around the charging equipment. Otherwise, the part that cannot meet the load requirements may melt or catch fire due to overheating.”

In practical terms, keep the cable uncoiled as instructed, protect connectors from water and physical damage, avoid sharing the circuit with heavy loads, and never defeat a protective device to keep a charge running. If your parking space is in a basement, apartment or shared compound, obtain the housing association’s approval and follow its fire and cable-routing rules as well as the electrical requirements.
What is the cost of home charger installation?
There is no published, current, itemised MG Windsor installation price that can be applied to every Indian home. Some variants or offers may include charging equipment, but the site work is still property-specific. A dealer FAQ for another MG model notes that manufacturer-provided installation did not cover DISCOM load enhancement or additional-connection charges and specified civil work; that is a warning about possible cost categories, not a Windsor price or current Windsor policy.

Ask MG for a survey-based quotation and ask your local DISCOM which approvals and charges apply. Require the quote to separate equipment from installation and to state what is excluded.

Do not accept a telephone estimate as the final price when the installer has not seen the parking bay and meter board. Two homes with identical Windsor cars can receive very different quotes because one has a nearby compliant circuit while the other needs a long route, structural work or a sanctioned-load upgrade.
How much will charging add to the electricity bill?
Your bill depends on the energy actually drawn, the tariff applicable to the connection and charging losses. A useful planning expression is charging cost ≈ energy drawn from the meter × applicable tariff. The battery’s nominal 38 kWh or 52.9 kWh capacity is not, by itself, a billable amount: the car may begin partly charged, and the meter records energy used by the vehicle and charging system.
Ask the DISCOM whether your connection has a separate EV tariff, time-of-use rate or sanctioned-load condition. Use a recent bill and the installer’s measured setup rather than a national average when estimating monthly cost. A quote for the charger does not include your recurring electricity tariff.

Choose based on your actual parking and electrical conditions, not only the headline kilowatt figure. If you routinely return with a low state of charge and leave again after a few hours, the wallbox may be worth the installation. If the car stays parked overnight and the survey finds a compliant circuit nearby, the portable route may meet your needs.

Public DC charging is the fast option for travel. MG’s manual lists about 45 minutes at 45 kW or 50 minutes at 60 kW from 20% to 80%, depending on battery configuration. Those figures describe a public charging session and should not be used to size a home AC installation.

Charging promotions are separate from home equipment. MG’s published offer terms cover public charging through specified networks and eHUB transactions, with eligibility windows, usage limits and expiry conditions. The terms exclude home-charging setups, including a personal home charger. MG’s 11 February 2025 statement described the Windsor free-public-charging change as a fair-use policy update and advised owners to follow the manual and use DC fast charging mindfully.
Check the official terms that match your booking or retail date and locality before assigning any value to a promotion:
A public-charging benefit cannot be assumed to pay for your cable, wallbox, wiring, civil work or DISCOM charges.

The charger trips the breaker immediately
Stop resetting it. The cause may be leakage, an overloaded circuit, incorrect protection, a damaged connector or an installation fault. Isolate the charging circuit if safe and call the installer or authorised service centre for testing.
The plug or socket becomes hot
End the session and let the equipment cool. Heat can indicate a loose contact, undersized conductor, worn socket or poor termination. Do not replace the socket with a higher-rated one without checking the entire circuit and protection.
Charging is much slower than the table
Check the starting state of charge, battery and ambient temperature, selected charging equipment and whether the supply is being limited. The manual’s figures are approximate and measured over a stated 10–100% or 20–80% window; they are not a guaranteed rate for every session.
The installer says the home supply is insufficient
Ask for the measured load, the required sanctioned load and the proposed remedy. Contact the DISCOM about load enhancement or connection changes, and obtain a revised written quote that identifies civil and utility charges separately.

You are unsure whether the charger belongs to your trim
Do not buy a replacement or wallbox based on a brochure for another model year. Provide the vehicle identification and variant details to an authorised MG service centre and request confirmation of compatible equipment and warranty conditions.
Checklist before approving installation
- Exact Windsor variant, model year and battery recorded
- Supplied charging equipment physically checked
- MG-approved charger and installation route confirmed in writing
- Site survey completed at the actual parking bay
- 16 A socket and thermal-use requirement addressed for portable charging
- Dedicated circuit, main switch, leakage protection and grounding specified
- Cable route, mounting, weather protection and civil work itemised
- Sanctioned-load and DISCOM requirements checked
- Warranty, commissioning test and exclusions stated on the quote
- Public-charging promotion checked separately against the purchase-date terms
Bottom line for an MG Windsor owner
Home charging is practical, but the correct answer is variant-specific. Use the approved 3.3 kW portable setup when a qualified inspection confirms a compliant 16 A circuit, or use the original 7.4 kW wall-mounted unit when your vehicle and site support it. Plan around MG’s approximate 13.5-hour, 7-hour and 9.5-hour figures rather than a guaranteed finish time. Have an authorised installer survey the property, insist on proper switching, leakage protection and grounding, and obtain a written quote that separates equipment, civil work and DISCOM costs. Treat public DC offers as a separate, time-limited benefit—not as payment for home installation.
