For the India-market MG Windsor EV, follow the vehicle’s own charging instructions rather than a generic “stop at 80%” rule. The owner’s manual recommends charging to 100% whenever you charge, completing a slow AC charge to 100% at least once every 15 days or after every four fast-DC or opportunity-charging cycles (whichever comes first), and avoiding driving below 10% state of charge (SOC). MG says the slow full charge supports SOC calibration and cell balancing; it does not publish a number of extra years or a percentage of degradation prevented by this routine.
That advice applies across the Windsor range, but charging speed and equipment depend on the battery and trim. Confirm the exact specification of your car, use safe equipment in suitable weather, and treat the manual as the authority for your vehicle.

The Windsor battery routine in one minute
- Charge to 100% whenever you plug in. This is the wording in JSW MG Motor India’s Windsor EV owner’s manual, section 3.2.6.
- Make at least one of those charges a slow AC charge to 100% every 15 days, or after four fast-DC/opportunity-charging sessions. Use whichever deadline arrives first.
- Do not plan trips that take the car below 10% SOC. Recharge before reaching that threshold.
- Do not charge in thunderstorms or the heavy-rain conditions described by the manual. Stop using any charging gun, station or cable that is visibly damaged.
These are manufacturer operating instructions, not a laboratory claim that a particular habit guarantees a longer battery life. The manual explains the calibration and balancing purpose but gives no measured degradation rate or lifespan improvement.
Why the Windsor manual says 100% while generic EV advice often says 80%
Many EV owners hear general advice to keep a battery around the middle of its state-of-charge range and reserve 100% for long trips. That can be sensible for some vehicles, battery chemistries or use cases, but it is not a substitute for the Windsor’s model-specific instructions. The manual explicitly says, “It is recommended to charge the vehicle to 100%, whenever vehicle is being charged.” It then specifies a slow AC full charge for periodic SOC calibration and cell balancing.

SOC is the car’s estimate of how much usable energy remains. Calibration lets the battery-management system reconcile its estimate with the cells’ actual voltage and usable capacity. Cell balancing trims differences between individual cells so that one cell does not reach its limit substantially earlier than the others. Those explanations describe the stated purpose of MG’s routine; they are not proof of a quantified reduction in long-term capacity loss.
If your normal charging pattern consists mostly of short top-ups or DC sessions, the scheduled slow AC session is particularly important because it is the step MG links directly to calibration and balancing. Do not replace the manufacturer’s 15-day/four-cycle rule with an internet-derived percentage range.
A practical charging schedule for different driving patterns
Mostly home charging
Plug in when convenient and follow the manual’s 100% recommendation. At least once in each 15-day period, allow a slow AC session to reach 100%. If you drive very little, the calendar rule still applies; it is not limited to high-mileage owners.

Count fast-DC or opportunity-charging cycles. After the fourth such cycle, schedule a slow AC charge all the way to 100%, even if 15 days have not elapsed. If 15 days pass first, do the slow full charge then. “Whichever comes first” prevents an owner who relies on rapid charging from postponing the calibration routine indefinitely.

Mixed AC and DC use
Keep the same two checks in your routine: the 15-day calendar limit and the four-fast-charge limit. A slow AC charge that reaches 100% satisfies the periodic requirement; a partial or rapid charge does not substitute for it.
Before a long journey
Charging to 100% is consistent with the Windsor manual. Allow enough time for the vehicle to complete the charge rather than disconnecting early because a displayed percentage is convenient. Plan a reserve so that normal driving does not push the car below 10% SOC.
Slow AC and DC fast charging: what each is for
The relevant distinction is not a ranking of charger brands. It is the role each charging method plays in the Windsor’s care instructions.

The published times are approximate. MG says charging time varies with high-voltage battery condition, charger specifications and ambient temperature. Vehicle configuration also matters, so do not assume that a Pro figure applies to every Windsor trim. A September 11, 2024 launch release mentioned 40 minutes at a DC fast charger for the original 38 kWh configuration; that launch-era number should not be blended with current variant figures or treated as a universal Windsor charging time.

The sources do not establish a measured difference in battery degradation between AC and DC charging. The actionable distinction is the manual’s requirement to use slow AC for the periodic full charge, while DC is counted as part of the four-cycle trigger.
Stay above the 10% SOC threshold
The manual states, “Avoid driving vehicle below 10% SOC.” Treat 10% as a floor for trip planning, not as a target at which to arrive routinely. Check the displayed SOC before setting out, allow for traffic, weather, hills and detours, and choose a charging stop early enough that a delay does not force the battery under the threshold.
This instruction does not create a published preferred daily window such as 20–80%. MG gives the 10% avoidance threshold and the 100% charging routine; owners should not infer a more precise operating range than the documentation supports.

Charging safely in rain, storms and around damaged equipment
Weather and equipment precautions are part of battery care because a damaged connector or wet, exposed installation can create an electric-shock, lightning or equipment-damage hazard.

- Thunder and lightning: do not charge during thunderstorms. The manual warns against charging in thunder and lightning conditions.
- Heavy rain and open-air charging: the manual says not to charge in the open air on rainy days and cautions against the heavy-rain conditions it identifies. Use a properly protected installation and postpone charging when conditions are unsafe.
- Visible damage: do not use a charging station, charging gun or supply cable if it is visibly damaged. Contact an MG service representative instead.
- Cable placement: keep cables where people will not step on, trip over or otherwise damage them.
- Children: children must not operate the charging device without adult supervision.
Do not improvise repairs to a connector or cable. If a session stops unexpectedly, inspect the equipment without touching damaged parts and obtain service guidance.
Use scheduled charging when timing matters
The Windsor provides an in-vehicle schedule: Menu – EV – Setting – Schedule charging. Use it when you want charging to begin at a planned time, for example after a household routine or when the car will remain parked for several hours. The feature changes the start time; it does not replace the manual’s requirement for a periodic slow AC charge to 100%.
Whether scheduling lowers your bill depends on your electricity tariff, meter and local utility rules. The vehicle documentation does not establish a universal tariff saving, so check your own rate plan before assuming a financial benefit.

The same live page says Pro variants include a 7.4 kW charger and gives the approximate 9.5-hour AC and 50-minute DC figures quoted above. That does not mean every Windsor owner needs to purchase a home charger, nor that every trim has identical onboard hardware.
Before arranging home installation, verify the car’s battery and trim, the supplied connector, whether a 7.4 kW Type 2-class AC unit is already included, and whether your home electrical supply can support the installation. A compatible charger is an equipment and installation decision, not a battery-care requirement by itself.
How to maintain an accurate, low-stress routine
- Record the last qualifying slow charge. Note the date when the battery reached 100% on slow AC.
- Track rapid-charge sessions. After each fast-DC or opportunity session, increment your count. Reset the count after the next qualifying slow AC full charge.
- Set an early charging trigger. Do not wait until 10% SOC if a charger is available earlier; the manual’s instruction is to avoid going below that level.
- Inspect before plugging in. Check the cable, gun and station for visible damage and make sure the cable route is clear.
- Check the weather. Postpone charging in thunder, lightning or unsafe heavy rain.
- Confirm completion. If a scheduled session ends early or a charger faults, arrange another slow AC session so the 15-day/four-cycle requirement is actually met.
Warranty expectations and what “lifetime” does not establish
The current MG Windsor product information reports a lifetime battery warranty for the first owner. That headline does not, by itself, establish the warranty’s conditions, exclusions, transferability, geographic scope, claim process or treatment of capacity loss. Read the current warranty documentation or ask MG for those terms before relying on the word “lifetime.”

Following the manual is the sensible way to operate the vehicle and support a warranty conversation, but the manual does not promise that the 100% routine will prevent a specific failure or preserve a stated percentage of capacity. No independent degradation study, owner-fleet statistic or numerical battery-life improvement is established in the cited material.
