Choose the MG M9 if your family can charge at home or work reliably and wants an electric luxury MPV. Choose the Kia Carnival Limousine if flexible diesel refuelling, established long-distance routines and a lower dated entry price matter more. The two vehicles are not powertrain equivalents: the M9 is a battery-electric MPV, while the India-market Carnival uses a 2,151-cc diesel engine. Your routes, charging access, seating needs, exact trim and current on-road quote should decide the purchase—not the badge or a single range number.

Both are seven-seat luxury MPVs in the cited India-market specifications. Neither external length nor a feature count proves that your child seats, adults and luggage will fit better. Take the family and the luggage you actually carry to a physical inspection.

MG M9: electric performance with a claimed range
MG Motor India’s newsroom announcement describes the M9 with a 90-kWh NMC battery, 245 PS and 350 Nm. It gives a 548-km claimed range; Autocar identifies that figure as MIDC range. MIDC is a test-cycle result, not a promise that every family will travel 548 km between charges. Speed, air-conditioning use, passenger load, temperature, traffic, hills and battery reserve can all change the distance available in practice.

MG also states that the M9 can charge from 30 to 80 percent in 30 minutes. That is a manufacturer claim whose result depends on a compatible high-power charger, battery temperature, charger availability and the vehicle’s charging curve. It should be treated as a planning reference rather than a guaranteed stop time.
For a family EV, the useful question is not simply whether 548 km sounds sufficient. Check whether you can start most days with a high state of charge, whether your apartment or workplace permits installation and use of a suitable charger, and whether the routes you take have dependable fast-charging alternatives. If a charger is occupied, out of service or incompatible, the nominal range does not remove the delay.
Kia Carnival: diesel familiarity and refuelling flexibility
Kia India lists a 2,151-cc diesel engine and a 72-litre fuel tank for the Carnival Limousine. A fuel tank gives a different kind of flexibility: a conventional fuel stop is usually easier to find on intercity routes than a high-power EV charger, although actual fuel economy and range vary with driving conditions and load. Kia’s specification page does not establish a single real-world distance per tank, so do not convert the tank capacity into a promised trip range.

It still needs normal diesel servicing and fuel expenditure, while the M9 requires a charging routine and a plan for longer journeys.

How to compare your own routes
- List weekly driving. Separate school runs, commuting, airport trips and weekend highway journeys rather than using one average distance.
- Mark charging points. For the M9, identify a usable home or workplace point and at least one practical alternative on every regular long route.
- Check parking rules. Apartment permissions, electrical capacity, cable routing and access hours can matter more than the vehicle’s advertised charging rate.
- Plan with a reserve. Do not schedule an EV trip to arrive at a charger with no contingency; allow for weather, traffic, detours and a busy station.
- Compare interruption tolerance. If a missed charger would jeopardise a medical, school or work commitment, the Carnival’s refuelling model may better match your routine.
Size, seating and usable family space
The M9 is larger on the principal exterior measurements reported in the comparison. That can help with proportions and access, but it cannot by itself establish better legroom, third-row comfort or luggage capacity.

What to inspect with children
- Install every child seat in the positions your family uses. Check buckle access, tether points, door clearance and whether an adult can reach the release without climbing through the cabin.
- Have the tallest regular passenger sit in the second and third rows. Measure comfort with the front seats set for the actual driver and passenger, not pushed forward for a showroom impression.
- Open and close the sliding doors beside a wall, another parked car and a kerb. Confirm that children can enter without stepping into traffic and that the doors can be operated when the vehicle is fully loaded.
- Load the stroller, school bags, cabin cases and any mobility equipment you carry. A seven-seat label does not state how much luggage remains behind the third row.
- Check the turning circle, parking sensors, camera view and garage height. The M9’s greater height and length may affect a tight parking space even if its driver-assistance systems help.
Autocar’s dimensions are from its 22 July 2025 comparison, while the Carnival figures come from Kia India’s specification page. Model-year, market and trim changes can alter equipment or seating, so use the numbers to shortlist and the actual vehicle to decide.
Second-row comfort and access

MG describes the M9’s second-row Presidential Seats as 16-way adjustable, with eight massage settings, heating and ventilation. Those features target passengers who spend substantial time in the second row. Ask whether all functions are standard on the car offered to you, whether controls are reachable by children, and how much space the seat needs when it reclines.
Kia Carnival equipment listed by Kia
Kia’s India material describes second-row VIP relaxation seats with leg support. The same pages list powered sliding doors and a dual sunroof. Powered doors can make child and elderly access easier, but test their opening speed, obstruction detection and operation when the vehicle is parked close to another car. A sunroof adds light and perceived space; it does not replace checking headroom or heat management in your climate.

Comfort is a use case, not a checklist
Massage, ventilation and leg support matter most when the second row is occupied for long periods. They matter less if your family normally fills all seven seats and the second row must slide or fold frequently. During a test drive, cycle every adjustment with a passenger seated, try the third-row access route, and verify that a child seat does not block the preferred relaxation position.
Safety equipment and crash-test evidence
What MG says about the M9
MG’s cited announcement lists seven airbags and Level 2 ADAS. It also claims five-star ratings from Euro NCAP and ANCAP. Those rating statements should be attributed to MG unless you verify the exact tested variant and result directly with the rating organisations. A rating for one market or configuration should not automatically be applied to every India-market trim.
What Kia lists for the Carnival
Kia India’s pages list eight airbags and ADAS features for the Carnival. The available material does not establish a directly comparable independent crash-test rating for the exact India-market Carnival variant. Treat the listed airbags and driver-assistance functions as equipment information, not proof of a crash outcome.

How to evaluate the systems
- Request the exact variant name, model year and standard-versus-optional safety equipment in writing.
- Ask the salesperson to demonstrate forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise, lane support and blind-spot functions where fitted.
- Check how the systems behave with motorcycles, narrow lanes, heavy rain and road markings typical of your routes; a demonstration cannot reproduce every condition.
- Confirm that airbags and child-seat anchors are available in the seating positions you intend to use.
Price: use dated figures only as context
Vehicle prices change with taxes, logistics, equipment revisions, exchange rates, dealer offers and registration rules. The following figures are not current on-road quotes.

The gap between the two figures in the dated comparison was ₹6 lakh ex-showroom, but that is a historical snapshot, not a purchasing rule. Compare like for like: variant, accessories, insurance, registration, road tax, extended warranty, charger installation and any temporary offer. An EV’s purchase quote should also state what charging hardware and installation work are included, if anything.
Warranty and roadside support
Kia India lists a three-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, an option to extend coverage up to the fifth year and three years of roadside assistance. Confirm the exclusions, transfer rules, battery and high-voltage-system coverage, service intervals and the terms applicable to the exact car.
The cited MG material does not provide a comparable warranty schedule. Ask MG for written coverage for the vehicle, battery, charging equipment, roadside assistance, exclusions, service intervals and any distance or time limits before paying a booking amount. Do not assume that the M9’s electric powertrain has the same terms as another MG model.
Ownership support and availability
MG says M9 experience and bookings are available at 14 MG Select Experience Centres in 13 cities. That is useful if one of those locations is convenient, but it does not prove service coverage near your home or every route you drive. Ask where diagnosis, body repair, high-voltage work and roadside recovery will actually be handled.

For the Carnival, confirm the nearest authorised workshop, appointment lead times, parts policy and roadside-assistance process. A luxury MPV’s ownership experience includes more than the showroom: check how a minor door, sensor or seat fault is escalated and whether a replacement vehicle is available under the written terms.

Choose the MG M9 when these statements are true
- You have dependable overnight or workplace charging that you control rather than merely hope to access.
- Most daily travel is predictable, and you can plan charging stops for longer journeys.
- Quiet electric operation and second-row features such as massage, heating and ventilation are central to the purchase.
- You accept that the 548-km figure is a claimed MIDC result and will plan with a practical reserve.
- An MG Select Experience Centre and suitable service support are accessible to you.
Choose the Kia Carnival when these statements are true
- Your family makes frequent long trips with changing destinations or uncertain charging infrastructure.
- You value conventional diesel refuelling and do not want to organise home charging.
- Second-row VIP relaxation seats with leg support, powered sliding doors and the Carnival’s cabin layout suit your passengers.
- The current on-road quotation, warranty and service network are more comfortable for your budget and location.
- You need to keep travelling when a charger is busy, unavailable or outside your route.
When neither is an obvious winner
If your family has both reliable charging and frequent long-distance travel, the choice may come down to how often the second use case occurs and how much time you are willing to spend planning it. If seven people and luggage travel together regularly, physical cargo and third-row testing should outweigh a small difference in exterior dimensions. If the vehicle is primarily a chauffeur-driven second-row lounge, compare seat access, recline geometry, ventilation, noise and ride comfort in the exact trims rather than counting features.
A purchase-stage checklist
- Identify the exact car. Record model year, variant, seating layout, battery or engine specification and every safety and comfort feature included as standard.
- Get two written prices. Request ex-showroom and complete on-road totals, with insurance, registration, taxes, accessories, charger work and discounts separated.
- Verify ownership terms. Compare vehicle, battery, drivetrain, roadside-assistance and extended-warranty coverage line by line.
- Prove the route fit. For the M9, map home charging and backup fast chargers. For the Carnival, check fuel availability on the routes where you regularly travel.
- Bring the family. Install your child seats, seat the tallest passenger in every row and operate the doors, seat controls and tailgate.
- Load real luggage. Use the stroller, bags and equipment that normally occupy the vehicle, with all intended seats in use.
- Drive in representative conditions. Include traffic, a rough surface, a motorway section and parking manoeuvres. Note visibility, ride comfort, braking feel, noise and how easy it is to supervise children.
- Confirm delivery support. Ask who handles software updates, charging faults, ADAS calibration, accident repairs and roadside recovery after handover.
- Recheck before booking. Prices, availability, specifications and included equipment can change; obtain a dated quotation and retain the written configuration.
The practical answer is conditional: the M9 is the more compelling fit for a charge-ready household seeking electric luxury, while the Carnival is the safer logistical choice for families that prioritise diesel refuelling flexibility. Your own charging access, routes, passengers, luggage and written ownership terms should determine which one you buy.
