Choose the Nissan Qashqai if you value familiar controls and access to powertrains with stronger official fuel-economy figures, particularly e-POWER. Neither is automatically cheaper to own: the published fuel figures cover different engines and test conditions, while matched insurance, servicing, depreciation and repair data is not established for every version.
This is a UK-market comparison. Exact results depend on model year, trim, engine, transmission and (for the Qashqai) whether you choose mild-hybrid or e-POWER. Treat the figures below as a way to narrow your shortlist, then obtain quotes and drive both cars in comparable specifications.

What is being compared?
The current MG HS and Nissan Qashqai are family SUVs, but each name covers several specifications. An HS petrol, an HS full-hybrid and an HS plug-in hybrid will not have the same economy, weight or equipment. The Qashqai is available with a mild-hybrid system or e-POWER, and its boot volume varies by version. A fair buying decision therefore starts with two cars matched as closely as possible for fuel type, transmission, trim and price.
The evidence used here comes from UK manufacturer information and independent road-test or comparison material available in 2026. The Carwow comparison describes the HS as spacious and equipment-focused, while the Qashqai is presented as having a familiar, straightforward cabin. Those are useful characterisations, not a universal ranking of ride comfort.

MG HS and Nissan Qashqai at a glance
| Measure | MG HS | Nissan Qashqai |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol power output quoted by the manufacturer | 169PS and 275Nm from the 1.5-litre turbo petrol version, according to MG Motor UK | The cited Nissan material does not provide one directly comparable output figure for every Qashqai version |
| Highest official combined economy in the cited material | Up to 38.1mpg WLTP combined for the petrol HS (MG Motor UK) | Up to 45.6mpg for an Acenta Premium mild-hybrid automatic; 62.8–65.7mpg for e-POWER, depending on version (Nissan UK) |
| Boot capacity | Carwow identifies generous space, but the cited material does not establish one litre figure for every HS version | 455–504 litres, depending on version, in the 2025/26 UK brochure (Nissan UK brochure) |
| Warranty | Seven years; MG’s fleet-award announcement specifies seven years or 80,000 miles | The exact comparable term for the Qashqai version you buy should be confirmed with Nissan or the supplying dealer |
| Independent HS fuel result | 33.6mpg in Auto Express’s mixed town-and-motorway test of an automatic HS; 51.3mpg claimed for the full-hybrid HS | Auto Express says Qashqai examples in its testing returned more than 40mpg, under that publication’s test conditions |
These rows are not a like-for-like laboratory comparison. The official numbers use WLTP test cycles and different powertrains; the road-test results come from separate cars and routes.
Space and practicality
Boot room
The Qashqai has a clearly published range of 455 to 504 litres, with the exact capacity depending on version and configuration. Check the specification sheet for the car you are considering rather than assuming every Qashqai has the larger figure.
Carwow’s comparison calls the HS spacious and treats its generous room as one of the car’s strengths. The available material does not give a single, version-independent HS litre figure, so a precise “winner” would be misleading. A dealer demonstration is the quickest way to test the features that matter to you: pushchairs, a dog crate, work cases or a weekly shop.

Overall cabin room is one of the HS’s selling points. Sit behind your normal driving position and check knee clearance, headroom and the width available for two child seats. Do the same in the Qashqai, because seat design, panoramic-roof equipment and the position of the front seats can alter usable room even within one model range.

Storage and loading details
Count the door bins, centre-console space and cupholders with the equipment you actually carry. Open the tailgate, inspect the loading lip and fold the rear seats. A quoted litre capacity does not tell you whether the shape suits tall items or whether the rear seats leave a flat floor.
Comfort, seats and cabin controls
MG HS equipment and seating
The HS is positioned around equipment and space. On Trophy trim, MG includes heated and ventilated front seats. That can make a meaningful difference on long trips or in extreme temperatures, but it is trim-dependent: confirm that the car you are pricing is a Trophy and that the feature is standard rather than an option on the relevant model year.
The HS’s generous interior and materials are also highlighted in MG’s account of the 2025 Great British Fleet Awards. John Challen, editor of Fleet World, said: “Generous interior space, numerous storage options and low running costs, the MG HS excels in a lot of key areas for fleets. For drivers, comfort and good quality materials around the cabin are two other major plus points that sees this car triumph over some strong competition. The 75-mile EV only range of the PHEV version is another major plus point for the MG HS.” This is a statement quoted in a manufacturer announcement, not an independent head-to-head test; the announcement is available at MG Motor UK.

Nissan Qashqai controls and daily use
The Qashqai is described in the comparison material as having a familiar, straightforward cabin with physical buttons. If you regularly adjust climate temperature, audio volume or demisting while driving, operate those controls on a test drive. Physical switches can be easier to use by feel than a screen-only interface, although personal preference and the exact trim still matter.

Ride comfort cannot be decided from equipment lists
Heated seats, ventilation, storage and button layout describe usability; they do not prove that one suspension tune is more comfortable on every road. Drive both cars over the same route, including a rough urban section, speed humps and faster motorway stretches. Note seat support, wind noise, tyre noise, low-speed ride and how easily you can set the ventilation without taking your eyes off the road.
Powertrains and fuel economy
Official figures
| Vehicle and powertrain | Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| MG HS 1.5-litre turbo petrol | Up to 38.1mpg WLTP combined; 169PS and 275Nm (MG Motor UK) | The figure applies to the petrol specification described on MG’s current UK model page, not automatically to hybrid or plug-in versions |
| Nissan Qashqai mild-hybrid automatic, Acenta Premium | Up to 45.6mpg (Nissan UK) | Trim and transmission specific; do not apply it to every Qashqai |
| Nissan Qashqai e-POWER | 62.8–65.7mpg, depending on version (Nissan UK) | The range reflects different versions, so identify the exact grade before calculating fuel cost |
On the cited official numbers, the Qashqai’s mild-hybrid automatic has a higher maximum WLTP figure than the petrol HS, and e-POWER has the highest quoted range. That does not make the Qashqai universally cheaper: WLTP is a standard test, not a promise of an owner’s result, and the cars use different systems.
What independent testing found
In its 2026 review, Auto Express recorded 33.6mpg from an automatic HS in a mixed town-and-motorway test. The same publication says Qashqai and Sportage examples in its testing returned more than 40mpg. Those are test-car results under Auto Express conditions, not guaranteed consumption for every driver.
Auto Express also reports a claimed 51.3mpg for the full-hybrid HS. Keep that figure separate from the 33.6mpg road-test result and from the 38.1mpg petrol-HS WLTP claim: they refer to different powertrains or evidence types.

Match the powertrain to your journeys
- Mostly urban driving: Compare the Qashqai e-POWER or a hybrid HS with the petrol versions only if the purchase price, charging needs and equipment are also acceptable. Stop-start traffic can produce very different results from a motorway run.
- Frequent motorway work: Check noise, acceleration, seat comfort and actual fuel use on a sustained high-speed route. Official combined figures do not show how either car behaves at your cruising speed.
- Mixed use: Use the same route and tyre pressures for both test drives, record the trip computer after each drive, and treat the readings as indicative rather than definitive.
- Considering an HS PHEV: The 75-mile electric-only range mentioned by Fleet World’s editor is a quoted benefit of the PHEV version. Confirm the exact battery, charging equipment, warranty terms and whether your regular journeys allow you to use that capability.
Running costs beyond fuel
Warranty cover
MG states a seven-year warranty, and its fleet-award release describes the cover as seven years or 80,000 miles. Read the current warranty terms for exclusions, servicing requirements, transfer to a subsequent owner and any mileage limits that apply to particular components.
The cited material does not establish a directly comparable current Nissan warranty term for the exact Qashqai versions discussed here. Confirm the written cover with Nissan or the dealer before using warranty length as a deciding factor.
Reliability and repair risk
A long warranty reduces exposure to some covered failures, but it is not proof that a car will be trouble-free. What Car? advises buyers to consider MG’s historical reliability record alongside the long warranty. Ask what is covered, how claims are handled and where authorised repairs are carried out.
Servicing
No matched service-price schedule for equivalent HS and Qashqai engines is established in the cited material. Request a written schedule showing each interval, the required fluids and parts, labour charges and the cost of any major service. Compare the same ownership period—for example, three years or the first 36,000 miles—rather than one attractive introductory service.

Insurance
Insurance depends on postcode, age, claims history, annual mileage, occupation, security and the exact trim. Obtain quotes using the registration or precise vehicle details for both cars. A small difference in fuel economy can be outweighed by an insurance-group or premium difference.
Depreciation and repairs
The available sources do not provide a matched depreciation or repair-cost comparison. Ask dealers or leasing providers for current valuations, and check the price of common wear items such as tyres, brake discs and pads for the exact wheel size. Do not infer total ownership cost from mpg alone.
Equipment and purchase value
The HS’s case is strongest when you value standard equipment and interior room. Trophy trim’s heated and ventilated seats are a concrete example, but trim walk-up and optional packs can change the value calculation.

The Qashqai’s straightforward cabin and physical controls may be worth more to you than a longer equipment list. Compare equivalent safety, driver-assistance, seat-adjustment, parking-camera, infotainment and lighting equipment line by line. Manufacturer list prices and dealer discounts change, so use current quotations for the same fuel type, transmission and specification rather than relying on an old headline price.
Which one suits your priorities?
Pick the MG HS when these matter most
- You want a spacious-feeling passenger compartment and generous storage.
- You are comparing a trim such as Trophy where heated and ventilated front seats are included.
- A seven-year/80,000-mile MG warranty, as described in the fleet-award release, is valuable to your ownership plan.
- Your preferred HS powertrain and equipment meet your needs even if the petrol model’s official maximum is 38.1mpg.
Pick the Nissan Qashqai when these matter most
- You prefer physical cabin controls and a familiar interface.
- You want the choice of a mild-hybrid automatic or e-POWER and are prepared to pay for the exact version that delivers the economy you expect.
- The Qashqai’s published 455–504-litre boot range fits your loading needs after checking the chosen configuration.
- A same-route test drive confirms better comfort, noise levels or driving refinement for you personally.
How to make a fair buying comparison
- Write down the exact cars. Record model year, trim, engine, fuel type, transmission, wheel size and options for both vehicles.
- Match the powertrains. Compare petrol with petrol, mild-hybrid with mild-hybrid or hybrid with hybrid before using mpg figures to make a judgement.
- Measure your own space needs. Bring the child seats, buggy, luggage or equipment you use and test the boot with the rear seats in their normal position.
- Drive the same route. Include town traffic, uneven surfaces, a dual carriageway and a motorway. Reset the trip computer and keep tyre pressures at the recommended settings.
- Check the controls at night and in poor weather. Test demisting, heater settings, headlights, wipers, reversing aids and the visibility around the rear pillars.
- Collect ownership quotes. Ask for insurance, scheduled servicing, warranty terms and common replacement-item prices using the exact registrations or specifications.
- Calculate fuel for your mileage. Use your annual miles and a current local fuel price, then run a sensitivity check with consumption lower than the official figure. This shows how much a real mpg difference is worth in pounds.
- Review the offer in writing. Confirm the on-the-road price, included options, delivery charges, service plans, warranty and cancellation terms before placing an order.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating all HS or Qashqai versions as identical: boot space, economy and equipment vary by specification.
- Comparing WLTP with a road-test result as if they were the same measurement: the 38.1mpg, 45.6mpg and 62.8–65.7mpg figures are official claims, while 33.6mpg and “over 40mpg” are results from separate Auto Express tests.
- Assuming a long warranty guarantees reliability: read exclusions and consider independent reliability evidence as well as cover length.
- Calling one car the overall cheapest without insurance and servicing quotes: those costs, along with depreciation and repairs, can change the result.
- Using a single comfort feature as proof of ride quality: heated or ventilated seats and physical buttons improve usability, but only a comparable drive reveals how the car feels on your roads.
Verdict
The MG HS is the more convincing choice for buyers who put cabin room, equipment and a long stated warranty ahead of headline fuel economy. The Nissan Qashqai is the stronger alternative for those who prefer its familiar control layout or want the higher official economy claims available from its mild-hybrid and e-POWER versions. To find the genuinely cheaper car for your circumstances, compare the same specification, drive both on the same route and obtain current fuel, insurance and servicing quotes before deciding.
