There is no single winner. In the UK, the MG HS starts at a lower published price, while the Kia Sportage offers a longer stated mileage limit on its warranty and a clearly documented range of boot capacities. The better family SUV depends on the equivalent trim and powertrain you can actually buy, how often you can charge, whether the boot fits your family’s equipment and the total cost in a written dealer quote.
This comparison uses UK manufacturer information checked on 13 October 2026. Prices are published starting prices, not guaranteed transaction prices, and specifications and offers can change.

MG HS vs Kia Sportage at a glance
| Question | What the published UK information shows |
|---|---|
| Which is cheaper? | The MG HS has the lower starting price in each broad powertrain category shown, but the figures are not like-for-like trim or dealer transaction prices. |
| Which powertrains are available? | Both offer petrol, non-plug-in hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions in the UK. |
| Which has the longer stated warranty? | Kia states seven years or 100,000 miles. MG’s HS Hybrid+ launch information states seven years or 80,000 miles; confirm the exact warranty for other HS derivatives. |
| Which has more boot space? | Kia publishes 591 litres for petrol, 587 litres for hybrid and 540 litres for plug-in hybrid. A comparable current official MG HS figure was not established, so there is no supported overall boot-space winner. |
| Which plug-in hybrid travels farther electrically? | MG quotes up to 75 miles WLTP combined for the HS Plug-in Hybrid; Kia quotes up to 44 miles for the Sportage PHEV. These are test-cycle figures, not promises of everyday range. |
| Which is best for a family? | Choose the exact car that fits your luggage, charging routine, equipment expectations, warranty requirements and written total cost. |
UK list prices: cheaper does not automatically mean better value

| Plug-in hybrid | £33,495 | £38,595 | MG is £5,100 lower |
These are manufacturer-published starting prices, not matched specifications. An entry-level petrol HS may have different equipment, wheels, interior trim and driver-assistance hardware from a higher-trim Sportage, and a PHEV carries technology that a petrol model does not. What each powertrain means for family use
MG HS petrol
The standard HS petrol uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine rated by MG at 169 PS and 275 Nm. MG quotes up to 38.1 mpg WLTP combined. That is a laboratory test result; traffic, temperature, speed, passengers, luggage and driving style can all reduce actual consumption.
This version is the uncomplicated choice when you cannot charge at home or work. It avoids the weight, charging routine and purchase premium of a plug-in system, but it also cannot cover routine school or commuting trips on electricity. Compare it with the Sportage petrol on the same basis, including the equipment supplied at the quoted price.
MG HS Hybrid+
The HS Hybrid+ is a non-plug-in hybrid. MG describes EV, hybrid and petrol operating modes, allowing the car to select or combine propulsion without being connected to a charger. It is suited to drivers who want some electric assistance but do not have a reliable place to plug in.
MG lists dual 12.3-inch displays and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto among the equipment, while noting that comfort and navigation features vary by trim. Check the exact grade for powered-seat adjustment, heated seats, parking cameras, adaptive cruise functions and other items your family considers essential.

MG HS Plug-in Hybrid
The HS Plug-in Hybrid has a 24.7 kWh battery and an MG-quoted electric-only range of up to 75 miles WLTP combined. MG also warns that real-world range varies with weather, driving style, load and accessories. The larger battery can make this version useful for regular short journeys if it is charged consistently, but it adds purchase cost and requires a charging plan.
Kia Sportage petrol, hybrid and PHEV
Kia’s UK Sportage range includes petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid configurations. The Sportage PHEV is quoted at up to 44 miles of electric-only range. As with the MG figure, that is a manufacturer test-cycle result and day-to-day distance depends on temperature, speed, traffic, passengers, heating or air conditioning and charging habits.

Exact engines, transmissions and equipment should be checked on the vehicle-specific quote rather than inferred from the model name.
Should you buy the hybrid or plug-in hybrid?
The right answer is determined by your charging pattern, not the maximum electric-range number.
Choose a plug-in hybrid when all of these are true
- You can charge at home, at work or at a dependable public location often enough to use the battery.
- Your regular local journeys fit comfortably within the car’s real-world electric range, leaving a margin for weather and traffic.
- You still need petrol range for longer trips and do not want a fully electric vehicle.
- You have compared the additional purchase price, home-charger costs if applicable, electricity tariff and servicing requirements.
Choose a non-plug-in hybrid when charging is impractical
A self-charging or non-plug-in hybrid can be more convenient when you park on the street, travel unpredictably or cannot install a charger. It will use electric assistance without asking you to remember to connect the car. Do not promise a fuel saving in advance: the result depends on annual mileage, road type, fuel prices, electricity prices and how the hybrid is driven.

Choose petrol when simplicity and price dominate
Petrol remains the straightforward option for low annual mileage, infrequent driving or buyers who do not want to plan around charging. Compare the actual quoted equipment and test-drive comfort, because the cheapest powertrain may not be the best value once essential options are added.

Kia publishes powertrain-specific Sportage capacities of 591 litres for petrol, 587 litres for hybrid and 540 litres for plug-in hybrid. The PHEV figure is lower than the other two, reflecting the space taken by its battery system. Use the figure for the exact vehicle you are considering, not a generic Sportage headline.
A comparable current official MG HS boot figure was not available in the information used for this comparison, so it would be misleading to announce that either model has the larger boot. Measure the real-world fit instead:
- Take your own folded buggy, travel cot, school bags, sports kit and weekly-shop bags to both dealers.
- Load the largest item first, then check whether the remaining width and height work with the parcel shelf in place.
- Install the child seats you use and confirm that front-seat travel position does not compromise rear-seat space.
- Check the loading lip, rear-seat split, under-floor storage, charging cables and whether the PHEV loses useful compartments.
- Repeat the test with the exact powertrain and trim on your quote.
Warranty: Kia’s mileage limit is higher, but read the conditions
Kia states a new-vehicle warranty of seven years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, subject to its terms and exclusions. That gives high-mileage households a larger stated distance allowance than the seven years/80,000 miles specified in MG’s HS Hybrid+ launch announcement.
MG’s model pages describe a seven-year warranty, but the mileage limit and coverage can differ by derivative. Do not assume that every HS version has identical terms. Ask for the written warranty for the exact vehicle, including battery and hybrid-system coverage, servicing requirements, exclusions, corrosion provisions and what happens if the car changes owner.

- Buyer's Guide: The seat guard for car seat between seat & console measures 15.75*2.7*1.53", suitable for gaps of 1.43-1.53" in width, please double-check carefully the distance between your seat and the center console before placing an order
- Storage and Filling in One: Differ from traditional single-function gap fillers, gap filler for car incorporates storage function, offers you the convenience of storing phones and various other items, so that you can access them at any time while driving
- Avoid Items Slipping: With the bumps and vibrations of the car, phones, keys may fall into the seat crevices, which is difficult to pick up, and distracts the driver's attention. Car gap seat filler fills gaps seamlessly to create an effective barrier
- Easy to Install: Car side seat gap filler is easy to install, simply insert it into the gap between the seat and the center console, gap seat filler for car can fit tightly without affecting the normal adjustment of the seat and the use of the seat belt
- Premium Material: Crafted from premium EVA material, our car seat side gap filler boasts a combination of wear-resistant, softness&durability. Maintenance is effortless, simply rinse and wipe to quickly clean the dust and debris in corners and crevices
Warranty length is only one ownership factor. A longer mileage limit does not compensate for equipment you dislike, an unsuitable boot or a purchase price that is materially higher than the value you receive.
Equipment, comfort and safety: compare the quoted trim
MG and Kia both advertise driver-assistance and connected-car features, but availability depends on derivative and trim. Build a side-by-side checklist from the two written specifications rather than relying on a model-range brochure.
Items worth checking before the test drive
- Adaptive cruise control and lane-assistance behaviour on the roads you use.
- Front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera and any 360-degree view.
- Blind-spot monitoring or intervention, rear cross-traffic warning and door-opening alerts.
- Seat shape, adjustment range, heating, ventilation and steering-wheel reach for both front occupants.
- Rear-seat legroom with child seats installed, door opening angle and access to ISOFIX points.
- Infotainment response, navigation provision, wireless phone integration and the number and position of USB ports.
- Tailgate opening height, keyless entry, roof-load rating and towing equipment if you need them.
A manufacturer equipment list is not an independent safety assessment. No direct comparative safety-rating result is established here, so do not treat a longer feature list as proof that one SUV is safer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Finance and total cost: reject the monthly-payment trap
Both manufacturers publish finance offers from time to time, but an advertised monthly figure is conditional and cannot be compared by itself. For each vehicle, record:
Recommended Free Tools
- cash price and deposit;
- manufacturer deposit contribution;
- amount of credit and annual percentage rate;
- agreement length;
- total amount payable;
- optional final payment or balloon;
- annual mileage allowance;
- excess-mileage charge;
- eligibility conditions and registration deadline.
Then obtain current dealer quotes for equivalent powertrains and trims. A lower monthly payment can simply mean a larger deposit, a longer term or a higher final payment. For a PHEV, add the cost of charging equipment and electricity to your household budget, and compare it with petrol use under your expected mileage rather than assuming the WLTP range creates an automatic saving.

Which is cheaper?
On the published UK starting figures checked on 13 October 2026, the MG HS is cheaper than the Kia Sportage in petrol, hybrid and plug-in-hybrid form. That is a list-price comparison only. It does not establish a like-for-like transaction-price winner, because the figures may represent different trim levels, equipment and temporary offers.
The sensible buying test is the total amount payable for the exact cars that meet your needs. If the MG quote remains lower after matching equipment, it has the stronger price case. If the Kia’s additional specification, warranty mileage allowance or dealer offer closes the gap, judge whether those benefits matter to your ownership period.
Which has more boot space?
Kia provides the only powertrain-specific capacities available for this comparison: 591 litres petrol, 587 litres hybrid and 540 litres PHEV. There is no supported MG-versus-Kia boot winner because a comparable current official MG HS capacity was not established. Families should load their own equipment into both cars, especially when comparing PHEVs.
Which warranty is longer?
Kia’s stated seven-year/100,000-mile warranty has the higher published mileage cap. MG’s HS Hybrid+ launch information states seven years/80,000 miles, while MG’s general model pages describe seven years without making every derivative’s mileage limit identical. Confirm the contract for the precise HS version and its service conditions before treating the warranty as a deciding factor.
Evidence behind the HS PHEV’s test claim
MG’s 2026 media release says an Auto Express plug-in-hybrid test involving 59 cars placed the HS PHEV first and attributes to Auto Express the description, “The best plug-in hybrid you can buy right now.” That is a test verdict reported by MG, not a universal result for every family, route or budget. The underlying Auto Express test was not available in the material used here, so the statement should be treated as attributed secondary reporting rather than an independently verified comparison of every current Sportage specification.
Which family should choose which SUV?
The MG HS is the more logical shortlist choice when
- Your priority is the lower published starting point and a like-for-like quote confirms it remains lower.
- You want the possibility of a longer claimed electric range in the PHEV and can charge reliably.
- The HS trim supplies the comfort, parking and connectivity equipment your family needs.
- The written warranty for your exact derivative is acceptable at your expected mileage.
The Kia Sportage is the more logical shortlist choice when
- You value the stated seven-year/100,000-mile warranty and its terms suit your ownership plan.
- The published boot capacity for your chosen powertrain fits your family, especially if you are considering the PHEV.
- The Sportage’s seating position, controls, ride or driver-assistance behaviour feels better on your regular roads.
- A dealer quote, finance offer or equipment level removes the apparent list-price disadvantage.
Neither should be chosen without a charge-and-load check
A PHEV only makes financial and practical sense when it is charged regularly and the reduced boot or additional purchase cost works for you. A petrol or non-plug-in hybrid may be the better answer for households without dependable charging, even if a PHEV has a more impressive specification sheet.
A buying procedure that avoids the common mistakes
- Choose the powertrain first. Decide whether your parking and daily mileage support petrol, non-plug-in hybrid or PHEV operation.
- Match the specification. Select equivalent trim priorities for both cars: parking aids, seats, driver assistance, infotainment and towing equipment.
- Request written prices. Ask for cash and finance figures showing every fee, contribution, APR, term, final payment and mileage condition.
- Check the warranty document. Confirm mileage cap, battery coverage, servicing rules, exclusions and transfer terms for the exact derivative.
- Load-test the cars. Bring the buggy, child seats, luggage and sports equipment you actually use.
- Drive the family route. Include urban traffic, a rough surface, a motorway and a parking manoeuvre if possible.
- Recheck volatile details. Confirm prices, stock, offers and specifications immediately before signing.
Verdict: the better buy depends on the exact quote
The MG HS is the price-led option on the published UK starting figures and its HS Plug-in Hybrid has the higher quoted WLTP electric range. The Kia Sportage counters with a clearly stated seven-year/100,000-mile warranty and published boot figures that vary by powertrain, including 540 litres for its PHEV.
