MG HS real-world fuel economy: what affects the figures?

MG HS economy varies sharply by powertrain. Here are the UK WLTP and independent test figures, what a PHEV’s weighted result means, and how to measure your own consumption.

The MG HS economy figure you can expect depends first on which HS you drive. The UK-market petrol HS, Hybrid+ and Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) use fuel in fundamentally different ways, and their published numbers come from different test methods. A petrol HS has an official 2025 WLTP combined figure of 7.4 L/100 km with the manual gearbox and 7.6 L/100 km with the automatic; What Car? recorded 40.4 mpg in its efficiency testing of the 1.5-litre petrol model. The PHEV’s exceptionally low weighted figure assumes regular charging and electric driving, while MG quotes 5.8 L/100 km WLTP with its battery empty. Those figures are useful only when the powertrain, model year, gearbox and test basis are identified.

MG HS fuel-economy figures at a glance

The following UK-market figures are not interchangeable. WLTP is a standardized laboratory comparison, while an independent road test reflects one vehicle, route, driver and set of conditions.

HS version Published result What it represents
1.5-litre turbo petrol, manual (2025 technical sheet) 7.4 L/100 km WLTP combined Official laboratory comparison figure; not a guarantee of owner consumption.
1.5-litre turbo petrol, automatic (2025 technical sheet) 7.6 L/100 km WLTP combined Official laboratory comparison figure for the automatic variant.
1.5-litre petrol HS (What Car? review of the 2024-present model) 40.4 mpg That publication’s efficiency test, not a fleet-wide owner average.
HS Plug-in Hybrid (2025 technical sheet) 0.5 L/100 km WLTP combined A weighted PHEV result that includes electric operation and assumes the test charging pattern.
Current HS Plug-in Hybrid, MG hybrid-technology page Approximately 2 L/100 km WLTP; 5.8 L/100 km WLTP with an empty battery MG’s explanation of the difference between the charged, weighted result and petrol use after electrical energy is no longer available.
HS Hybrid+ 51.3 mpg WLTP combined MG UK figure for the self-charging hybrid; it is a different version and test basis from the petrol road test.

MG UK also quotes up to 75 miles of WLTP electric-only range for the current PHEV. An Auto Express test reported 68 miles of real-world electric range on 14 May 2026; MG relayed that result, so it should be attributed to that test rather than treated as a universal owner result.

Why the same MG HS can return very different consumption

Powertrain, gearbox and model year

“MG HS” covers more than one drivetrain. A turbocharged petrol engine, the self-charging Hybrid+ and the externally chargeable PHEV have different engines, batteries, control software and operating strategies. Even within the petrol range, MG’s 2025 technical sheet separates the manual and automatic versions at 7.4 and 7.6 L/100 km WLTP combined. Always record the model year, engine, transmission and market when comparing a figure.

PHEV charging and the electric share of a journey

A PHEV’s low fuel number is a weighted result: the test includes journeys completed partly or wholly using stored electricity. MG says that, when the vehicle is recharged, daily journeys can run predominantly on electric power and use much less petrol. That is why a figure around 0.5 L/100 km in the 2025 technical sheet, or approximately 2 L/100 km on MG’s current technology page, must not be read as the petrol economy after the battery is depleted.

With an empty battery, MG gives 5.8 L/100 km WLTP for the current PHEV. Long motorway trips, infrequent charging or an inability to charge at home or work will move your result toward fuel use with little electric assistance. Conversely, short daily trips with regular charging can use very little petrol even though the car still carries an engine and fuel tank.

Driving style and speed

Acceleration, cruising speed and how early you lift off the accelerator all affect energy demand. Higher speeds generally require more power to overcome air resistance; repeated hard acceleration also gives the engine or electric motor more work to do. MG specifically lists driving style and vehicle speed among factors that change actual consumption or electric range. A single fast journey should therefore not be compared directly with a gently driven mixed-route result.

Weather and temperature

MG identifies weather as a real-range factor and outside temperature as an actual-consumption factor. Cold conditions can reduce the useful energy available from a battery and increase the energy required for heating; rain, standing water, wind and low temperatures can also make a route harder for the car. Compare like with like if you are tracking seasonal changes: note the temperature, wind, precipitation and whether the cabin heater or air conditioning was working heavily.

Load, equipment and accessories

Passengers, luggage and roof-mounted equipment add mass or aerodynamic drag. MG lists vehicle load and accessories fitted after registration as influences on PHEV electric range, and its technical sheet also identifies equipment as a factor in consumption. A heavily loaded holiday trip, a roof box or large wheels can therefore produce a different result from an unladen commute, even when the route and speed are similar.

Road surface and journey pattern

MG’s technical sheet names road surface as another variable. Smooth, dry asphalt and rough, wet surfaces do not impose the same rolling resistance. Stop-start urban traffic, a steady dual-carriageway run and a hilly rural route also place different demands on the drivetrain. The available published figures do not quantify a route penalty for every HS version, so treat these as reasons for variation rather than fixed percentages.

How to read WLTP without mistaking it for your mpg

WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure) replaced the older NEDC procedure for official fuel-consumption, CO2 and pollutant measurements on new cars in September 2017, according to the UK government’s Vehicle Market Surveillance Unit. It creates a repeatable baseline for comparing vehicles tested under the same rules. It does not reproduce every owner’s traffic, climate, payload or charging routine.

Use the precise label supplied by the manufacturer: “WLTP combined” means the combined result reported for that test. For a PHEV, ask whether the number is weighted and whether a battery-empty value is also supplied. A weighted 0.5 L/100 km result and a 5.8 L/100 km depleted-battery result answer different questions; neither alone describes every journey.

Government testing of a 2022 model-year MG HS PHEV included laboratory WLTC and on-road RDE work in December 2023 and found that the vehicle met required tailpipe pollutant limits. Those tests establish regulatory emissions compliance. They are not a survey of what HS owners achieve at the fuel pump.

Choosing the right figure for your driving

If you are considering the petrol HS

  • Use 7.4 L/100 km manual or 7.6 L/100 km automatic as the official 2025 WLTP comparison points.
  • Use What Car?’s 40.4 mpg only as an independently tested result for the 2024-present 1.5-litre petrol HS.
  • Expect your own number to move with speed, traffic, weather, payload, equipment and road surface.

If you are considering the Hybrid+

  • MG’s 51.3 mpg WLTP combined figure applies to the Hybrid+ and should not be ranked directly against the petrol car’s 40.4 mpg road test.
  • Check that the model year and trim match the specification you are pricing; regional and equipment differences can change official results.

If you are considering the PHEV

  • Estimate how often you can charge and how many daily miles can be covered electrically.
  • Use the electric-range figures separately from petrol economy: MG quotes up to 75 miles WLTP, while the 68-mile result was from Auto Express’s test reported on 14 May 2026.
  • For trips that exceed the available charge, use MG’s 5.8 L/100 km WLTP empty-battery figure as the relevant published comparison, not the weighted 0.5 L/100 km result.

A home charger is relevant only if you choose the PHEV and have suitable charging access. Confirm the connector, electrical installation requirements and local permission before buying or installing equipment; charging frequency is central to the PHEV’s low fuel use.

How to measure your own MG HS fuel economy

A consistent fuel-log method is more useful than one dashboard snapshot. The dashboard average can reset, cover a short distance or reflect the car’s estimate rather than fuel dispensed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Fill the tank to the same practical level and record the odometer reading. For a PHEV, record the battery state and whether it was fully charged.
  2. Drive normally for a meaningful distance, recording unusual loads, roof equipment, severe weather, towing and the proportion of electric driving.
  3. Refill to the same level. Record litres added and kilometres or miles travelled.
  4. Calculate consumption as litres divided by kilometres, multiplied by 100. For UK mpg, use miles driven divided by UK gallons consumed; one UK gallon is 4.546 litres.
  5. Repeat over several refuelling cycles and separate charged PHEV trips from journeys completed with a depleted battery.

Keep a note of the route mix, average speed, temperature and charging. A repeated pattern over several tanks can reveal your normal range; it cannot turn one driver’s result into a national owner average.

Common comparison mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Mixing test types: Do not place a WLTP number beside an independent road-test number and call the larger one “more realistic” without stating the methods.
  • Using a PHEV weighted result as petrol-only mpg: Check the battery-empty figure and your charging routine.
  • Ignoring the gearbox or year: The petrol manual and automatic already have separate official figures, and specifications change between generations.
  • Generalising one electric-range test: The 68-mile Auto Express result is one dated test; MG’s “up to 75 miles” is a WLTP ceiling, not a promise in every climate.
  • Comparing different routes: Record road type, traffic, weather and payload before deciding that a change is caused by the car.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you

The published material provides a petrol efficiency test, official figures for the petrol, Hybrid+ and PHEV versions, and an independent PHEV electric-range test relayed by MG. It does not establish a single population-level statistic for typical MG HS owner fuel economy across all powertrains. The most defensible estimate for your car comes from matching the exact variant and test basis, then logging several of your own comparable journeys.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 40.4 mpg realistic for every MG HS petrol owner?

No. It is What Car?’s result from an efficiency test of the 2024-present 1.5-litre petrol HS. Traffic, speed, weather, load, equipment, road surface, gearbox and driving style can produce a different result.

Why does the HS PHEV show such a low litres-per-100-kilometre figure?

The WLTP PHEV result is weighted to include electric driving. It assumes a charging pattern during the test; MG quotes 5.8 L/100 km WLTP with the current PHEV’s battery empty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which MG HS figure should I use for a long trip?

Identify your exact powertrain first. For a PHEV, consider the battery-empty fuel figure for the petrol portion and the electric range for the charged portion. Do not use the weighted figure as a petrol-only forecast.
