There is no single MG HS dimensions figure that applies to every car. The 2025 MG Motor Europe data list a 1.5-litre petrol HS at 4,655 mm long, 1,890 mm wide and 1,664 mm high, with a 2,765 mm wheelbase. The same sheet lists the HS PHEV at 4,670 mm long and 1,663 mm high. It gives 507 litres of boot space with the petrol rear seats up and 441 litres for the PHEV. A UK 2025 HS SE manual listing gives different exterior and luggage figures, so you must check the exact market, model year, trim and powertrain before relying on a specification.
For a buying decision, published numbers are only the starting point. Test the actual rear seat behind the correctly adjusted driver, measure your pram or luggage against the boot opening and floor, and compare the car’s width and length with your garage or regular parking space.

Which MG HS are these dimensions for?
“MG HS” describes more than one specification. The available figures come from three sources covering different markets or data conventions: MG Motor Europe’s January 2025 technical sheet for the new petrol HS and PHEV, a Luscombe MG Leeds listing for a 2025 HS SE manual, and an MG UK announcement about the launch of the new HS. Their numbers do not match exactly.

That does not automatically mean one source is wrong. A market-specific body specification, trim, powertrain or measuring boundary can change the published result. The dealer listing explicitly measures its seats-up boot capacity to the lower edge of the window and its seats-down capacity to the ceiling, while the technical sheet does not state the same boundaries. Treat each row below as a separate specification, not as interchangeable measurements.

What the numbers mean for parking
At 1,890 mm wide in the MG Europe sheet, the HS is nearly 1.9 metres across before you account for mirrors, door clearance or the space needed to walk around it. The cited overall-width figures do not say whether mirrors are included. Measure the usable width of your garage, then allow room for mirrors to fold and for doors to open. Do the same with the car’s length: a 4,655–4,670 mm body can leave little room in a short garage once a wall, shelving or a closed door is considered.
If your paperwork or dealer quote shows 1,876 mm width, 4,574 mm length or a 2,722 mm wheelbase, you are looking at the separate Luscombe listing rather than the MG Europe row. Do not average the figures or assume the larger wheelbase applies to every HS.
How big is the MG HS boot?
Using MG Motor Europe’s January 2025 figures, the petrol HS has 507 litres with all seats in use and 1,484 litres when the rear seats are folded. The PHEV is listed at 441 litres seats-up and 1,291 litres seats-folded. On those published figures, the PHEV gives up 66 litres of normal luggage capacity and 193 litres with the rear bench folded compared with the petrol HS.
The 2025 Luscombe MG Leeds HS SE manual listing reports 463 litres seats-up and 1,454 litres seats-down. Because its stated measurement boundaries differ, those values should not be used to calculate a precise gain or loss against the MG Europe data. MG UK’s 2024 launch announcement says the new HS boot “has increased by 44 litres to a maximum of 507 litres”; that statement aligns with the 507-litre petrol figure but does not define the measurement method for every market or powertrain.

Seats-up capacity is the family-car test
The seats-up number matters when five people travel and luggage must remain behind the second row. A litre total cannot tell you whether a tall pushchair, a hard-sided suitcase or a weekly shop will pass through the opening. Check:
- the narrowest point of the tailgate opening, not only the floor width;
- the height from the floor to the parcel shelf or window line;
- the distance from the lip to the seatbacks;
- whether the rear seatbacks leave a step when folded;
- the position of the boot floor, spare-wheel well and charging equipment, if fitted.
Take the pram, crate or suitcase you actually use to a showroom. Put it through the opening with the parcel shelf in place, then try the same item with the shelf removed. If you need the rear seats for passengers, test the item without folding a seat; a large quoted volume is not useful if the load only fits diagonally or blocks the driver’s view.

“1,484 litres” and “1,291 litres” describe a volume, not a guaranteed rectangular loading area. The technical sheet does not state whether its folded-seat value is measured to a window line, roof, or another boundary. The Luscombe listing does state “to the ceiling,” which is a different convention. Ask the seller which boundary applies to the exact vehicle you are considering and whether the parcel shelf, floor panel and charging hardware are included.
Fold the seats yourself. Check if the rear backrests split in the way you need, whether the resulting floor is level, and whether headrests must be removed. Measure the length from the tailgate to the front seatbacks with the driver’s seat set for its normal driver. That physical length is more useful for bicycles, flat-pack furniture or a dog crate than a headline litre figure.
Does the PHEV have less boot space?
Yes, in the MG Motor Europe January 2025 technical sheet, the HS PHEV is listed with less luggage capacity than the 1.5L Turbo manual: 441 versus 507 litres with the seats up, and 1,291 versus 1,484 litres with the seats folded. The PHEV is also listed at 4,670 mm long, 1,663 mm high, 1,890 mm wide and a 2,765 mm wheelbase; the petrol row is 4,655 mm long, 1,664 mm high, 1,890 mm wide and uses the same wheelbase.

Those are the published values for the named versions. The evidence does not establish that every current UK Hybrid+ or another regional electrified version shares them. If a dealer is offering a Hybrid+ model, request its own specification sheet and inspect its actual boot before ordering. Do not assume that a PHEV, Hybrid+ and petrol HS have interchangeable floor heights or seat-folding dimensions.

The MG Motor Europe technical sheet reviewed here does not publish rear-seat legroom or headroom. The Luscombe MG Leeds 2025 HS SE manual listing gives 980 mm of rear legroom and 964 mm of rear headroom. Those are dealer-published figures for that entry, not a guarantee that every trim, market or powertrain provides identical space.
Use a driver-behind-passenger test
Set the driver’s seat for the person who normally drives, including the seat height and backrest angle they actually use. Sit directly behind that position and check:
- knee clearance to the front seatback;
- whether your feet can slide under the front seat;
- headroom with your normal posture, including when entering over the door sill;
- support under your thighs from the rear-seat cushion;
- shoulder room when two adults sit beside you;
- door aperture and the effort required to climb in and out.
Repeat the test behind the front passenger seat if that seat is usually set farther back. A published legroom number cannot account for a reclined seatback, a tall driver’s preferred seating position or the shape of the cushion.
Children and child seats
Bring the actual child seat or booster you intend to use. Install it in every required rear position, then set the front seat for its normal occupant. Check that the child seat does not force the front seat too far forward, that the door closes without touching it, and that you can reach the buckle and release lever. If you use two seats, install both at once: a pair of wide seats can remove the practical centre-seat space even when the brochure describes the bench as a three-person seat.

Check the tailgate and rear-door opening with the child seat installed, and practise lifting the child in without striking the roof or door frame. These are fit checks, not claims that the dealer’s 980 mm or 964 mm figures predict every family’s comfort.
What to check during a showroom inspection
- Confirm the identity of the car. Record the model year, country, trim, transmission and powertrain from the vehicle identification label or order sheet. Ask whether it is the petrol HS, PHEV or Hybrid+ and which specification sheet supplies the dimensions.
- Measure the outside. Compare the stated length and width with your garage, parking bay and narrowest access point. Measure between walls, not between painted lines, and leave clearance for mirrors and doors.
- Load your real luggage. Bring a pram, suitcase, pet crate or shopping box. Test it seats-up, then remove the parcel shelf and fold the seats. Note the opening height, floor step and tie-down locations.
- Set the driver first. Have the normal driver choose a comfortable position before anyone evaluates the rear bench. Sit behind that position and check knees, feet, head and thigh support.
- Test every passenger combination. Try two adults, three rear occupants, and the child-seat arrangement you use. Check access through both rear doors and whether a central passenger has usable shoulder and foot space.
- Check the folded floor. Ask which headrests or floor panels must be removed, whether the backrests fold from the cabin or boot, and whether the resulting surface is level enough for your loads.
- Write down the measurement convention. If the seller quotes a boot volume, ask whether it is measured to the window line, parcel shelf or ceiling. Keep that note with the vehicle specification so you do not compare unlike figures later.
- Verify the owner’s information. MG UK’s owner-manual index includes the HS and older HS generations. Use the manual for the exact generation to confirm seat-folding operation, load limits and any vehicle-specific procedure before carrying a large or heavy item.
How to compare an MG HS with another vehicle
Use the same checklist for both cars. Compare exterior length and width against the same parking space; a wheelbase alone does not tell you how easy a vehicle is to manoeuvre. For luggage, record seats-up and seats-folded capacities, the measurement boundary, the narrowest opening and the usable floor length. For passengers, compare knee and foot clearance behind the same driver’s seating position, then check headroom and cushion support.
Do not rank vehicles by litres alone. A boot with a squarer opening can carry your pram more easily than a nominally larger boot with a high lip. Conversely, a long, flat floor may matter more than total volume when you carry bicycles or boxes. The practical winner is the vehicle that fits your people and equipment without forcing unsafe seat positions or leaving the tailgate unable to close.
Common mistakes when reading MG HS specifications
Assuming every “2025 HS” is the same
The MG Europe technical sheet and the Luscombe UK listing both use 2025 descriptions but report different dimensions and capacities. Treat the year as a starting point, then identify market, trim and powertrain.

Mixing boot figures from different methods
A seats-up figure measured to the lower window edge is not directly comparable with one measured to a parcel shelf or another boundary. Keep the source and method beside every number.

Using wheelbase as a promise of rear comfort
The wheelbase indicates the distance between the axles, not the room available at a particular seat setting. Dashboard shape, front-seat travel, cushion design and roofline all affect the space you feel.
Forgetting electrified versions
The listed PHEV has less boot capacity than the listed petrol HS. A Hybrid+ or another regional model may have its own packaging and specification, so request figures for that exact vehicle.
Measuring the garage too late
Overall width may exclude mirrors, and a car can fit between the walls yet leave no space to open its doors. Measure the approach, the final bay and the walking clearance before signing an order.
Optional boot protection
If you regularly carry muddy equipment, a dog or a pushchair, a model-specific boot liner or cargo mat can protect the luggage floor. Treat it as an optional accessory and confirm compatibility with the exact MG HS generation, model year and powertrain; no individual product fitment is established here. Check that a liner does not cover tie-downs, obstruct the seat-folding mechanism or reduce the tailgate opening you need.
Bottom line: inspect the exact car, not just the headline number
The most useful published baseline is MG Motor Europe’s January 2025 specification: 4,655 mm long and 507 litres seats-up for the 1.5L Turbo manual, versus 4,670 mm and 441 litres for the listed PHEV.
