The MG Hector is the stronger shortlist choice if you want a petrol SUV with a manual or CVT, a connected technology-heavy cabin, or the Hector Plus’s six- or seven-seat layouts. The Tata Harrier is the more relevant choice if you specifically want the 2.0-litre diesel with a torque-converter automatic, front-wheel drive and the five-star Global NCAP result reported by Tata in October 2023.
Those recommendations apply only after matching equivalent variants. A commonly quoted comparison pairs a ₹20.15 lakh Hector Plus petrol CVT with a ₹26.11 lakh Harrier diesel automatic; they differ in fuel, seating, trim and price, so that table cannot identify a whole-range value winner. Use the exact trim, city and transmission you intend to buy before deciding.

Why the Hector-versus-Harrier headline can mislead
These SUVs overlap in size and price but are not represented by identical mechanical configurations. JSW MG Motor India’s current Hector page describes a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with a six-speed manual or CVT. The selected Harrier in Autocar India’s comparison uses a 1,956 cc turbo-diesel, a torque-converter automatic and front-wheel drive. Diesel torque, petrol refinement, automatic calibration, running costs and annual mileage can matter more to your experience than the displacement numbers.
Seating creates a second mismatch. MG sells the Hector as a five-seater and the Hector Plus as a seven-seater; its December 2025 launch material also discusses six- and seven-seat interiors. The Harrier configuration discussed in the published comparison is a five-seat SUV. A three-row Hector Plus should therefore be judged for family carrying capacity, not as a direct substitute for a five-seat Harrier.

Prices are also snapshots rather than permanent specifications. MG’s live page lists a broad ex-showroom range, while the Autocar figures identify two particular trims. Registration, insurance, accessories, local taxes and dealer offers can change the on-road gap substantially.

Powertrain: choose the way you drive, not the bigger-sounding number
MG Hector petrol manual or CVT
MG quotes 143 PS and 250 Nm from the Hector’s 1.5-litre turbo-petrol in its December 2025 launch release. The current model page lists both a six-speed manual and a CVT. The manual gives the driver direct control and avoids the operating characteristics of a belt-driven automatic. The CVT is the easier choice for congested commuting because it removes clutch work, but you should assess its response yourself during overtakes and on inclines rather than assuming every CVT feels the same.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMG’s page gives an ARAI-certified range of 12.40 to 13.94 kmpl, with the result depending on whether you choose manual or CVT. ARAI figures are a standardised certification, not a promise of your city consumption. Traffic density, air-conditioning use, passengers, tyre pressure and driving style will move the real number.

Tata Harrier diesel automatic
The selected Harrier Fearless Ultra Stealth uses Tata’s 1,956 cc turbocharged diesel, rated at 170 hp, with a torque-converter automatic and front-wheel drive. A diesel automatic can suit high annual kilometre use and frequent highway travel, where strong low-speed torque and relaxed cruising are valuable. It is a less obvious fit for a buyer who drives short, infrequent urban trips and is primarily seeking petrol smoothness; ask the dealer about the exact service schedule and emissions-system requirements for your usage.
The published comparison does not establish a complete, current Harrier fuel-economy table. Do not substitute a figure from another model year or transmission. Request the official number for the exact Fearless, automatic or manual variant you are considering.
What this means in daily use
- Choose the Hector petrol when your priority is a petrol powertrain, a manual option, or a CVT for urban convenience.
- Choose the Harrier diesel automatic when your driving pattern supports a diesel and you specifically want the torque-converter configuration represented above.
- Compare annual fuel cost using your own kilometres and local petrol or diesel prices; nominal engine size alone cannot decide it.
- Drive both vehicles in the same traffic, on a rough road and on an open highway. Note throttle response, brake feel, steering weight, visibility and noise at the speeds you actually use.
Seating and family practicality
When the Hector Plus makes the difference
MG’s current page separates the five-seat Hector from the seven-seat Hector Plus. The extra row is the decisive feature for families who regularly carry six or seven people, but it changes how you evaluate luggage space, access to the rear seats and the price comparison. A seven-seat Hector Plus at ₹20.15 lakh in Autocar’s table cannot be treated as a like-for-like alternative to a five-seat Harrier at ₹26.11 lakh.
Inspect the exact second-row arrangement. MG’s launch material refers to six- and seven-seat interiors, so verify whether the trim has captain’s chairs or a bench, how the third row folds, and whether adults can enter without moving the front seats excessively. Bring the child seats, booster seats or mobility equipment your family uses.

When a five-seat layout is enough
If the vehicle normally carries four or five people, a five-seat configuration can provide a simpler luggage area and fewer compromises in the rear. Check boot height, loading lip, under-floor storage and the split-fold mechanism with your own bags. Do not select a three-row body solely because its list price appears close to a five-seat rival.
Cabin technology and equipment
Hector features to verify by trim
MG’s December 15, 2025 release describes the updated Hector with a 14-inch HD portrait infotainment display, i-SWIPE gesture controls, a 360-degree HD camera with wheel view, connected-car functions and a panoramic sunroof. These are launch-described features, not proof that every Hector or Hector Plus trim includes every item. Ask for a written variant feature sheet and operate the system yourself.
Check whether the screen remains readable with direct sunlight, whether wireless phone connectivity works with your handset, how quickly the camera appears in reverse, and whether the gesture controls are useful or distracting. Confirm that the 360-degree view is available in the exact trim and that the wheel-view perspective is not limited to a particular camera mode.
Harrier equipment and ADAS
Tata’s 2025 Harrier brochure states that specifications and features vary by model and directs buyers to an authorised dealer for current detail. Use it as a checklist rather than assuming that a feature listed for the Harrier family is standard on the trim you want.

Tata’s October 2023 launch release described ADAS with 12 functions and seven airbags, with six airbags standard across personas at that launch. Verify the current airbag count, radar and camera hardware, adaptive-cruise availability, blind-spot monitoring, lane functions and the conditions in which each feature operates. Tata’s brochure warns that ADAS is an assist system and not a substitute for human eye and driver vigilance. Treat alerts as support, not autonomous driving.
Safety: what is established and what is not
Tata Motors’ October 17, 2023 release said the then-new Harrier achieved a five-star Global NCAP rating, reporting 33.05 out of 34 for adult occupant protection and 45.00 out of 49 for child occupant protection. Those numbers belong to Tata’s dated launch statement and its assessed specification. Confirm the original assessment record, test date and equipment match before extending the result to a different model year or trim.
No comparable independent MG crash-test result is established in the material used for this comparison. That absence does not prove the Hector is less safe; it means a direct crash-test ranking cannot responsibly be made here. Separate structural crash protection from active assistance, airbag count, child-seat fit and driver visibility when you evaluate either SUV.
During your inspection, identify the ISOFIX points, top-tether locations, rear-seat belt geometry, head-restraint adjustment and the location of the emergency spare or tyre-repair kit. Ask the dealer to demonstrate ADAS settings and how the system behaves when lane markings are poor, rain is heavy or a motorcycle cuts across the sensor path.

Price, warranty and ownership cost
How to read the MG figures
MG’s current Hector page lists ₹12,14,000 to ₹20,14,800 ex-showroom and notes that prices may vary across southern regions. Those figures should be treated as the live page’s range, not a guaranteed quote for your city. The same page lists the 12.40–13.94 kmpl ARAI range.
MG’s December 2025 launch release mentioned an introductory starting price of ₹11.99 lakh. That was a launch offer and is lower than the current page’s range; do not present it as today’s price. The release also described 100% on-road funding for up to 84 months. Finance availability, interest rate, processing fees and approval criteria are lender- and time-dependent, so request the present written offer.
MG SHIELD package
The launch release describes MG SHIELD as a three-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty, three years of roadside assistance and three labour-free periodic services. Confirm the exact terms on your booking form: exclusions, transferability, service intervals, consumables, roadside-assistance limits and whether a particular trim or campaign changes the package.

Harrier ownership quote
The ₹26.11 lakh Harrier figure in Autocar’s selected comparison is a page-listed ex-showroom price for the Fearless Ultra Stealth 2.0 Diesel AT, not a local on-road quote. Tata’s 2025 brochure directs customers to an authorised dealer for current model detail. Ask for a line-by-line quotation covering ex-showroom price, registration, insurance, fastag, accessories, extended warranty, service plans and every discount. Obtain the same line items for the Hector Plus or Hector trim you are comparing.
Calculate the financed amount and total repayment, not just the monthly instalment. Add expected fuel, insurance renewal, tyres, scheduled maintenance and the opportunity cost of optional accessories. A lower sticker price can disappear if the chosen trim lacks equipment you would otherwise add.
Which SUV fits which buyer?
Choose the Hector when these priorities dominate
- You want petrol rather than diesel.
- You need to choose between a manual and a CVT.
- You value a large portrait display, connected functions, gesture controls or the 360-degree wheel-view camera, subject to trim confirmation.
- You regularly need six or seven seats and are comparing the Hector Plus with other three-row options.
- The MG price range and written warranty package fit your city-specific budget.
Choose the Harrier when these priorities dominate
- You specifically want the 2.0-litre diesel and torque-converter automatic combination.
- Your annual driving and highway use make a diesel’s operating profile appropriate.
- You prefer the selected Harrier’s five-seat format and front-wheel-drive layout.
- The five-star Global NCAP result reported by Tata in 2023 is an important part of your decision, after confirming the assessed specification and current equipment.
- The exact Harrier trim’s price, ADAS hardware and ownership terms remain acceptable after a written quote.
How to compare the exact variants before booking
- Write down the non-negotiables. Record fuel type, transmission, seat count, annual kilometres, typical road type, maximum on-road budget and must-have safety or convenience features.
- Build an equivalent shortlist. Compare five-seat Hector with five-seat Harrier, or Hector Plus with another three-row solution. Keep manual, CVT and torque-converter automatic versions in separate rows.
- Request current documents. Obtain the latest variant brochure, price list, insurance quote, warranty terms and service schedule from each dealer. Mark every item as standard, optional, unavailable or not confirmed.
- Get city-specific on-road prices. Ask both dealers to itemise registration, insurance, accessories, offers, finance charges and taxes. MG specifically notes regional ex-showroom variation.
- Test-drive the exact powertrain. Do not evaluate a petrol CVT and order a different manual, or drive a diesel automatic and buy another engine, without repeating the drive.
- Check fit and usability. Install child seats, sit in every row, load your normal luggage, test the turning circle at your parking space and check camera visibility in daylight and darkness.
- Read the final paperwork. Confirm manufacturing month, VIN, promised features, warranty duration, roadside assistance, service inclusions and delivery conditions before paying a non-refundable amount.
Test-drive checklist
- City crawl: assess clutch weight on the manual, low-speed smoothness of the CVT or automatic, brake modulation and visibility at junctions.
- Open-road acceleration: check response from 40–80 km/h, kick-down behaviour, engine noise and steering stability. Do not treat a salesperson’s demonstration as a performance test.
- Rough surface: listen for rattles, observe body control and check whether the 19-inch Harrier wheel-and-tyre package suits the roads near your home.
- Parking: verify camera image quality, sensor warnings, steering effort and whether the 360-degree view is available in the selected Hector trim.
- Rear-seat use: check knee room, headroom, ingress, air vents, USB ports, seat-belt access and the folding mechanism with your passengers present.
- Driver assistance: ask the Harrier dealer to demonstrate each ADAS function safely and explain its limits; leave the settings at a level you can monitor comfortably.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Comparing a model name instead of a variant: “Hector” and “Harrier” each cover multiple trims, while Hector and Hector Plus do not offer the same seating.
- Mixing price types: keep current ex-showroom, historical introductory, dealer-offer and on-road amounts in separate columns.
- Using a brochure feature as a guarantee: confirm whether the screen, sunroof, camera, ADAS or audio system is standard on your exact trim and model year.
- Calling the Harrier safer solely because of an absent MG test: the published five-star result is a Tata statement from 2023; the available material does not provide a matching independent Hector result.
- Choosing diesel for a low-mileage city routine without checking requirements: discuss the service schedule and emissions-system use with the dealer for your driving pattern.
- Assuming a launch offer still applies: the Hector’s ₹11.99 lakh introductory figure is superseded for decision-making by the current page range and a live quotation.
- Ordering an accessory from a generic listing: verify compatibility, warranty implications and installation with the dealer rather than assuming a product fits either SUV.
A decision you can defend
Start with the powertrain and seat count, because those choices determine whether the comparison is even like-for-like. Then price equivalent trims using current city quotations, verify safety and assistance equipment, and drive the exact transmission you will own. On that basis, the Hector earns priority for petrol flexibility, connected-cabin features and three-row availability; the Harrier earns priority for the diesel automatic configuration and Tata’s reported 2023 Global NCAP result. The right purchase is the one whose specific variant, running pattern, equipment and on-road cost match your needs—not the one that wins a generic model-name comparison.
